Started Callie on gabapentin today for fhs/ seizures so she's pretty out of it. The vet says that she'll experience less sedation after about a week on this dose.

Pretty big early drop in bg but usually after these drops she levels out or goes up. I'll check in about an hour to make sure.

Thinking about everyone affected by the severe storms in the US. Surf safely kitties.

What dose? My vet started Bama on 100mg capsules every 12 hours for arthritis pain about nine months ago that really knocked him out. She then reduced to 50 mg. in a compounded liquid but I really don't like how it affects him. I don't think he likes it either.

50 mg twice a day to start. (We got 100 mg capsules and split them open.) The vet said that Callie could end up needing as much as 100 mg three times a day which is hard to imagine since she's been out cold most of the day on the first 50. Is Bama still pretty knocked out when he takes 50mg or is he experiencing other side effects?

Have you tried Adequan for Bama's arthritis? I know others have had mixed results from it but we started giving Callie the shots in October and I think it has really helped her.

I'm not currently giving Bama anything for arthritis. He is so hard to pill. Wanted to start the Adequan shots but his CKD advanced into Stage 4 and I've been dealing with that. Sub-q fluids, famotidine once per day and Ondansetron oral once daily and Ondansetron transdermal once daily. Between all the BG testing and trying to feed the curve, get him to eat, and get his meds in him, I've put the arthritis treatment off for now. I've got to find a way to get the phosphate binder in his food to get his phosphorus levels down.

I don't know if his arthritis pain is affecting him or if it's the CKD. He has been feeling better the last couple of days, eating well, and not treating me like I am the enemy. I think he has built up a tolerance for the Gabapentin so your vet is probably right that Callie will, too. I haven't given it to him in a while. When I did, he seemed spacey, staggered around and I was afraid he'd fall off something and get hurt. I think Gabapentin is actually for seizures so it may do Callie some good. The pain reduction is secondary or off label use, I think, and probably less effective for actual pain relief. They just seem like they're in less pain because of the sedation.

That's what I've been worried about with Callie too. She still likes to go up to her high perches but I'm concerned about her navigating her way down when she seems so off-balance. Hopefully her vet is right and she becomes less sedated quickly as she gets used to the gaba.

I am so glad that Bama's been feeling and eating better recently. Hoping and praying for much more of that to come! :bighug:
