Sam's vet visit was pretty uneventful. He doesn't have an infection, no ketones, my DH took him and he let them do a fructosamine, which I told him not to, but they did a full blood work up which we should know about before tomorrow. They send them out to Ft. Collins. So, no antibiotics for Sammy. His kidney values were up though and he was slightly dehydrated and is under weight. All things I knew already. They want to keep his dose at 1 unit until he starts showing improvement in his numbers which could be high because of his kidneys. So, I need to know how you feed a kidney/diabetic kitty. One is low protein, the other high protein diet. confused_cat He said Sam fought them tooth and nail trying to get some blood from him. He is usually a very good kitty for the vet, I guess he's had enough. Poor guy. :YMSIGH:

+5 187 That is more like it. I'll try to get DH to do another test at +8 or so.

PMPS 291 1U Mucho better number. Still waiting on blood test results.

Side note. This vet charged me $22 dollars MORE to euth Ghostie than the vet charged to euth my horse Ronan. Can you believe that?! And the large animal vet came to my house!

Actually with kidney cats it is low phosphorus...Friskies Special Diet are good for both conditions. With kidney problems you also don't want to feed fish flavors, because of the phorsphorus content, and if his kidney values get really bad you might want ask your vet to give you a phosphorus binder that you can add to his food.

Much like the high fiber diet for diabetic cats, low protein is old school for kidney cats. You might try posting over on Health asking for experienced eyes dealing with both kidney problems and diabetes. Of course those elevated kidney values could also be because he is dehydrated from the diabetes.

Did your vet mention anything about possibly giving him sub-q fluids at home? I know that seems to help a lot of kitties both diabetic and in early stages of kidney disease.

No mention of giving sub-q fluids. I had a cat with CRF years ago and we used to take him in for fluids, it would have been nice to do it at home. I'll check and see. That would help Sam. I'll ask over in health. Thanks for the tips Momma. :-D

No problem that is what we are hear for. :-D

Once you get his bloodwork back you might also post that over on Health as well and see if anyone sees anything that is off.

I haven't had to give fluids at home for a lot of years but it is fairly easy once you get use to the size of the needle..lol. It looks like a harpoon compared to our little insulin needles.

I'm just glad to see Samwise in the pinks this morning instead of those bright reds, its better, not great yet but it is a start.

Note: if you do give fluids, do them on the other side from the insulin, and maybe an hour apart.

Lantus and Levemir aren't meant to be diluted and may not work properly if fluids dilute them.

Much better numbers for Samwise YAY!!! Maybe you just had to threaten him with a trip to the vet's :-D
