Freckles is hanging onto those darn yellow numbers and still no nadir in sight. Looking at increasing tomorrow to 3.75 u as her numbers are pretty much flat throughout the cycle :banghead:. Is that the general consensus?

I don't think I like the vet's suggestion of reducing the number of smaller meals though out the day. I'm finding that she is very wide after eating and just wants to sleep - likely because she is too full. We tried reducing the number of meals to see if her numbers are food influenced, but doesn't look like it, so I think we'll go back to the meal schedule we had before (1 can ff at shot time, 1/2 can @+2, 1/2 can @+4 and then a 2-3 morsels of freeze dried chicken @+6, @+8).

Even though the yellow numbers and no apparent nadir are discouraging, I have to keep reminding myself that since starting the insulin, she has managed to put the weight back on, her dandruff has cleared up, and we don't have to be so militant in guarding the supper table anymore. Lots of positives have come about, now if we could just figure out the right dose for her, that would be great!

Hey Judy!

Freckles Nadir reminds me of Mowgli, typically at +4 but could be anywhere from +3 to +6, I don’t think he will bless you with a super dependable Nadir ( I could be wrong though!)

Personally, I agree, I think it’s time for an increase, it’s been 6 cycles on 3.5 and you haven’t seen anything lower than 200. Maybe someone with more experience will pop by to weigh in ;)

As for food I would say do what is best for you and Freckles. I think there is a formula around here on how many calories a cat needs to maintain weight, maybe that could help you decide how much to feed. @MrWorfMen's Mom I think I saw you reference that formula ... do you happen to know it?

It’s so exciting that you’re noticing improvements in weight, skin, and appetite since starting treatment, those are the most important things that come out of treatment. I was most excited when mowgli stopped drinking and peeing insane amounts! You’re doing awesome!!

The formula for caloric needs is 13.6 X ideal weight in lbs. +70. You can shave off or add on calories based on whether kitty is a couch potato or hyperactive or needs to lose or gain weight.

Thanks Linda - it's good for me to double check my calorie numbers. So, looking at the can of FF which in Canada is 85 gm and comparing that to Dr. Lisa's food chart (https://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf), the size of the can for the chart is 5.5 oz. 85 gm is only 3 oz so is the US FF can almost double the size that we have in Canada? Something isn't lining up because on the actual 85 gm can of FF it states 82 kcal/can, yet the 5.5 oz can (156 gm), which is double the size that we have in Canada, is basically the same caloric number?

I think that is an omission and the different can size didn't get noted. The cans in the US according to Petsmart are 3 oz. so same size as here. I've looked up FF before I knew about Dr. Lisa and the calories for the pates were somewhere around 80 to 100 calories per can depending on flavour. :)

Your food plan looks fine. Onward and upward with the dose. One day Freckles will give up her fondness for yellow.
