Hi Everyone, The kitties are all crying out for "cimmamum" cookies, so I'm posting an old recipe that my mother got from one of her friends. These are my absolute favorite Xmas cookies. I remember them from the 1940s, so the recipe is at least that old and may be from the 1930s.
I hope you like them.

Ella

CINNANUTS

1 cup shortening (half unsalted butter, half Crisco)
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teasp. vanilla
1 egg yolk (reserve egg white for later)

sift together the following:
2 cups flour
1 teasp. salt
2 Tablespoons cinnamon

Cream the shortning and brown sugar. Add vanilla and egg yolk and beat 'till light.
Whack in the flour mixture (you can use a beater, a spoon, or your hands; I use my hands). (The dough is thick.)

Spread (push) the dough onto a cookie sheet. (It should be about 1/4 inch thick; work it until it fills the entire sheet.)

Spread the unbeaten egg white on top and sprinkle with 1/2 cup chopped walnuts.

Bake at 300 degrees for 1/2 hour.

Cut into squares immediately. Let the squares cool on a wire rack. Get out of the way!!

Yum! I am definitely going to try those. DS and DH would love them. Here is a dip I do a lot that people go crazy for:

Beer Dip.

1/3 cup of Hellmans Mayo
1/3 cup Miracle Whip
1 pkg of Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix
2 blocks of cream cheese ( I use 2-8oz tubs of the whipped cream cheese, makes life a whole lot easier)
Finely Shredded Cheese.
The most important part! BEER! LOL just a 1/3 cup though…………and then you can drink the rest.
Goes the best with Tostitos or similar chips.

Mix all ingredients in bowl. You can just put in shredded cheese as you like it, a little or a lot doesn’t matter. If you need to make this ahead of time, you can, just be sure you take it out of the fridge in time for the everything to get soft again; otherwise, there is no chip that can survive a “dip” in this stuff. ENJOY!

Truffles

1 pkg oreos
1 8-oz pkg cream cheese, a little softenened
bar of Ghirardelli dark, milk, or white chocolate

Crush the oreos in a bowl or food processor until they are very fine crumbs. Stir in the cream cheese and roll into balls.

Chop chocolate into pieces. Melt chocolate in double boiler slowly and then dip balls in the chocolate. Put on wax paper to harden.

Cranberry Dessert
Spread 2 C. fresh washed cranberries on a greased 10” pie plate. Sprinkle with ½ C sugar and ½ C coarsely chopped walnuts.
Beat 2 eggs till light and fluffy, slowly add ¾ C sugar, beat till well blended, alternately add 1C flour & 3/4 C ,melted butter and 3/4 Teas. Almond Extract. Pour over cranberries, bake at 325 for about 4 minutes.

RUM CAKE RECIPE

1 or 2 quarts of rum
1 cup butter
1 tsp sugar
2 lg eggs
1 cup dried fruit
baking powder
1 tsp soda
lemon juice
brown sugar
nuts

Before you start, sample the rum to check for quality. Good, isn't it? Now go ahead.

Select a large mixing bowl, measuring cup, etc. Check the rum again. It must be just right. To be sure rum is of the highest quality, pour one level cup of rum into a glass and drink it as fast as you can. Repeat.

With an electric mixer, beat 1 cup butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 seaspoon of thugar and beat again. Meanwhile, make sue that the rum is of the finest quality. Try another cup. Open second quart if necessary.

Add 2 arge leggs, 2 cups fried druit and beat till high. If druit gets stuck in beaters, just pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the rum again, checking for tonscisticity. Next sift 3 cups of pepper or salt (it really doesn't matter.) Sample the rum again.

Sift + pint of lemon juice. Fold in chopped butter and strained nuts. Add 1 babblespoon of brown thugar, or what ever color you can find. Wix mel. Grease oven and turn cake pan to 350 gredees. Now pour the whole mess into the coven and ake. Check the rum again, and bo to ged.

:-D :-D

I'll have to pop in later with my Grandmother's Holiday Sponge Cake recipe (and Sandbakkles, if I can find it!), but this one has been a go-to of mine for years for gifting, potlucks, etc.

Cake Mix Cookies

1 boxed cake mix
1 egg
1 8 oz. container of cool whip.
Powdered/Confectioners sugar for rolling

Mix it all up, chill the dough (it will be VERY sticky!). Roll into 3/4" balls (I find it helpful to spray your hands with cooking spray for rolling), then roll the ball into the powdered sugar and place on a lined baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes.

I make strawberry, lemon and devils food. This time of year, you could easily get everything you need for under $2/batch. Grab cello bags, some ribbon or raffa and maybe even a basket from dollar tree and you've got a lovely homemade gift.... I've paired these with an inexpensive coffee mug (seriously love the dollar tree!) and a homemade hot cocoa mix (reminded of this by this post I saw earlier today!).

I need a good appetizer recipe to bring to a party on Saturday. I would like to bring something that doesn't have any meat or cheese in it. Any ideas?

Georgia:

If shrimp is OK, this ie an easy Herbed Shrimp Dip recipe. If you really need to save time, you can buy shrimp that are already peeled, deveined, and cooked. I've served it with pita chips but you can also use any kind or chip or cracker or even veggies.

1 pound uncooked large shrimp, unpeeled
2 green onions, coarsely chopped
1 shallot, chopped
2 tablespoons chopped fresh tarragon
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup sour cream
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

Bring medium saucepan of lightly salted water to boil. Add shrimp and cook just until bright pink and opaque in center, about 3 minutes. Drain; rinse under cold water. Peel and devein shrimp; transfer to processor. Add green onions, shallot, and tarragon; using on/off turns, process until shrimp are finely chopped. Transfer shrimp mixture to medium bowl. Mix in mayonnaise and next 3 ingredients. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cover and chill at least 2 hours. (Can be made 1 day ahead. Keep chilled.)

These are some yummy looking recipes, guys! Hard to know which one to try first, but I know the one that has to be saved 'till last!   Celi!

Chocolate Peanut Fudge

1 pkg. (12 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter (creamy)
3 cups confectioners sugar
1/2 cup milk

Melt chocolate chips in double boiler. Remove from heat. Add peanut butter. Stir well. Add confect. sugar and milk. Stir well. Place in a well buttered 8 x 8 x 2 pan. Chill thoroughly. Easiest Fudge Ever.

No rum, but you can add walnuts if you are feeling a little nutty!

As a lot of you know, I'm vegan, so no butter, etc. But, that doesn't mean I don't like to indulge in a good, juicy loaf of garlic bread. We tried this "non-traditional" recipe for the first time yesterday....O.M.G. That's all I can say:

Garlic Tarragon Bread

Holiday Sponge Bars

Cake
4 eggs, separated
2 c. sugar
1 Tbsp. vanilla
1 c. hot water
2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder

Frosting
2 c. sifted confectioners/powdered sugar
1/2 c. butter (room temperature)
1 tsp. vanilla

For cake, mix dry ingredients, water, vanilla and beaten egg yolks. Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour into a greased jelly roll pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. For frosting, beat together butter and vanilla and gradually add in powdered sugar, beating until fully combined and fluffy.

Cool and frost the cake. Top 1/3 with red and green sugar sprinkles, 1/3 with sweetened coconut flakes and 1/3 with chopped walnuts or pecans.
