12/11 Johnny AMPS 310 PMPS 340 - dental advice

Johnny had a nice Caturday. Lots of sleeping in the basket with mittens, scarves and other snuggly winter gear. I was doing some organizing in the bedroom earlier and he *had* to watch. Poor boy was falling asleep standing up, but can't miss any action. Finally, the basket called to him! I love when kitties act like our weekend activities are throwing off their usual schedules (which they probably are!).

Thanks to Cheryl for posting to me on yesterday's thread. To answer her questions: Johnny is a free-feeder, as are our other two cats. He eats only wet food (FF 2%). I'll add something to my spreadsheet about the bloodwork that was done, but I don't have more information other than everything came out "ok" according to the vet. Should I ask for more specifics? Johnny's never had a dental and when we had him at the vet two weeks ago, I asked about that. She'd like him to be more regulated before doing the dental, but said it's probably a great idea.

Also, she mentioned that she probably wouldn't have bumped him up to the fat .25u, but that it's our decision. Let me know if anyone else thinks we should go back to .25 tonight (7:30 CT). I don't want to jump ahead of where Johnny needs us to be.

Re: 12/11 Johnny AMPS 310 +3 (247) +6 (126) - go back to .25

If you can get a copy of the labs and put them on a tab in your SS or link them separately, that will let people take a look. (Look at how I have Gabby's labs set up on her SS for one example.)

So here's the conundrum. Lots of vets say they want a cat better regulated before doing a dental. However, the inflammation caused by gingivitis or the possibility of a dental infection can raise BG numbers. Without the dental, the numbers will stay elevated and there's always the potential that the dental problem could get worse.

Re: 12/11 Johnny AMPS 310 PMPS 340 - go back to .25u?

I know what you mean, Sienne. If it is an issue with his teeth/gums, we are just putting a band aid (that's not doing a great job) on him twice a day instead of getting at the root of the problem.

I feel more and more like he needs a dental. Should I push my vet a little or find a vet that doesn't push back? Sienne, what do you think your vet would do? I'm not sure I understand the risks with him being unregulated (was he *ever* regulated when on insulin? seemed like he was always on his way somewhere else). I want Johnny to be safe of course, but this is kind of a rock and a hard place if it is teeth issues bringing his numbers up. Could this have been an issue all along and we managed to get him OTJ despite?

Kicking myself for not getting this done back in Sept when he was first OTJ. Sometimes you just want to celebrate not having any medical things going on, you know? And the vet has never pushed for one. But, knowing this board, I knew it was a good idea. Ugh...
