? 12/10/25 Mikey AMPS numbers off the chart

About a week ago, Mikey’s numbers started going low at the PM dose , and I adjusted his dose.

Then he got diagnosed right about that time with 2nd stage kidney disease , with food change to Royal Canine Renal. I was going to slowly transition into the new diet but he stopped eating delectable and his Epigen 90 and Dr. Elseys

His numbers for the last 6 days are thru the roof. I was thinking it was just a bounce. Today I increased his dose. He is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping. But he did vomit his new food in the night

Could this be the renal food , as the high numbers seemed to coordinate the change. I am sending my doctor a note this morning.
Worried?
Thanks,
tom

Hi Tom, I’m sorry to hear of recent stuff with Mikey ❤️‍🩹

It could be a lot of things going on, change of diet, the new food is probably higher carb, skipped and reduced doses given lately can make the depot all wonky, too.

Maybe a lower phosphorous food is better for Mikey if the carbs in the renal food is too high. (You can check the food charts to see about the carb content).

I hope things calm down quickly! :bighug:

The vet of course knows that Mikey is diabetic but he said it is more important for him to find renal food and adjust the insulin. The renal food is low in phosphorous but carb high. Some of the wet food is lower in carbs, but Mikey does not like wet food. He tried Weruva and hated it.

It has been 4 hours and he is down to 366, which is better than 600 :) So confusing when he has 2 diseases. He is only stage 2 and his phosphorous is 5 which is normal ( but high)

His numbers are thru the roof and my anxiety is matching that

Tom, remind me again what Mikey's kidney lab numbers are?

I'm curious because we're also Stage 2 CKD, and it seems like there's mixed information out there about the renal diets at this stage. The problem is the restriction of the protein and the impact that has on other parts of their bodies. As well as the higher carbs for a diabetic. I would have to imagine more regulated glucose levels also helps take some load off the kidneys.

His creatine level is 2.3 and his phosphorous is 5. There is different information , so I am totally baffled .
He is not a happy camper because he does not enjoy his food and I am going poor trying to find something he will eat and his glucose numbers are thru the roof

The whole question is how to maintain both without sacrificing glucose levels and not stressing kidneys. And my boy has always been a picky eater. I feel like I am back to square 1

Sadly, I do have experience with CKD, and I am getting more of it right now with one of my sweet babies. What is the BUN, Creatinine and phosphorus levels for your cat? Urine specific gravity? Are your labs posted somewhere?

Right now, your priority should be to get those glucose numbers down to ease the burden on kidneys. So not skipping shots and keeping up with increases as recommended— that’s important. Also, phosphorus control in the food. If you tell my the blood phos level, I will have a better idea.

Okay. I see you gave these to Tim. With a phosphorus level of only five you’re not in really dangerous territory, yet, not enough to want the use of the renal foods, which do have their benefits and can be very good; however, at this stage, you probably do not need them. I would recommend feeding something lower in phosphorus, like one of the Weruva BFF pates or something else from this list that I will send you.

Ember broke into my kitty Zoey’s RC renal dry food once and it made her glucose go super high that evening. (It’s the one black number on my spreadsheet.) I’m not sure if it’s the same one you’re using (Zoey’s food is the “S” version) but it definitely made a very clear difference in Ember’s numbers.

At the time of his test a week ago:
Glucose 94
Bun 54
Creatine 2.3
bun creatine ratio 24.5
Phosphorus 5.1
Urine Specific Gravity 1.101
Thanks

S is a dry food so naturally higher in carbs

Yes, I have the A version. He was actually having some low numbers and now this. I may need to stop the renal food

Several of the renal wet foods are not horribly high in carbs, they’re more like medium carb foods so it’s possible to feed them and adjust insulin if needed. But your Mikey doesn’t need them yet — and some people choose not to feed them. It’s just something to research when the time comes. Almost all dry food is high carb anyway.
