AMPS 163

Kind of a poopy start, but he'll bring it down. He has a bit of dander (I think it's just from the weather changes, not dandruff from allergies or something) I see that fish oil or Omega 3's are good for the skin. Are they ok for diabetics? Seems like it should be ok. I'm up for suggestions...

Re: 11/8 Buster AMPS 163 - fish oil for dander?

I hope Buster slides down today. I don't know anything about the fish oil. I love the dancing kitty. TGIF.

Re: 11/8 Buster AMPS 163 - fish oil for dander?

I found this lil blurb....
One increasingly effective supplement helpful in treating cat diabetes is fish oil. It is a source of omega 3 fatty acids, and fish oil may increase insulin sensitivity. A feline dose is one regular strength capsule per 10 lbs of body weight given once daily. This equates to 1000mg of fish oil daily.

Any truth to increased insulin sensitivity?

i haven't used it, but i've heard a number of people say that they give their cats fish oil. i think they squeeze the capsule out on the food. i would feel comfortable trying it.

as far as the insulin sensitivity goes, i haven't heard that. might be something to just be attentive for when you try it.

Fish oil is absolutely great for diabetic cats. It helps to keep their triglyceride levels down. The one Rhiannon linked is the one my vet (who is a nutritionist) recommended and Gracie is on. It's really, really good. Just be sure you dose him exactly according to the instructions because you CAN give too much fish oil and more (e.g. more than what they should get for their weight) is not better.

Neko gets fish oil, a brand called Ascenta. Their website has some links to research including some on glucose control for obese cats. Neko is getting it for arthritis - note that both this and the Nordic Naturals use fish from small fishes (not salmon). Both are a liquid - not capsules.
