12/18 Tigg AMPS 148 vomiting, won't drink

Tigg was diagosed about a month ago, and has been doing well. This morning, I went to test and feed him before his morning shot and he hadn't touched his FF pate from last night. I got him fresh water, he wouldn't drink any which is VERY abnormal for him.

I have 2 spreadsheets for him in my signature. The old one was when I used the AlphaTrak 3, I use the new spreadsheet now with the freestyle lite.

His +11.25 was at 149 which is the lowest I have ever seen him.
I got him fresh breakfast and water. He just stared at both of them.

His +11.5 went up to 175, but now the second lowest he's ever been and he still hadn't touched his pate so I gave him a FF with gravy and he scarfed it down but still wouldn't drink.

He was on his platform bed when I went to take his AMPS, and there was puke on it. He had puked last night, but he's a longhair cat so I hadn't thought much of it. This vomit had no food in it though. It was mostly mucus. His AMPS was back down to 148 so I haven't given him the shot yet.

At +0.5 it had gone up it 266, but he was just starting to reach numbers in the 200s last week, and his +1 was 324.

Tigg has never ignored fresh food or water so something is wrong but I don't know what. He doesn't have a fever. He did have a new food for dinner last night. He had Friskies Seafood Supreme, which he didn't finish, so I put out one of his favourite FF flavours for overnight.
His BG is back to a more normla number for him, but I don't think I should give him his shot if he isn't eating. I'm more concerned about him not drinking anyways. His ketones were fine on Sunday.

Could this all from the different food? Could he be allergic to something in it or got food poisoning from it? I don't know what I can do for him since I don't know why he is sick. I'm not concerned about his BG anymore, but there is something wrong. Please help me.

I cannot bring him to the vet right now. I am snowed in and can't get out of the driveway. I am stuck at home.

Hi Sidney,
I am sorry to read Tigg is not eating and drinking. This is very stressful. Hard to say, what the reason is.

Do yo have the chance to test for ketones again? Hopefully he is still o.k. but since Sunday is quite some time. If he has ketones, getting at least a bit insulin would be important but I am not qualified to give adivce, so I tag some moderators for you:
@Wendy&Neko @Bron and Sheba (GA) @Bandit's Mom

I know there is a sticky somewhere how to stimulate their appetite. I will search it and come back to you later.

I've got his special litter box out now, waiting for him to use it. He seemed like he wanted more of the gravy food and wasn't insterested in the normal pate, but I added some water and mashed it up to look like gravy and he is eating it right now.

Well Tigg had perfect timing, he went to the box just right after I sent my previous reply. I got a test right from the stream. I got 3 or 4 tests actually, and they were all between negative anf trace amounts.

That is great you managed to get a ketones test done..well done.
Do you have any antinausea medication such as cerenia or ondansetron at home? If so I would give him a dose as he might be nauseated..
If he continues to refuse his normal food, I would let him eat what ever he will eat even if it is not diabetic friendly. It is really important diabetic cats eat food and it won’t hurt for a few days if he eats a higher carb food.
Keep testing for ketones.

Waving "Hi" from North Vancouver.

For the next time Tigg does this to you, and it can happen, keep in mind that it's OK to give at least a half dose. Even cats about to undergo anaesthesia who cannot eat, can get a half insulin dose.

It's good you got some tests later today as it shows you that he was going to bounce, and with the right data and experience, you will eventually be able to give him his full dose at that preshot numbers.

What food did Tigg eat before his diabetes diagnosis? Maybe we can suggest something close to it that he'll like. I'm glad he finally ate for you.

Tagging @Bandit's Mom to see if she can help you combine your two spreadsheets into one.

Thanks for the advice, I think I have it figued out.

I couldn't find his special, for when he puts up with something extra well, treats on their shelf. I found the chewed open 3/4 empty bag under a chair. The treats are these tiny cubes of freeze dried liver, and I'd say Tigg ate a little less than half a bag. No wonder he didn't want his food; he ate liver all night wrong.

Sorry for the late reply, I fell asleep, but I'm happy to say Tigg is back to usual.

Happy to hear that he is well again! The little thief! :cat: You must have been really relieved to find that out. I know it is scary if they don't eat. Great job with measuring ketones! Keep it up! :bighug::bighug::bighug:
