11-9-11 Jeddie update

His numbers have been high and flat so I have been raising his dose. Again. I am not even sure that is the right thing to do. Last March he had decent numbers on .6u to .7u with a few rebound swings. But then he had just as nice numbers in early Sept. on .3u. However, he was also having some food allergies issues then.

All the cats have fleas. I think they got them from the house in MI where I take them for vacation 2-3 times a year. There is evidence that mice have gotten into the living areas from the basement, so that is most likely the cause. Now I have to treat them with something and clean all the bedding and vacuum everywhere (move furniture and get under it if they have slept under it, like my bed, etc.). I am not sure I want to use Frontline again since it is so toxic, but I don't think natural treatments work and they all have essential oils in them that I have read are bad for cats. Sigh.

He has also taken to peeing on the rug in my second bedroom. He started doing that when he was having the severe diarrhea from the food allergy, but he still does it about once every week or two. Now sure what to do about that other than clean up after him. I put a heavy tarp under the rug so it can't damage the floor or sub floor. It's a cheap rug (Ikea $20) so I don't mind throwing it out when I have to, but I need a rug in there and he would probably pee on the replacement.... I tried uping his prozac dose from 1/4 tab sid to alternating 1/4 tab and 1/2 tab, but he started acting a little freaked so I cut back again. He is on prozac for out of control inappropriate peeing and OCD symptoms from when I got him two years ago. It made a huge difference. Stopped the peeing entirely for almost a year and made him less anxious.

Personally I love Advantage for Fleas, kills those little suckers in nothing flat...When I got Musette home she was covered in them. We use the regular Avantage on most of the kids here, as I get the large dog size and divide it up for the cats. But I have a couple that are impossible to give pills or ear mite meds and Musette was one of those when she first arrived, I don't remember the name of it now, but the vet gave her a treatment of the newer Advantage that also takes care of fleas, ear mites and worms...it also worked like a charm.

I also know Musette's numbers were all over the place while she had fleas because of the stress of being so itchy.

Mel, Maxwell, Musette & The Fur Gang.

I agree with Mel that Jeddie's numbers could be from the flea irritation.

What is wrong with frontline? I use it, never had a problem. OTC stuff, no freakin' way. I used a Hartz brand one time on 2 cats and I am surprised it didn't kill one of them. Horrible vomiting after licking it and weird behavior afterwards like they could not get away from it. I washed it off both of them as best I could. I was so upset by it I wrote Hartz a letter and got an apology and a refund. After that I always bought Frontline from vet, but have used Advantage also. Both worked equally well and were not irritating, beyond some skin twitching.

Oh Jeddie! Wassup with the peeing???
I use pee pads under my rugs/litter boxes. Tack them to the wall where Mr. high pee goes. The hartz ones from big lots 50 for 10$ they are very, very absorbant. Mickey pees really big.

Hope he is feeling better soon!

Frontline is bad??!!! That figures, I just bought it and put it on everyone!
I tried advantage and advantage II, and still have fleas.

Frontline works great, but it is a pesticide.

In a perfect world I would not want to put that on my cats, but I have used it and not had any ill effects. It sure beats having fleas in the house. I'm going to get either FL or Advantage, but I have a couple of FL from last year so I want to use those up I guess.

J was 143 last night and 240-something this morning. I guess I will hold him at .5u until after I can treat them and clean my condo really well. When I think of all the places they sleep that I have to either wash blankets and/or vacuum around - ugh. But it has to be done.

here we go again...

Jeddie was 130 last night and 110 this am  after 5 days on this dose (.5u). I didn't get anything near these numbers on .4u for 12 days. I had to reduce his dose because I was leaving just after his shot for 9 hrs. Tonight he was 232.

He did have numbers like this a couple of months ago on a lower dose. Two+ years and I have yet to figure this guy out.

Sheila, why not stick with the .5U? I understand you were leaving, but you have to trust in the Levemir at some point. Just leave food out, he'll be fine. I hope he has those kinds of numbers again soon when you can be there to get some midcycle tests and see for yourself that it's working well at .5U.

They aren't usually going to drop as hard from a 100 as they may from a 200 when the dose is right.

Because I am not sure I have the data that he won't drop and Beau DID drop - I simply can't trust lev without the data. If I had been home, I would have shot .5u and tested. IF I have shot a full dose on a low number before with J, I have forgotten and I didn't have the time to look up his numbers.

I know everyone says/said "shoot low to stay low", but I could never do that with Beau - although I did try a few times and he dropped into the 30s. Sure, he was fine at those numbers, but I really don't feel comfortable with it. My experience with Beau has colored how I treat Jeddie and even though I know ECID and he is probably going to react more like the majority of cats, I have to have that proven to me.

I shot .5u tonight, so he should be back to full "shed" in a day or so.

I get it. Experience is the best teacher.

Just wondering, has Jeddie ever gone that low? I don't remember. By that low I mean 30s. I don't mean that anyone should force their cat that low in order to witness what happens, but those times Gandalf had below 40 taught me that he would be OK if it did happen.

As you're saying, it comes down to experience.

Yeah, he has been in the 30s a few times. I think he just acts really hungry and maybe a little anxious.

I did look over his SS for this year to see if I shot full doses on lows PSs. Sometimes I did and sometimes I didn't. However, on the times that I did shoot a full dose (full doses at the times it happened ranged from .3u to .7u and PS from low 80s to 120) sometimes he held steady or climbed a bit, but other times he sagged lower (50s). All of the 30-40s were off of higher PS, or even reduced doses on low PS - so no real pattern that I can discern and, therefore, no certainty that he wouldn't have a low if I shot a full dose on a low PS... still collecting data on this guy.
