12/26 Disco didn't start Lantus today-I'm overthinking this?!

Disco isn't the scaredy-cat, it's me! I am sure I am overthinking this! My light box is making me dizzy-it's not a clear white background but zillions of dots like a a pixelated photo (photo attached) but that and the lighted magnifying glass is better than my post-cataract near vision!

I have re-read and re-watched the 'Dosing with calipers updated w/videos' and measured 10 of the UltiCare U-100 3/10cc with 1/2u markings and looked at the Steve Rapaport Syringe Fine Graduations photos and came up with 1u = 1.52mm on all ten of them (just like in the 'Dosing with calipers' info page) and now question the fact that there was no variation, sigh. The instructions in the 'Info' post said "the bottom of the upper caliper arm should line up perfectly with the plastic rings around the syringes where the zero line would be and the 2 photos are very helpful. Although none of the black rubber on the syringes I have go past the zero black line unless I push really hard and then it's just a bump of black not the entire rubber thingy. So, I am going to start with the SLGS protocol and his current Vetsulin dose is 1.6 (.4 on conversion with the U-100's) and I am going to start a bit low at 1.25U, so that is 1.9mm on my Harbor Freight 4" caliper, right?

Does testing the urine for ketones be any time during each cycle, or does it need to be as close to blood testing as possible? Also, Disco gets full Darwins Raw/Fancy Feast meals post test and either 1/2 can of Fancy Feast Classics or 1 portion of Sheba Purrfect Portions mid-cycle AM and PM and at bedtime he gets dried bonita flakes and a few pieces of Stella and Chewy's freeze-dried. In reading and googling for info on FDMB, sounds like I can front load him and feed him more in the AM and early PM as he still needs to put on weight.

I consider myself fortunate to be retired and able to home test Disco as frequently as needed most days (STILL in the process of moving into my new home) AND as he is nekkid, I haven't done any 'furshots', HaHaMeow! On the SLGS Sticky, it says after 1 week at a given dose, perform a 12 hr curve, and on the TR Sticky, says test often in the first 3 days. For my cat, and my info gathering, I can do multiple tests (like +1, +3, +6, +8) in both the AM and PM for the next 3 days if that's what I need to do.

Promise, starting Lantus in the AM!

I have never used calipers so I can't help you with that. I will tag @Marje and Gracie and she may be able to help you.

Looking at the SS it looks as if you haven't done any tests between the cycles since the 12/10.
I would encourage you to get at least one test in per cycle around the +4 to +6 timeframe and a before bed test each night.

With testing for ketones, you can test at any time of the day or night.

With feeding it is good to give several smaller meals throughout the day and night.
Feeding before the shot and then one or two smaller meals throughout the cycle......choose times that suit you and Disco.
Once you swap to Lantus, because it is a longerlasting and more gentle insulin than Vetsulin, you test, feed and shoot in around 10 or 15 mins. There is no need to wait for the food to be digested as you do with Vetsulin.

Once you swap over to Lantus I would routinely try and get some tests in during each cycle, as I mentioned above, as well a the curve after 7 days. Being at home all the time makes it much easier to do this.

Good luck with the swap over and don't be nervous...you will be fine!

Thx for the encouragement, feeding advice and tagging Marje & Gracie. Yikes, yes it has been that long since I did any mid-cycle tests! I ordered the Lantus and my vet said ok to skip til I started the Lantus and wow--2 weeks has passed! I will be conscientious from here on out!

When you say the vet said it would be OK to skip until you start Lantus, do you mean testing or giving the insulin?

You can use a white piece of paper on the light box to give you a solid background. I never used a light box, but my kitchen sink is white and i have a good overhead light, so that worked for me. I didn't use calipers originally, but did after a while. It's nice to do, but not required, especially at first. Disco's body still has to learn how to work Lantus. Yes on the 1.9 mm.

Looking forward to seeing those first Lantus numbers tomorrow.;)

I don't have a light box. I do use a white paper towel folded which really helps me. My kitchen light use to be really poor so I always drew insulin in dining room. That light had 4 light bulbs. Now the new lights in kitchen are super bright. And new dining room fan/ light has 4 Reveal Daylight 60 watt bulbs which are super bright. Maybe you can just change bulbs. I always liked the Reveal Daylight as they are white light, not the soft white light.
