Seeing some lower numbers over the last 24 hours. Duncan has had only LC wet for the last 18 hours or so. :)

Going to do more testing today to see if the blue comes back and how long it stays. If I'm not too tired tonight I will do a few checks over night too. Felt good to shoot that 210, and not see any more pink for now.

Duncan is doing really well. Super happy and clean and fluffy. It's been at least 6 months since he's acted this way. I just didn't notice the steady decline. So glad to have him back in high spirits.

? - Sometimes the day after I test a certain spot on the ear it appears inflamed. Do you guys use alcohol preps before you stick for a test? So far if I use the other ear for a bit it heals just fine. Any advice on this??

Re: 12/13 (?) Duncan +11 197, PMPS 210, AMPS 139!, +2 96

Down we go, nice and easy Duncan....no bouncing!

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89

I have some dry EVO it's 7% carbs should I give him a few kibbles of it? ???

My hypo solution is honey...? Going to test again in 30 minutes...?

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89

give me a sec to look at your SS k.

fwiw, you're not in danger territory yet so hold on a sec

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89

ok, his nadir doesn't seem to be set in stone yet so can't say if he's going to ride smoothly along for a bit or keep dropping and by how much sooooo i would test perhaps every 1/2 hour if you can for the next few hours. that may change if he levels off or starts coming back up early.

i wouldn't jump right to drastic measures (honey, dry, etc...) just yet because like i said you're not in danger territory yet.

what you could do is feed him a little of his regular food. that might help to steady him out some. not too much though because you don't want him to get full and not eat anymore in case you need him to for the next few hours.

also, fwiw, i think that extra fattening of the dose is what you're seeing here along with no more contraband :-)

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89

Ok, thanks. :) He is feeling great right now, so maybe it will level out. He's chasing around his favorite toy - a fresh green bean! So, no signs or anything yet. Just telling myself this is a normal number for a non-diabetic cat.

Breathing, breathing... :) cat_pet_icon

Below 50 but don't panic. Someone else will be here with you. Trust your eyes and the meter.

just as an aside, there have been a few kitties who had exercise induced hypos so don't let him play too agressively. don't make him unhappy and make him stop completely but if he gets to racing around at 100mph like a couple of my boys do, you might try to distract him :-)

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76

He's too old to play very long any more. He just walks around with it in his mouth and occasionally tosses it and pounces. He's sleeping on it now. :-D
Poor thing's going to have to get another poke in about 10 mins here. He has been playing a TON more since we started insulin. So nice to see him happy.

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76

Hi Sara

He is at an extremely safe number right now. You don't want to intervene unless he goes below 50. If he does, just give him a tsp of LC food and retest after 30 mins and see where he is. If he gets below
50, he has earned a .25u dose reduction.

He's coming down fairly slowly but if he tolerates it, you can test him 30 mins from his last test and see where he is. Just post. I'll be looking for your number.

Any questions?

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76

Sara:

Just a few quick things:

You don't need to use alcohol wipes for anything. You don't want to dry his ear out. The best thing to use is neosporin ointment with pain relief. Just dab it on lightly after you test and wipe it off before the next test. Alternating
ears is best if you can but one ear usually bleeds better than the other. Are you using a rice sock to warm his ear?

In my signature block is a link to Handling Low Numbers. It's a good one for you to print and have accessible at all times in case someone is not around. That's what we want to follow today if he goes below 50. K?

ETA: I have to run and test Gracie really quick. BRB. Just post his number when you get it. If he is below 50, just a tsp of LC food and retest in 30.

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76, +3.5 83

83! :) looks like we're just in a low cycle. I will test again at +6 and see where he's at. I need to let this poor boy have a nap.

Thanks for being here. I try not to stress out but I really do. I know what to do, it's just the unknown still. These are his lowest numbers so far. Thanks to the food.

He's a good bleeder so I don't use a sock or do anything to prep. And I just changed to smaller lancets and am still getting plenty of blood.

Good day! dancing_cat

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76, +3.5 83

Sara:

There isn't a lot of difference between 76 and 83...they are essentially the same number. I'd feel more comfortable if you recheck in an hour just to be sure he has nadired and is coming up since he hasn't had
alot of low numbers. Sometimes they'll plateau a bit and then come down. Once you have more data and know him better, then you can decide how long to wait.

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76, +3.5 83

nice. :-)

fwiw, i'm not sure if waiting til +6 for the next is what i would do since this is the first time you've seen these numbers but if he's acting otherwise ok and you're comfortable with that that's fine. i'll be around for another 6 hours or so since i'm at work and will watch for your posts

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76, +3.5 83

Ok, thanks, I will. I also need to pay close attention at the end of this cycle and get a +10, +11 because he goes low right at the end sometimes. That will be at 8pm and 9pm tonight - shot at 10pm (I am central time zone in MN.)

It's kind of like starting over now that he is 100% wet. Different looking cycle, different numbers etc...

Re: 12/13 Duncan AMPS 139!, +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76, +3.5 83

Great....we'd all like to see that test in an hour I think :-D

It's always smart to get a +2 to see where the cycle may be headed since the +2 should be close to the PS. If it is much lower, then you should be on the watch for an active cycle....like today. So nice on getting the +2.

And yes, great idea to get a +10 or +11. If he continues running low, I like the +10 to see if he comes up a bit at the end of the cycle.

Have a great day. Good job!

Re: 12/13 Duncan +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76, +3.5 83, +4.5 81

Holding steady-ish +4.5 81

Any thoughts? It's lunch time too so he is eating his normal meal now.

Re: 12/13 Duncan +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76, +3.5 83, +4.5 81

looking good to me :-)

factor in lunch and the time and i think you could probably wait until at least+6 now for the next test

Re: 12/13 Duncan +2 96, +2.5 89, +3 76, +3.5 83, +4.5 81, +6

If his ears show evidence of testing, make sure to press a cotton ball or a tissue against the spot for a few seconds after the test. It prevents bruising. Press firmly with one finger on top and one finger underneath, you won't hurt him.

Sometimes wet food makes all the difference. Good job!
