I came home for the afternoon because I have to take my cat with stomach cancer (Callie) to the vet this afternoon. She's not doing very well and it may be time to help her cross. At least I don't have to worry about Furball going too low right now.

Furball is in a good mood this evening. She's finally coming down.

Since Callie is doing better today, and still eating, I am still treating her symptoms for now. The stomch cancer has caused an abcess to form on her belly. She basically has an open wound that I am supposed to keep clean. The vet said to rinse it with water to clean out the pus every day. She said to use the shower head. Does anyone have any advice on treating a wound? It seems like I should be doing more.

The vet gave her an A/B and it seems to be helping. She was feeling bad yesterday. She still may not have much time left. I am going to see how things go with keeping the would clean the next couple of days and see how she feels.

Wish I had some answers for your wound care questions. I have something here my vet gave me a while ago for a slight skin scrap on Boomer. An organic salve called Buck Mountain Wound Balm for Animals: Yellow Herb, Burdock Root, and Echinacea Root. Also used in on a goat I fostered last year who came with open wounds on his lower legs. Worked on the two I tried it with, but know really nothing about it.

(((Carla))) Sorry to hear that Callie's time may be near. I've used warm wet compresses on cat wounds before, to help express the pus.

Be good Furball, a nice blue surf would be perfect for tonight.
 
Do not use hydrogen peroxide, nor alcohol. It makes it harder for skin to heal.

Gentle warm water will rinse out the pus.

Pat dry with sterile gauze.
Optional, if OK with vet, use an antibiotic ointment. The vet may want the wound to stay dryer and not put something on it which would keep it more moist.

Protect it with a bandage wrap and gauze padding if necessary.

I'm sorry to hear about Callie and hope that she is not in pain.
With regard to wound cleaning, I use Sterile Saline Wound Wash. It comes in a spray can and you can buy it in any pharmacy. It's a very gentle 0.9% sodium chloride solution, does not burn or sting, painlessly removes debris and dirt, and the can sprays at any angle. If you need to bandage, use sterile gauze pads or wraps.
