12/12 Ori went from 313 to 36 in 2.5 hours - need dosing advise

Ori (and Erica)

Member Since 2019
So - Ori has been fighting a cold but seems otherwise fine. Had been raising dose and using the 2.5 bid for about 5 days and today she went from 313 to 36 in less than 3 hours. She was calling for food, loudly, so I tested her.

I gave her a tsp. of Karo and a can of Friskees with gravy. I'll check in an hour.

I have a pet sitter coming next four days - I think her dose is too high and she was better at 2.0.

Really need some guidance here - and if I cut to 2.0 do I have some gravy tomorrow as the 2.5 depot drains.

(I have a type 1 family member - I am not freaked out - just not sure what to do about dosing).

Thanks in advance!

Erica and Ori

She has earned a reduction in dose down to 2.25 units however with you going away you will need to reduce the dose further.
I would reduce the dose down to 2 units tonight if she is high enough to dose.

is the pet sitter going to test the BG?
Is she going to be staying there or just calling in twice a day

Will your kitty eat for the pet sitter?

please make sure she knows what to do in case of low numbers.

I’m going to tag @Marje and Gracie to see if she agrees with the holiday dose of 2 units.

Actually, did you re-test to make sure it wasn't a bad strip or test? If the re-check is still in the 30s, you want to get another test in no more than 30 min to be certain the numbers are coming up. And, repeat until numbers are in at least the 60s and don't trend back down.

This is the link to the instructions on how to handle low numbers.

I agree. If for no other reason, it's hard to measure a dose that's not on a line. I would always have my petsitter shoot a reduced dose that was on one of the marked increments on the syringe.

Erica - the depot does need to drain if that was, in fact, an accurate test. However, Ori's numbers may bounce. One action may offset the other. It just depends on how long it takes Ori to clear a bounce.

While we're waiting for the re-test, I'd definitely reduce the dose down for the petsitter. Cats don't always eat for others like they'll eat for us so it'll be better for her to run a little high instead of taking a chance.

Is your sitter going to be testing?

Hi. I just retested and she 267 so I may have given her too much. That’s ok.

Sitter is staying and she will be testing. She is a nursing student too!

She has all the instructions and supplies. It’s a literal pharmacy around here. :)

Cat knows her and will eat for anymore. She’s a piggie.

As long as she is safe.. that is the main thing.
I would still drop the dose tonight if you are leaving tomorrow down to 2 units and leave it there for the vacation unless she earns a reduction.

having a cat that a piggie has its advantages!
Have a good holiday.

That’s quite a lot haha!

I’m sure you know but I’ll just reiterate: you want to feed small amounts so they don’t get filled up in case they continue dropping. ECID but typically we’ll advise to feed 1 tsp at a time. I feed 1 tbsp because that’s what I found works for Ming.

whenever you get a low number, retest. Then feed accordingly if the retest is true. Then test 20-30 mins after feeding. Food takes about 20-30 mins to take effect.

I might have overdone it. Oops.

When we were new, I'd learned that if China dropped low, I should give her some Karo/honey/syrup ...but I wasn't clear about how much!

So I dumped about a cup full into a bowl and gave it to her and she lapped it up! (who knew a cat would like maple syrup??)

After the panic was over, I found out it was supposed to be a drop or two....not half the bottle!!

We learn from our Oops's!

Ok - that makes me feel better. I just used a dropperful - it's like a 1/4 teaspoon.

Yes, sitter is a nurse in training and is staying. Kitty knows and likes her. She has all the info to handle lows too. :)

Yeah - I overdid it - but she was so HUNGRY and bossy about it.

I have a magnifying glass that I use to read the dosing - otherwise I could not see it. I am expecting a bounce. But 2 units feels better and she did ok on 2 units.

Y'all are AMAZING! Thank you so much. She has a full belly and is fast asleep on her heating pad like the diva she is. She sure did YELL FOR FOOD when she was low.

That’s good she yelled for food when low.
Much better than refusing to eat.
My Sheba was a piggie but it came in handy when she dropped low

I would reduce the dose to 2u.

We would like for you to use our spreadsheet as the one you have was pirated from us by a FB group. They “blow up” on us if we try to view them from a tablet or phone and that means we can’t give good dosing advice. We ask everyone with this kind of SS to switch. Pls see this post. It will also tell you the info we need in your signature block. Thank you.

If you will send me a PM tonight, I’ll get some info from you, set it up, and transfer data and it will be all ready for you or the petsitter.
