Forget about a feeder he's afraid of them, he's a weirdo
If you ALWAYS fed him in the feeder, maybe he would get used to it?
Maybe put his treat in only one of the compartments, and get him used to eating from the feeder that way.
Then move to putting his breakfast in the auto feeder compartment.
Never used an auto feeder myself. So don't have any tips on getting a cat to eat from one.
Simply trying to think of "little steps" you could use, to get him used to that "strange device".

After all, you had to get him used to home testing in the beginning, and used little steps to get to where you are now.

lol, laughing so hard. BUT, I think you could train him like Deb says. Use the tray just for normal feedings. Then add the cover. Then use with the motor. Jax LEAPS from wherever he is when hears the motor. I should video it. I'm actually thinking of getting a second one for my civvie but they aren't cheap :p
