Good Morning LL! Add a 6th P for puke to the other 5 Ps this morning. Tess threw up her first breakfast after about half an hour. She went right back to her food bow,l though she didn't finish second breffis. I think she is working on a hairball, but we will watch her this morning.

Last day of the clay marathon. got to go put on the finishing touches.

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 +1~165

Hope Tess works out the hairball issue and feels better.

Have a great and productive day

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 +1~165

Nice numbers this morning Tess - yay! But no more pukus OK?

Good luck with the last phases - hope all goes well. You should post photos! :-D

Tess ate most of the last three meals and it has stayed down. Her BG is going up, so not to worry about insulin. But she is not feeling to hungry. Probably a hair ball in there somewhere. Does not seem to be in distress. Ate a little more and is grooming herself in her little cube. Ann is finishing up her clay projects. I made cheese cake for her class :-D

Tess and Mannie pukus both in one day? I think they are sending telepathic messages to each other.

Hope all is going well, Ann. LL ain't the same without your wonderful sense of humor but we totally understand. I think everyone has been a little pressed for time lately with the holidays. Hope Tess gives you a great evening....whatever your definition of that is considering!!

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 Blood in pee!!

Down a little from +11, but a new problem. There is blood in her urine. She had crystals once years ago, but it was cleared up. She definitely isn't happy and tried to pee on the couch. Does anyone know of what else this is a symptom? I tried calling the vet and they were closed. I don't know if it is serious enough to run her over to the emergency vet or not.

I'll cross post in health also.

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299

UTI? Cystitis? Is she having trouble urinating? Could be a blockage? Maybe you can call the ER Vet?

Shesshhh - I hope she is OK.

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 blood in urine

I called the ER vet and they said it was up to me. but they were a little crazy right now. I just don't know if it is safe to wait until morning or not.

Tess has been to the box several times only peeing a little. She has been sitting in our laps purring and grooming, just not really happy.

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 blood in urine

Hi Ann, I would definitely at least call the ER vet. You don't want to mess around, especially if she is trying to pee and can't.

Thinking positive thoughts for Tess.

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 blood in urine

I am no expert -- but it sounds like a UTI. ??? I do know that if she can't pee and is under stress: that could be a blockage and then I'd go without question. My DD's cat went through that. they went to the ER - completely blocked, a very serious problem. He was in pain, and it was really apparent that they had a problem. I hope some others here come along soon... I just don't know how long you can wait.

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 blood in urine

Ann....as you may remember, Gracie has had chronic FLUTD and she had many episodes like what you are describing. For her, in the past, she has never had bacteria or crystals. Typically cats presenting with these symptoms do not have bacteria and, if it is not crystals, it will run its course whether they are on ABs or not because it is just an inflammation of the bladder lining which is associated with the blood. However, if a cat has crystals, it's a different story. Females rarely block but it can happen so if you don't take her, you must make sure she is producing even a tiny bit of urine. More importantly, regardless of what it is,it is painful. The other thing is that with diabetic cats, you always have an increased chance that it is bacterial because of the sugar. I would imagine that they would put her on ABs as the C&S or UA would probably have to be sent off unless it is a big, well equipped ER. I know that doesn't help you make a decision and if they give her ABs, she's still going to be uncomfortable tonight unless they also give her bupe.

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 +1`264 blood in urine

Down at +1, and eating well now. Tess is having a nice bath in her cube.

I called the ER and they are very busy right now, so we would have to wait. I'd rather wait here where she is less stressed. Marjorie, she is producing some urine, that's how I know there is blood. I've Googled it and read that it usually isn't an emergency un;\less totally blocked. So I thik we will watch her here, if she starts to look distressed we can got to the ER, hopefully not so busy in an hour or two. Right now she has just eaten well and is having a nice general bath. Anyone think I should take immediate action?

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 +1`264 blood in urine

I have read the same info - if she can pee some it isn't a true emergency. It would make me uneasy - as I am sure you are - watch her closely, and act if things change?

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 +1`264 blood in urine

I think that is reasonable....like I said, female cats rarely block, but it can happen so it's important to monitor her.

Re: 12/15 Tess AMPS~173 PMPS~299 +1~264 +2~153 blood in urin

The one cat I took to an ER vet because she was peeing a little here, a little there, a little more somewhere else.... was a bacterial infection. No cries of pain, just drops here and there, with traces of blood.

She kept trying to go, because the irritation made it feel like she needed to do so.

If you start hearing crying, or there is no urine despite fluid consumption, that would prompt me to go to the ER vet because of the risk of kidney stones and blockages.

No.

Please take a look at my Urinary Tract Health page linked below.

A couple of quick comments:

1) blood in the urine should NOT make anyone jump to the conclusion that it is an infection

2) she needs a C and S (unless she is improved by tomorrow and then you *may* be able to forego it - discuss with your vet) but most of these cats present with an empty bladder....therefore....SQ fluids...cage with no litter box...usually within 1 hour the bladder will be full enough to tap

3) I can't remember the last time...if ever...I encountered a blocked female

4) this is why I love clumping litter so that you can monitor the SIZE and NUMBER of pee balls

5) we need to stop overdosing these types of cats with antibiotics

6) yes...if glucose is in the urine and/or she has a dilute urine...that will make her more prone (20-30% chance vs 1% chance) to infections but shotgun treating with antibiotics without a C and S is NEVER a good idea. She could still be a simple case of STERILE cysttitis.

If a cat is more likely to have an infection (low USG/sugar in the urine)...AND the in-house UA shows signs of an infection....then I don't mind starting ABs PENDING the C and S results

7) PAIN MEDS...pain meds...pain meds...as discussed on my website

etc...etc...etc....

Re: 12/15 Tess PMPS~299 +1~264 +2~153 +5~135 blood in urine

Dr. Lisa, thank you for responding. Unfortunately I think you posted about one minute after we left for the ER vet and as you may have guessed they gave us clavamox and no pain meds. We will be contacting our regular vet in the morning. I have just reread you article.

Tess had gone to the LB again and out of it, squatting but only producing small amounts of urine w/ blood in it. She was obviously in distress although not blocked, so we decided to take her to the ER. Her general physical exam was good, normal temp, pulse etc. She said Tess's teeth were in very good condition. The bladder was too small to do cystocentesis.

I am feeling we should take her to our vet tomorrow to have the C and S done to know if there is actually an infection or an inflammation. Or will the fact that she has already been started on abs have a negative effect on the tests?

Surprisingly, since we got back Tess has been much more relaxed and settled. She only seems to be in distress after a trip to the LB, but no pain otherwise. I guess it was worth the trip to the ER for the peace of mind.

Re: 12/15 Tess PMPS~299 +1~264 +2~153 +5~135 blood in urine

This is such a frustrating issue for me to deal with..... resulting in a lot of red ink on my UT Health web page.

I would not waste my money on a C and S now that she has been put on ABs. I also would not stress her with another vet visit.
