 We tried appetite stimulants last night and although he ate up a storm, by morning he looked like he felt worse & seemed grumpy, so I decided it was time for a vet exam. The past few meds we've tried just haven't given him the bounce I've expected to see. Turns out he has a significant mass in his abdomen, the vet said there's no way he's going to want to eat with what she could feel in there. I've already ruled out surgery & aggressive treatments for a number of reasons. She said she didn't think it would be cruel to bring him back home for a couple days and see if I can keep him comfortable, so I decided to do that, rather than have him euthanized today - I just couldn't face that. I have a PTS appt for Sat morning, but will of course take him in sooner if he is miserable. Most of the time lately he seems moderately content, just wants to sleep under his blanket. I have reservations about PTS if they are not actually in distress, but it seems like it would be cruel to drag it out for longer than a couple more days if he's not eating and just wasting away, and I'm sure whatever's going on inside him is at best uncomfortable. I'm going to go back to the Cerenia, that's the only med I've seen lately where he has looked like he felt better on it, and of course continue Budesonide & insulin to keep him as comfortable as I can. I have some Bupe on hand if needed.

Oh my, I'm so, so sorry Joanna.

You guys will be in our thoughts. Try to stay strong - I know easier said than done, this is so difficult.

(((joanna and bix)))) Oh joanna, I am so very sorry. Such an awful thing to have to do, even though it is done out of love. I know you are strong and will take good care of him. I will be thinking about both of you. Thanks for letting us know.

((((Joanna & Bix)))) I'm so sorry to hear about our Bix, my heart is breaking for you. Take these days to cherish and remember all the good times you've had together. The last gift of love is the hardest.

I will be holding you and Bix in my heart, my thoughts and my prayers.

I've linked an article on How do you know it is time. It was written about a dog but the principles apply to all pets, it's hard to read with out tears but it may help.

(((((Joanna))))), I've seen this post and am so sorry I did'nt open it sooner. So deeply sorry about this. I know I would have wanted to do just what you did and have some time to just be with tomtom. Yet it is bittersweet I know. Those final hugs, and long gazing looks and oh god, I'm getting all choked up.
I have you and Bix in my thoughts...and in my heart. You are not hurting alone.
Lori
(((((Bix)))))

I want to extend my sympathies to you as well. I know how hard this must be and how devastating. You have my thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.

Oh {{{Joanna}}}! There is nothing that I can say that will help but I am still so sorry for your loss. Know that we are thinking about you and sending you our love and support.

Joanna, I am so sorry. It breaks my heart to see you and Bix go through this. I know how much you love him. Its very hard to know the right time to make that awful decision, but whenever you do it, it will be out of love for Bix. My prayers are with you and Bix.

Thank you everyone :YMHUG: He is resting comfortably today - earlier he sat in a sunny spot & washed his face a bit, so for the moment we are just hanging out & seeing how things go (I may cancel Saturday, certainly will if he continues looking as good as he is today). He's eating off & on, which is actually better than a few days ago (?), and we had nice snuggle time on the couch last night & this morning.

I'm sorry Joanna. I know you'll take good care of him for the time he has left. Even though our kitties are good at hiding their pain, I'm sure your instincts and all the years you've spent together will tell you when it's time.

Some foods to try to help him stay comfortable: mashed bananas (baby food), tuna juice, bonito flakes (from the chinese grocery).

Terri
