Good morning
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=110775#p1168724

Ole's over night BG's after dose increase to 2.5U

+2 407
+5 403
+7.5 409

Ole went pee outside of the litter box and also got sick last night. He is also getting all growly and crabby. I know that he doesn't feel well, but nobody is having much fun anymore. He hasn't played fetch for several nights now, with his only focus being on food. Poor kitty, what a sad life.

Hanging in there!
Rebekah

I hope the dosecrease brings some lower numbers and helps Ole to feel better soon.

hi rebekah!

are you checking ketones regularly with Ole? It's important to do that when cats aren't yet regulated so that they are caught early on if they appear. also mixing water with his food so he's getting as much water in him as possible.

You can buy Ketostix at any drugstore to check him. If you need help with the how-to's, just add a question to your subject line so people see it from the main page and we'll get you suggestions.

Hello all,

I bought ketone test strips today and will test this evening, when I can. Luckily Ole has never been litter box shy, hopefully making it easier on the both of us. He has been tested multiple times at the vet, always negative. He is peeing quite a bit, which is normal for him and pooed this afternoon, also normal. His vomit from last night was grass, which he likes to munch on.

Since diagnosis in April, I have diluted Ole's food. My reasoning was not for ketones, (I don't even know what they are), I did it to slow down his crazy eating speed and to make him feel more full. I knew that keeping him well hydrated was important too.

Numbers are still high, but I take small comfort in my higher numbered Alpha Trak. We will switch monitors when our supplies are exhausted or when Ole's numbers are lower, which ever comes first (hopefully the latter). Any suggestions on brands? I prefer shopping at Target or Wallgreens for my prescriptions, but I'm open to any advice.

Thanks again for your wisdom and experience. Keep the advice coming, it is much appreciated.

Rebekah

Hi!

Neg for Ketones, testing was very easy. I'll test again tomorrow to insure my results.

Good night!

Hi Rebekah,
Hope the dosecrease helps bring Ole's numbers down and he starts to feel better.
Re: meters, I know some members use the Target Up and Up Meter. I am not sure of the cost of the meter or strips. You can order a meter and strips from American Diabetes Wholesale. They are reasonable and ship quickly. There was a link at the top of the page, but I believe it is broken.
Hope you and Ole have a wonderful night :-D

most people buy the Relion meters. They are inexpensive, the strips are inexpensive, they are relatively accurate and most of them use a tiny amount of blood. I had a Confirm and I've heard others mention newer models. The strips are often ordered from American Diabetes Wholesale along with the syringes that have 0.5u markings. I used Terumo Thinpro syringes that I bought through ADW also. There's a link at the top of the forum that gives a % back to this site to help cover the costs of running the website. There are generic strips you can get that work on the Relion meters. Strips are the biggest expense of this adventure - you might use 10 a day, or if Ole goes low it might be 20, so the cost of strips matters to most people.

Don't buy a Freestyle meter for Ole - they're great meters but for some reason with cats they don't measure as accurately. We started with a Freestyle LIte and switched to a Relion in Jan. 2012 - the entire "look" of punkin's spreadsheet changed. Freestyles measure most BGs in yellow and blue numbers, and suddenly we had a rainbow spreadsheet. The meters with "True" in the name are apparently not as accurate. On the New to the Group sticky there are some links to comparisons of meters.

Ketones form when the body begins breaking down. The "recipe" is not enough insulin + not enough food + infection. they can develop at lower BG numbers, but when we have sustained high numbers in a cat we know there isn't enough insulin, so we encourage testing for ketones daily. The breath can smell like acetone (nail polish remover) and the cat can get very sick very quickly.

Some people put golf balls in a cat's bowl to slow down the eating. Punkin was a hoover too. I've got 2 kittens that take mere seconds to finish an entire can of fancy feast apiece. i don't know how to make them slow down. it's ridiculous!
