Good Morning LL! ~O) ~O) ~O)

Prayers, support, & hugs to Carl for the loss of his beloved Bob. :YMHUG: Prayers, & healing vines out to anyone else in need today.

It's a cold day here (Central California cold, that is) on the ranch, but sunny, & our DGS's 4th B-day! We're having a Buzz Lightyear / Toy Story birthday party at their house later this afternoon. (Tigger is very happy the Birthday Party is NOT AT OUR HOUSE today! )

We had some blue in last night's numbers, the first in 10 days - hope we're entering into a new cycle for Tigger (paws crossed)

:?: Spankey ripped a 1"strip of fur on his shoulder down to the tissue last week. No abscess yet, & I've been putting Panalog ointment on it, but he licks it off shortly after it goes on. Still, it's healing, but twice now, as soon as I stop the Panalog, he starts scratching till it's bloody & we start all over again. I've tried large bandaids, tape, & baby t-shirts - no good. I'm concerned about a collar if he's unattended. Any suggestions for stopping the scratching??? Thanks for any advice!

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +2/191 Scratching Question

there's a soft collar that's not as offensive as the hard plastic lampshades - i wonder if that would be sufficient.

have you tried neosporin with pain relief? i used it daily on punkin's ears and i tried it on myself when he had scratched me. the stuff is miraculous in how it takes out the owie. the instructions say to slather it on, but i think i would do that, keep him from licking it for at least 20 minutes, and then wipe off most of the excess before i left him to his own devices. eating a bunch of neosporin might give him diarrhea.

the second part of this, however, is figuring out what made him do that in the first place. is something going on with his skin that's unbearably itchy? have you changed his food? we had a dog that ate holes in herself from itching and when we switched her to a hypoallergenic food (recommended by a locally owned pet store) it stopped. we'd treated her with a bunch of things for years first and no one had suggested it might be the food.

just a thought.

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +2/191 Scratching Question

Poor Spankey! I think the Neosporin is a good idea and depending on just where it is something like an infant T-shirt may help to keep it covered if he will keep it on. They also make Thunder Shirts for cats now, if that would cover the spot it would be harder for him to get off.

Have fun at the party.

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +2/191 Scratching Question

Thanks Julie & Ann, those are both great ideas.

Julie, I have neosporin cream with pain relief & I'll try that now. I have a felt collar, but he really struggles with it. I put the ointment on before he eats AM & PM, so that helps, but for those interim treatments I definitely need help. I'll try the collar again, but am not very optimistic...

Re. the scratching - it's just where the ow-ie is. I think as it heals & scabs over, I put less antibiotic cream on it, so it's more dry & then more scratchy. When I keep it oiled up with the Panalog he leaves it alone (except for licking it off).

Maybe I should just keep it slathered up - but can it still scab & fully heal if it's 'wet / oily'?

Ann, the Thunder t-shirt is a great idea - it looks like the collar area would keep the shoulder area covered where infant t-shirts don't. Just have to figure out what size is best for a 14# cat.

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +2/191 +4/99 Scratching Question

We got Green!!!   Hope Tigger isn't trying to interfere with B-day party plans later this afternoon...... Are cats vengeful???

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +2/191 +4/99 Scratching Question

WOOT WOOT on that green! Way to go Tigger.   How about some nice surfing there now? Bean's got plans.

Umm, cat's vengeful? Of course!    Just tell him DGS will NOT be making an appearance.

Good luck on the itching, I've no experience with that that doesn't involve collars.

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +2/191 +4/99 Scratching Question

i found the pain relief from the neosporin lasted a really long time. i don't remember exactly, but i want to say it was at least a day.

yes, i think it can still heal if it's oily but not wet with water. you could switch to something like a bit of straight coconut oil if you don't think you need antibiotic or pain relief at this point. of course, too much greasy anything will give a cat diarrhea too.

hehe i don't know about vengeful, but definitely psychic. perhaps he doesn't want you to leave.

WTG Tigger   Surf safely!

Have fun at the birthday party- 4 year olds are such fun :-D

Hope the Neosporin helps with Spankey's ouchie cat_pet_icon

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +4/99 +7/89 Help!! Pre-empt with Fo

Thanks, Julie - The neosporin is working fine, & I think the coconut oil is a great idea - I'll try it at night when I get home - I'd rather have him eat coconut oil anyway!

Thanks, Jane, but I think Tigger's trying to jinx me!

:?: I have to leave in 40 min. & Tigger's going lower. He's pretty flat, but he can drop v. quickly when he wants to. He just got into Simon's food - 3% + pumpkin for poops, but I don't think he ate much. I just tested him & he's at +7/89 - down from +6/105. I'll be gone for 3.5 hours, till PMPS @ DGS B-day party & DD will never forgive me if I 'choose' Tigger over DGS. Should I feed him his normal 5% or 9% or HC at this point? nailbite_smile

Thank you for your input!!!!!

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +4/99 +7/89 Help!! Pre-empt with Fo

Well that answers the question about vengeful or not.

OK, here's what I'd do. Tigger just got LC and you've got to leave in 40 minutes. I'd test 30 minutes after he had that LC and see what impact it had on him. Most of the time, Tigger doesn't drop low late. If that LC kept him steady or gave him a bit of a rise, I'd stick to LC at this point. If he dropped a bit, I'd move to 9% for safety. This is after his "typical" nadir so normally you wouldn't want HC at this point, but of course nadirs can move. He is pretty much surfing along right now as 89 is within 10%ish of 99.

If you leave food out, can you leave it so only Tigger gets it? Of course it means you won't be lifting food 2 hours before PMPS.

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +4/99 +7/89 Help!! Pre-empt with Fo

Oh, thanks, Wendy, you're a lifesaver (again)! Yeah - is this Tigger's total revenge or what?!!!!!

I have a feeder, but it just arrived, so we haven't used it. If I leave food out, Tigger will eat it all now (Piggy Tiggy)

That all makes sense. I think today Tigger is dropping off a bounce - the few v. times he's had a lower PMPS than his +10, (like 40 points) we've gone pretty low at PM +2 or 3.

Sheesh - I sure hate to blow a good surf, but I don't want to come home to a hypo, either!

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +4/99 +7/89 Help!! Pre-empt with Fo

I have a cat on a "see-food" diet too - see it, eat it. If he's steady at the next test, then a generous helping of LC.

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +4/99 +7/89 Help!! Pre-empt with Fo

OK< Tigger's at 105, so I'm going to feed him a standard 5% breffis (I forgot his AM +#) & re-check in 10 min, just before we leave. If he's still higher I'll leave it - if he's holding I'll add some 9%.

Thanks, again, Wendy! I know you have experience here as Neko's still the Queen of Bounce!

Re: 11/9 Tigger AMPS/338 +4/99 +7/89 Help!! Pre-empt with Fo

Leaving & back down to 97, so I gave him 2T 9% & I'll try & leave a little early - keep paws crossed for us!!!

Thanks, ALL!

Came home to a PMPS pf 342 - about normal for Tigger. Thanks Wendy for saving my bacon on that. I was hoping Tigger would gradually come back up on his own, & just hated to break such a lovely level run - we have soooo few of those (in the right colors, that is)

We had a fun time at the B-day party - it was Toy Story themed, with balloons & cake & all. My favorite was the chocolate peanut butter chunk ice cream - mmmmm! I had 2 servings - which is why we don't keep that stuff at our house!!!

Glad you had a fun time. What brand of ice cream is that? I'd love that combo. But just as well not to have any here either.

Tigger probably would have been safe with regular LC, but better safe than sorry. Paws crossed he'll get back soon to surfing.

Oh, Wendy, that ice cream was SOOOOO GOOD!!! I'll call & ask my daughter the name again tomorrow - my menopausal brain is having a hard time remembering the brand - Dreyers Grand (Something) chocolate peanut butter chunk or peanut butter chocolate. It was nice & smooth, not too sweet, with chunks of Reese's cups - oh, I'm starting to drool!

Glad the party was fun....sounds like delish ice cream.

Poor Spanky! I hope you find something that works.

It didn't sound to me like you gave any HC to pull up his numbers today. I think he can probably use some more insulin, don't you? He barely skimmed green......
