Beth, remember you can always abort a cycle by feeding Elmo HC and sending him into a climb if you have to. If you can't stay awake or are going to be totally dysfunctional tomorrow, you aren't going to be able to look after either one of you! He's unpredictable right now and times like this you do what you have to do for both your sakes.
With Vetsulin, I don't think letting him eat up to 2 hours is a bad thing. Some cats won't eat a full meal all in one sitting so letting them graze for that time frame just ensures they have food on board for the most active period of the cycle.
