I have not have time to post or read comments to Pumbaa's 12/17 thread. Life has been crazy with work, etc., and I think the etc. this time of year is what puts many of us over the edge. It does me.
Pumbaa has been having a beautiful day surfing the greens at 3.0U! In the morning cycle, I only steered him once with 9% carbs food, and that was at +5 since he was at 58 and we had hours to go to nadir. Did I cheat him out of an earned dose reduction? Maybe. But my hope was to level him out and prevent another huge bounce.
Since his PMPS was only 93, I gave him (and Larry) 9% carbs food for their evening meal...which means this is what they will free-feed on the rest of the PM cycle. Normally they would get 4, 5 or 7% carbs food. But, I have another hectic day tomorrow, and am, once again, exhausted tonight, so I didn't want to have to test him every hour and keep feeding him 18% carbs food to keep him around 50. Hopefully the 9% will keep him surfing in the safe green numbers!
It was interesting that his PM +2 was the same as his PMPS. I don't recall that ever happening before. Either he goes up for the +2 or he drops. So I think the 9% carbs food is what kept him from dropping.
I'll get a +3 or +4 tonight, then get a +5 or +6, and, if I have to give higher carbed food to carry him through the night, so that I can get some sleep for a busy day of client meetings tomorrow, so be it. As I've said before, I am so very happy that Pumbaa instinctively eats more when his numbers are low. I just can not test him 24/7 and still function on no sleep.
I have to give a product recommendation here. The lancets I've been using for quite some time are the Advocate 30 gauge tri-bevel tip that I've been ordering from ADW. I was running out and re-ordered, but had to get some other 30-gauge lancets from Walmart to carry me through until the Advocates arrived. Pumbaa has NOT been happy with the other 30-gauge lancets. Yet, when I use the Advocates, he doesn't even notice he's being pricked. The triple bevel makes it just slide into the ear so easily, with no flinching. I've stuck myself with these lancets, and never felt a thing! And, if you order more than 5 boxes of 100, they are only $2.18. That's $.02 per test! I just wanted to share this, because sometimes, the cheapest isn't the best. But in this case, I can attest for how good these lancets are. And, unlike other lancets I've ordered/used before, I seldom find a defective one. In the hundreds that I have used, I think I have had to toss maybe one or two. Again, not like some other brands I have purchased before. Endorsement over.
I hope to find some time to catch up on all that I have missed, especially the comments to Pumbaa's 12/17 thread. And sleep. Pumbaa and Larry were wild last night, wrestling on my bed and wreaking havoc at all hours, preventing me from getting a good REM sleep. When Pumbaa bit my head at one point, I wanted so much to get up and test him, because I felt he was trying to communicate with me about his needs (or just being his wonderful juvenile delinquent self), but I was so tired and the bed was so nice and warm.
I'll bet he went low and was trying to tell me. Thankfully, he had food available to fuel the insulin. But I feel bad that I wasn't a good enough mom to drag my sorry butt out of the warm bed and test him, when he was trying to get my attention. This worries me. When my body needs sleep, a nuclear bomb can't wake me up. How am I going to take care of my little guy when he needs me to?
So, tonight at PM +3.5 Pumbaa is down to 62, even on 9% carbs. I not not going to try and steer this with food. If he needs a dose reduction, so be it. He's earning it. I'll try to steer him up after he's gone below 50.
