Question: I have noticed that Baby's right ear has a lot of dark colored wax & have never noticed it before (left ear is clear) anyway, I have cleaned as much wax as I can without going into the ear canal because I know that is not safe. I do plan to take her to the Vet next week. Any thoughts? She is not shaking her head or scratching her ear & there are no signs of irritation or ear infection symptoms.

Re: 12/24 Baby **Ear Question

Hi Nicole,
It doesn't always mean infection, or parasites, but I'm glad you're taking her in. I feel if it was parasitic, you'd probably see it in both ears, so do NOT treat for mites before going to the vet. If they are present, your vet can give you a good cure (they often use flea meds to kill mites). Also, there is plenty of evidence that otc ear miticides can be extremely dangerous and painful for kitties. re: Infection: did the ear smell? It doesn't always smell with infection, depending on how deep the infection is in the ear, but a topical infection will probably smell. This may be the reason she's back on the juice or it could just be a side effect of a quick illness. Regardless, there's not much to be done until the vet sees it, just keep an eye out for digging, scratching, head shaking, head tilt, or ear flicking so you can report it to the vet if you see it.

Re: 12/24 Baby **Ear Question

If you have gauze pads or cotton balls you can gently clean the area yourself. You can get a mild cleanser that's made for the ears, or you could simply use some water to moisten the pad and with your finger clean the area.

Don't use swabs as you could inadvertently go too far in with that.
