Rocket & his Mom

Member Since 2010
hi LL family,

this morning at roughly 3:37 am (can't remember the time) i had to take Rocket to the ER.....what started out as a routine subq session turned out into a nightmare....he had gone potty just prior when i noticed he couldn't use his hind legs even with my help of raining his middle body to see if he would start walking....

at the thought of a clot...i got dressed and in less than 10 mins we were at the ER....only to place him down (at the ER vet's request) to see if he used his hind legs...and lo and behold...he starts walking ohmygod_smile ....i looked at the vet....and i told her i wasn't crazy....

they checked his eyes for the retina in case it had detached if indeed is hypertension he has....as we still don't know...eyes are ok...then they had to take him to the back to be further examined...and as always he gave them attitude....so they took pulse on both back paws and they were fine....

we got home just in time for his insulin....

AMPS 184 ...not a bad number all things considered....

i emailed the reg vet further bp readings...i just called and she said they're awaiting still on the results but she is leaning more on the Benazepril....

here are two theories....more like gut instinct for me...
1) after using the lb as he did both #1 and #2 he probably strained his already arthritic hind legs hence the inability to use them after...and might have needed a while to get them using again...

2)each reading that i've done on the bp has been at different times but the higher numbers seem to be closer to when he has received the buprenorphine (bupe)...so wonder if that is playing a factor in the higher bp...

gave both theories to the vet....i'm not awaiting to see what she says...though when i chatted with her briefly she seemed to agree with my #1 theory...

i took the morning off work in case i needed to take him to the reg vet....have slept very little....but Rocket has enjoyed a few minutes out on the balcony on his bed that was all covered in snow...i had to lift him up and put another bed on top of that one and a heated pad....he was comfy....

never a dull monent here in this household... nailbite_smile nailbite_smile

here is yesterday... http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=58515

your prayers is what keeps this little guy going...so keep them coming....much appreciated....

off to work i go....

he is eating ok....

keeping you all in my prayers...beans that are not well or on the road to recovery, and kitties that are having challenges....

Re: 12/13 Rocket AMPS 184-prayers are still needed

Prayers continue for Rocket, and you. You have been through so much together.

Re: 12/13 Rocket AMPS 184-prayers are still needed

Wondering about mild electrolyte imbalances due to the CRF and fluids. Something to ask vet.

Re: 12/13 Rocket AMPS 184-prayers are still needed

I am glad that his hind legs started working by the time you got to the vets, and that his retinas looked ok .. Continued thoughts and prayers your way ..

Re: 12/13 Rocket AMPS 184-prayers are still needed

Healing vines and prayers for Rocket!! Hang in there Claudia. You are such a great bean!

Re: 12/13 Rocket AMPS 184-prayers are still needed

Hi Claudia,
I'm glad that your quick trip to the ER turned out not to be not an emergency. It's good to try to find out when the medical procedures might interact negatively. You and Rocket are an awesome duet. Sending prayers and healing vines and lots of hugs,

Ella & Rusty

this is what the vet had to say regarding his protein/urine results

Hi-

He does not have a significant amount of protein in the urine, so no indication for benazepril. Also, as mentioned, it really only has a marginal effect on blood pressure.

Buprenorphine can cause a mild decrease in blood pressure, but nothing profound. That is, he would not have systolic BPs in the 200s that drops to 140-150 due to the buprenorphine.

In our setting, allowing for stress of being here (and of being sampled), we do not react to blood pressure until it is definitely, consistently over 160 systolic, more so even 180+. End organ (eg. eyes) damage occurs with BP consistently over 190 systolic. Higher diastolic reflects how well the heart muscle perfuses, and if high, can also be a problem. In our environment, we consider it high when consistenly over 100. So, taken from our point of view, most of these numbers would not warrant treatment, especially with the eyes being normal. Perhaps he should be more relaxed at home, and lower - more like our numbers. I am leary, though, to use amlodipine and risk making him go too low. Hypotension can reduce perfusion of organs, with the kidney and pancreas most susceptible to harm.

Perhaps safest to monitor further, and possibly even get one done here so we can see what it is in our 'normal' setting.

i am not letting it be...i will continue to do the bp readings at home and i'm taking him on friday afternoon to get them to do a bp reading....i have asked the vet what the number on the protein/urine is....i still have the feeling he does need the benazepril....

thoughts for the experts?

Re: 12/13 Rocket AMPS 184-prayers are still needed

i have now gotten the results on the protein/cre ratio
Protein/Creatinine Ratio 0.18 <=0.5 Ratio

this is what the vet says:
This is a quantified measurement, not a colour change, so an actual number is generated. It is significantly below a significant number as you will see. He is not losing protein through his kidney. This is not a significant amount of protein in the urine. Also, please note that the dipsticks are not accurate enough and 1+ is not often associated with significant protein. In fact, this can sometimes be an artifact.

Yes, let's see where the blood pressures go through the week, and go from there.

so i will keep track of his bp readings at home and Friday he goes to the clinic to get a bp reading done....

your prayers are working....keep them coming...he has enough on the go as is....

Re: 12/13 Rocket AMPS 184-prayers are still needed

Good news on the UP:CR test! I am still sending prayers, but I'm glad to see that this test came back with a good result.

i continue to keep a close eye on Rocket...

PMPS 101

he didn't eat while i was at work...but he had his meal just now at shot time...
he seems pretty alert

we will see how it goes tonight....

i'm extremely exhausted....barely staying awake...

I hope you get some good sleep tonight and have an uneventful night with Rocket. Sending prayers for his continued fight and decent health.
A year or so ago, I took J.D. to the ER because his head was tilting. When I took him there, the doctor said "which side do you think it's tilting on?"
It's like when you take a car to a mechanic and it won't act up while it's being looked at.
