No on the 911, I add .5 mc to his +2 meal. The board is not loading very well on my side.

Re: 12/2 Charlie pmps 307 +2 195

I brought Charlie in to the vet today to get his pre boarding exam, had the doctor take a look at Charlies teeth he's got moderate plaque buildup so a dental cleaning will be in his future, they wanted to do the dental while he was being boarded, but with him being diabetic I'm going to do it after Christmas

if the vet can tell just by looking that he needs a dental, that suggests that it could be fairly bad. Dental issues are a problem with diabetic cats and getting teeth taken care of can help a cat get regulated. Sandy's BK went OTJ after a dental. Linda's Scooter went OTJ after a dental and her removing dry food from the house. Of course that doesn't happen to every cat - punkin had 2 dentals and it didn't help, but it's good to get it taken care of.

There is a good post on Dentals on the bottom of the New to the Group sticky.

Most people tell their vets they don't want Convenia or Metacam given for the dental. Metacam has a black box warning on it for causing renal failure in cats, but it is allowed for one shot post-surgery. Just evaluate the risks of it if you want your vet to use it. It's used more in Europe than here. It is a painkiller. Many people ask for Buprinorphin instead.

Convenia is an antibiotic that is injected and lasts in the body for 2 weeks. It's name comes from it being convenient. It was developed to treat skin infections and is used fairly liberally by vets for all sorts of things because no one wants to pill a cat. There are 2 concerns that i've heard mentioned about Convenia - one is that if a cat has an allergic reaction to it, it's a 2 week problem. The second is that it's not necessarily good for all the things it's used for.

Punkin was given both of these before I came to FDMB and he suffered no ill effects from either one. But enough people here have had bad experiences that i think it's worth mentioning so you've got a heads-up about them.

In any case, prior to the dental you might want to read up on some of these things.

Thanks for the info Julie, at what point should I start to figure out the dosing when I board him Dec 15-18, I am already in panic/fear mode of things going wrong while being boarded.
