Spot is doing well today. Woke me up twice last night for a personal escort to his feeder...food gone from dishes both time, not sure who ate them, but he was insistent on me getting up to fill them for him. Slept on me from 4 am until time to get up at 5:30 am, got up, furry purry for test, and ate all his breakfast. Waited on recliner for added treats, which he did not get today since I was litterly running out of the door this morning.

Hi Guys. I have a few questions and was wondering if anyone can help me out.

Question #1 - in regards to fish oil...how much is enough to give my civvie Ralph? He seems to be having some back/hip discomfort and fish oil was suggested. I also want to give it to my other civvie, Ali and to Spot. All three kitties are getting up there in age - Ali is 10, Ralph is 11, and Spot is 13. I bought 1200 mg. ones and the vet who saw Ralph last week said one capsule was to much. Not that I don't trust her judgement, but when I asked her how much he should have, she didn't really know...just said to split the once capsule into 3's.

Question #2 - would an infection cause a non-diabetic cat's bg's to raise? I have tested civvie Ralph quite a few time since Spot's DX and he usually gives me anywhere between 50-69. Took him to the vet last week for some issues He seems to be depressed, isn't jumping up on bed/chairs as much, sleeping a lot, no crying like he used to, and just not acting Ralphie like. They did some tests and his BUN level was a tad on the higher side and his bg was 258 (I figured that was just vet stress). Vet said that his urine was clear so it looks like his kidneys are still working and didn't seem to be to overly concerned. They gave him some fluids before we left I've been testing him at least once a day since then and he's been giving me anywhere from 130-180. I think he needs his teeth cleaned, they have a lot of tarter on them, but vet said that this should not be an issue and she wasn't worried about his teeth. Now, I had my fingers in his mouth and could feel the tarter on his teeth...lumps on the teeth...and his breath is smelly. Today, when I take him back for his recheck I'm going to schedule him for a dental. So I'm thinking that if his teeth are bad, that would raise his bg's right? I'm going to check him before we leave for the vet today and then talk to the vet in regards to starting him on insulin. Any feedback on this?

Taking Ralph for a re-check today at 4:00 pm, wish us luck, please. Hope everyone has a wonderful Monday!

Hi Deb! nice start for Spot today. Hey Spot - Mannier is on his way to pick you up - tree decorating at Rusty!

No clue on the fish oil Deb - i dunno.

No expert here, but I would think that things that cause diabetic kitties BG to rise, like infections or teeth or whatever would also have the same issues in non-diabetics. It really sounds like ralphie needs a dental. I know too that they vet would not be concerned about a 200 BG number. Mine thinks that 200 is great. part of the reason we were a little behind the 8-ball in Mannie's diagnosis initially. he was testing at 220, and they were not concerned. Good luck with everything... not too sure that any of this is any help to you...

Sending good vetty vines! And I would assume that what raises BG raises BG, diabetic or not, but that's just my assumption...and we all know what they say about THAT! A couple of my kitties have really bad breath lately too, and after the holidays I'm going to look into dentals for them as well. Hope Ralph feels back to his old self really soon.

Deb,
When I took Shadoe for her dental, her dose was 14u BID.
After her dental, all spiffy and shiny, and less one upper right rotten canine, her dose dropped to around 2.75u BID.

So yes, teeth can make a BIG diff in BG.

Even if not the teeth, you have ruled out that one iffy area that can cause issue with his BG.

I'm not sure on the fish oil as a supplement, but when making raw one recipe I have calls for 700-800 mg for a batch that makes 4 to 5 meals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzxL4LBAPsI and Dr Lisa's recipe calls for 2000 for 3lbs of meat (10 - 14 days of food.) Have you tried Cosequin for the civvie w/ the joint problems?

I have a veterinary omega 3 oil supplement which comes in 600 mg capsules. The label says to give one capsule daily for animals 10 - 30 pounds. I would also suggest trying Cosequin. I tried both of those for Miss Emily, and also Adequan, which is an injected drug. Her arthritis is quite severe, and currently the only thing that is giving her any relief is Buprenorphine. She is also getting acupuncture. I had a thread on her arthritis, which contains a lot of suggestions from other on what has worked for their kitties with arthritis:

You do want to make sure that you are dealing with arthritis, and not any other illness causing muscle atrophy or hind end pain. The vet should be able to feel if there is any thickening in the joints, and you can also discuss getting some X-rays.

I would ask for a copy of the blood and urine tests. If he did a urinalysis, ask what the USG (urine specific gravity) was, and also get the b/w results. Also get the BUN, creatinine, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium results for kidney issues. Or just get a copy of everything :)

Good luck with the vet visit.

On the fish oil, I use 2Docs; Gus gets one every day; Gracie gets two....that was determined by the nutrition response testing our vet does. Here's the link:
http://www.2docs.net/shop/scripts/prodV ... product=29

Gracie is much smaller than Gus so I know it is safe to give an 8lb 14 oz cat two a day. Gus has pretty advanced arthritis, too. We give him adequan, cosequin, and bupe and other supplements to keep him comfy. I am with Linda on the kidney stuff...I would get a copy of the full panel and the urine and
check in here....lots of FD folks also have renal kitties so know what the tests mean and we could help you with questions to discuss with your vet. I have, unfortunately, found that quite often vets don't know any more about CKD than FD (except Dr. Lisa).

Hiya Deb & Spot too... :thumbup wonderfulicious as always ;-)

(((Ralph))) prayers above from us equal blessings down to you.... (((Ralph)))

Hi Deb, Sorry that I can't help you with any of your questions!!! But it's a really nice AMPS for Spottie. Rusty was so glad he could come over today to help with the tree.

Good luck on getting the info. you need. Sounds like you got a lot of good advice already.

Hugs to the whole fur family (and you, too, Deb),

Ella & Rusty
