Hello LL

Ok, so I *was* going to tell a half-funny, half-awww sort of story about the crazy thunderstorm we had last night, that included lightning that sounded like someone tearing up a sky made of silk and thunder that made the windows judder and shake so much that they actually slid open - which is a huge deal for us down here because unlike Jo'burg and Pretoria, Cape Town gets hardly *any* thunderstorms, let alone insane ones like this one. I *was* going to relate how scared poor Henry was and how he eventually sat on the bed and peed this enormous puddle onto the sheets, the duvet and - of course - my foot. After that I was going to describe the getting-up-and-showering-and-remaking-the-bed antics, which included a couple of episodes of slapstick comedy tripping over bed linens and so forth, and how I lay down on the ground next to Henry for ages to help him calm down, which he ultimately did.

Instead, I'll tell you that DH forgot who he was married to - ME, the woman who *hates* sleeping in because it makes her feel like she's wasting the day; the woman who promised to watch LL in the morning; and lastly, the woman who tends to get really bloody pissed off when her husband turns of her alarm and messes with her day as well as her ability to keep her promises. (He turned the alarm off because he thought I should have some extra sleep, since we missed quite a bit due to Henry's little mishap. I know that. But then, he knows *me*, too. I was NOT amused.)

Ok. Moving away from the efforts to find other d-words as an alternative to "DH = *Darling* Husband" and moving instead towards Karre's 9th OTJ Day condo and the feedback I couldn't respond to anymore last night.

MARJE, you wrote: "I wonder if you might see some better results if you did feed him small meals throughout the day. One would think that if he is free feeding, he's eating small meals throughout the day but some cats are not grazers. If I put all of Tobey's food down at one time, he would free feed himself into a food coma. It's worth a shot to see if feeding every few hours helps the pancreas a bit."

--- I wonder that too. We had decided yesterday to try that as of today. DH did remember to offer Karre food at test-time this morning, but Karre only wanted a TSP full (LC FF as always). He offered Karre food again at (+2) and Karre ate another (heaped) TSP. Karre DOES and always has been a very good grazer - he does not over-eat, he comes in every 3-4 hours *anyway* to have a snack, and he'll have between 1 and 3 TSP at a time (amounting to about one to two 3-oz cans per day, most days). What I think I'll do is *watch* for Karre every 3-4 hours, and if he doesn't come in like he normally does and eats, I will go find him and feed.

JILL, you wrote: "I like Marje's idea to try feeding every 4 hours to see if Karre brings himself down each time. Don't do it all night. Just when you're up. If that doesn't bring those blue numbers down we could revisit the 0.1u dose, but I have a feeling it won't be necessary."

--- Will do, Jill. I do okay on sleep-testing, and I was thinking about maybe getting a mini-curve on a couple of OTJ-nights, just to have some data on that. Am I being silly? And thank you thank you for saying you think Karre *won't* have to go back to 0.1u - that's a very comforting thought.

DAPHNE, you wrote: "I add about 1tsp. of water to her meals and set the auto feeders to go off every 2 hrs. or so. Sometimes I wonder myself, if that is too many mini meals, but she is a very hungry kitty all the time, no matter what her BGs are [...]."

--- The 2-hourly rhythm sort of happened this morning, because Karre didn't want to eat an actual "meal" in terms of portion size, so DH fed him again 2 hours after AMBG time. Karre's normal rhythm is every 3-4 hours of free-feeding, which thankfully is what he should be doing and what we'll reinforce by feeding if and when he doesn't come to eat on his own. Thanks for your input - and congratulations on over a month of OTJ! Hopefully we'll see you at the Falls soon!

Your support and advice is and always has been invaluable, and I know we would never have made it back into an OTJ-Trial without it, and without all of you. (Please forgive my rant earlier - I will try to make up for it with some more funny pictures later.) We're grateful to all of you every day for being there for us. Thank you so, so much.

Happy Caturday!
Jane (with apologies and wet-noodle-anticipation from DH Jack).

Oh my I was up a lot last night but my night was not near as fun filled as yours it sounds  poor Henry I have a cat here named Voodoo who is terrified of storms but I have to say I have never had that happen and on to wishing Karre Happy Happy Day 10 almost to the falls again whoo hooo

So sorry you had a crazy night. Poor Henry. Don't worry about the rant. That's what we're here for for, to help each other, even if it is just to let off some steam. Hope you have a good day today, even with the late start. I hate having to go back to sleep, but sometimes we need the extra rest.

Happy Day 10 to you and Karre. dancing_cat dancing_cat dancing_cat Almost there.

Thanks, Lisa! Hopefully we'll be partying soon!

Here are the Day 10 of OTJ numbers so far - we're monitoring more closely again to see if the reinforced 3-hourly to 4-hourly feeding routine makes a difference:

AMBG 5.7/103 --- Fed 1 TSP (all food is loc-carb Fancy Feast).
(+2) 5.0/90 --- Fed 1 heaped TSP because his "breakfast" was smaller than he normally comes and eats.
(+4) 5.2/94 --- Ate 2.5 TSP.

So far, a nice surf in the green. Yesterday, he bobbled up into the blue at (+6) and surfed thereabouts. Let's hope he stays green today.
Jane

Thanks for the visit and the support, Carla!

Mid-Cycle Update:
AMBG 5.7/103 --- Fed 1 TSP (all food is loc-carb Fancy Feast).
(+2) 5.0/90 --- Fed 1 heaped TSP because his "breakfast" was smaller than he normally comes and eats.
(+4) 5.2/94 --- Ate 2.5 TSP.
(+6) 5.8/104 --- Ate half a can FF. *Almost* stayed green.

We'll keep watching this cycle, and tomorrow's. Hopefully by then the feeding routine will have made a difference.

i'd never call anyone silly for wanting to collect more data. do i think it's necessary to do a mini-curve at night? no, but if you're seeking more information... go for it! just don't wake me while you're doing it!

Wow what a night! I hope today and tonight is quieter for all of you. I see Karre has been dabbling in the low blue numbers and I hope he settles himself into a beneficial feeding routine. Glad Karre can continue OTJ!
If you think a pm curve would give you useful insight and it wont unduly deplete you, I dont see how it would hurt.
I have been wondering who eats how much during the night, but I dont know how to set up some kind of kitty cam surveillance on the food area.

  KARRE.... THINK GREEN !!

Tucker had me worried yesterday too. I made sure he had food available all day long, and it seemed to help again. Good luck today. Karre will be green!!!

Congratulations to Karre and Jane on OTJ Day 10
Hi Jane,
Awww....poor Henry! Is he doing okay now! I can imagine how the thunder and lightening must have scared him if it's a rarity there in your area. The same would happen here, too, as we rarely get thunder and lightening. Your DH is so sweet wanting you to get more rest, but I understand with not messing with the schedule. :-D I stick to the same time getting up early. It messes up my whole day to sleep in, too! Have a wonderful day.

I wonder since we don't know Karre's normal bg, is it possible that it is normally high (around 90-100) and the larger meals he had just pushed him up temporarily? He is still within the normal range (under 120). If he's like Racci his bg depends a lot on how much he eats.

Poor little Henry. We get storms almost every day at this time of year and Racci is still scared of them. Sorry you had such a screwed up night. I wound up only sleeping 2.5 hours because of Racci's asthma so know how those nights mess with your day! I know I'll be napping today. :-|

I hope Karre turns green for you.

Hugs,
Melanie & Racci

HAPPY DAY 10 KARRE!!!!

Poor Henry! We have that same kind of thunderstorm during the summer months in Florida....sometimes they occur daily! My Shadow hears the approachiing thunder long before i am aware of it and he slithers into my closet. He is terrified of the storms! I always feel so awful for him....while Raja is never bothered in the slightest! We have lightning shows that are spectacular and thunder that almost break your eardrums. A big "To-do" and then the skies clear and the sun comes out as if nothing has happened! Weird place!
I can empathize with your experience....one feels so helpless ~ not being able to do anything to soothe our frightened kitties....Hugs!

UPDATE on DAY 10:
AMBG 5.7/103 --- Fed 1 TSP (all food is loc-carb Fancy Feast).
(+2) 5.0/90 --- Fed 1 heaped TSP because his "breakfast" was smaller than he normally comes and eats.
(+4) 5.2/94 --- Ate 2.5 TSP.
(+6) 5.8/104 --- Ate half a can FF. *Almost* stayed green.
(+8) 6.1/110 --- Damn. Grrr. Want the all-green Karre-Cycle back!
(+10) 5.4/97 --- Even if it's only by a hair. Makes me feel better.

Leslie --- I *love* the idea of a kitty surveillance camera! Go ahead and invent one and have it patented

Helen --- Yes, he certainly keeps us on our toes. Sienne was saying the other day how she'd be holding her breath at each tes. That pretty much says it!

Chris --- Sorry Tucker had you worried too, but look at him go! Beautiful Day 11 for you both!

Ann --- Yes, Henry is fine now, thanks for asking! The thunder/lightning flared up this morning once more, but since then, he's calmed down and so has the weather (though we did have some freak HAIL!!) He was curled up in a tubchair all afternoon ;-)

Melanie --- Oh no, I'm so sorry Racci's asthma was so bad and you lost so much sleep! Good thoughts on Karre's eating habits, too. Today went fairly well - I hope the monitored feeding routine will help keep him just a tad lower than he has been. I think you're right that his normal average BG is higher now too.

Pat --- Aww, poor Shadow! Yes, it's so awful to see them scared and not being able to just "switch off" the storm!

Thank you all for the support! We'll still post the PMBG, but I think I'll be off-board until then and afterwards, barring anything emergent. Happy cycling everyone!
Jane

Pinky went to the vet for some blood work two days ago, much to the distress of all involved, and his BG result was 8.0/144! nailbite_smile :o Somewhat worrisome. One can only hope that it was stress-induced. Karre's numbers look pretty nice!

Pinkerton would also like Henry to know that he sends his sympathies regarding the noises. The smoke alarm in our house has taken to sending out very loud and jarring noises at all hours of the day and night, and Pinky might very well pee on the bed if he were not cowering under it!

Congrats on Day Ten!
