Hello, I have been overwhelmed in life and absent from the forum, I’m here today for help... Herman started trending up over last week or so, acting completely normal, acting excellent, really. Last night he was unsettled, I chalked it up to my hosting Christmas Eve with extra dogs in house lots of people etc. This morning his number really spiked and I found him laying in the litterbox, When he finally came out, he walked very tentatively, and just lay in a very uncomfortable position nearby, and simply wouldn’t move again, so I popped him into his carrier and rushed him to ER.
Unfortunately, they need to sedate him to draw blood and urine. They also ordered x-rays. I am awaiting results. I’m gonna start searching the forum now …some of the words that came up When talking to the bat were pancreatitis and keto acidosis… Could ketoacidosis kick in so quickly? He has no appetite today. He had a small breakfast and that’s it but up until then for the most part he had been completely eating normal and acting normal. Yes, his numbers have been creeping up but the difference in him yesterday to today is absolutely startling. If anyone has any input, greatly appreciated.

Oh no, what a way to spend Christmas.:bighug::bighug::bighug: I'm glad you got him to the ER though.

Can you/they touch his lower legs and make sure they are warm with good circulation. Are they going to check his heart? This sounds somewhat like what happened to one of my civvies, though his was more extreme, he just toppled out of the LB then wouldn't move again. It was a stroke (saddle thrombosis) which cut off circulation to the lower legs, hence colder leg temps. Heart issues also impact appetite and blood sugars, as I found out from Neko. I'm glad they've ordered xrays for Herman. I presume they've also been checking his respiratory rate.

Has Herman ever had ketones? If never, and his numbers have been great until just lately and eating well until last night, DKA seems less likely. Though if there is some other sudden inflammation/infection it's possible.

Keep us posted.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks so much for this. I will ask the vet to check. Not a very merry Christmas. :(

Ditto everything Wendy said.

Also, with all of the chaos, is there any chance he got injured? Or munched on or was exposed to something inappropriate (toxins, tinsil, etc)?

Please post an update when you can. Thinking about you…
