Hi everyone, just checking in today.
I'm afraid I can't link my condo as having probs with the iPad I am using while away from home. Also can't update the spreadsheet but will see that it gets done this pm by my daughter.
Those how very kindly helped me over the last few days will remember that I am away this week and my husband and daughter are standing in for me in a limited capacity, so monitoring will not be so freq and shooting low numbers not an option.
Well to update you.
R ed has been given no insulin since sat 11/3 pm
Some of the bg are on the spreadsheet the rest are, 11/5 +8 =76
11/5 pmbg = 88
11/6 ambg = 76
I think these levels are amazing. Does this mean he is producing his own insulin???
Or could there be another explanation?
These are normal limit levels are they?
I'm so excited, can't wait to hear from you all.
Thanks,
Kath

Wow that was fast. Yes these are great numbers. I would keep holding off and testing and see if he can sustain it.

How are his symptoms ie eating drinking peeing etc?

Re: 11/6 red no insulin 2days ambg 76 is red producing his o

Hi Wendy,
He is great! He is eating well, he lost 1.5kg initially was 6.5kg. Although could have done with loosing the 1st 1/2kg the rest made him too skinny. After 1week he had regained 0.2 kg, I'll get my husband to get him weighed tomorrow. Wow that will be two weeks after starting lantus. This stuff really does work!!! Can you believe my 1st vet told me to have him put down because I couldn't afford the $400 NZ they wanted to do the initial curves.
He is like a 10 year old kitten! Gone is the obsession over food, at your feet every time you go into the kitchen and the worse thing was he was jumping on the kitchen work bench all the time. I was telling him off but now I know he prob wanted the attention as he wasn't feeling great. He is peeing fine, the litter tray is no longer a swimming pool as is was initially.
I will happily shout from the rooftops about this in new Zealand. Let's hope he stays steady. Fingers crossed.
How long do his numbers have to remain at this level for to say he is in remission? What is your term for that?
Biggest thing is although I have only been speaking with you all for less than 2weeks i have received such amazing, kind, generous thoughtful care. I can't believe how wonderful you all are xxx

Hi Kath, this is great news about Red! I really like your description of how he is feeling and behaving. That is wonderful. The term we use here is OTJ (off the juice, ie. insulin). Normally we do what is called an OTJ trial, where the cat goes two weeks without insulin, just to make sure. You continue to test at his normal shot time (AM and PM) to ensure he is in good numbers.

Hi wendy (in north Vancouver)
We have spent some lovely times in Vancouver and fort st James/prince George with family. Even spent our honeymoon skiing in near fort st James! Is that far from you?
We will keep up the testing.
Thanks

These are beautifully normal numbers. There's a good chance that Red's pancreas is working. Please let DH and DD know if they see a blue number, to give Red a bit of food and test about 3 hours later. If the food helps to stimulate Red's pancreas to produce it's own insulin and bring numbers down, you'll know that he's producing his own insulin.

Great news, Kath! Let's see how he continues to do while you are gone :-D

Hi Kath-
One orange dude to another confirms that this is pretty cool news. And you aren't even home for it!!! Definitely feels a bit better knowing you aren't home to test as much. And it takes some of the pressure of DH and DD to keep up on testing.

I don't think you posted on 11/5/12. Here is the last condo link that I found on 11/4.

Great news! Let the TRIAL begin!!!!

WOOT! Great News!!

Re: 11/6 red no insulin 2days ambg 76 is red producing his o

Hi Kath, paws crossed here for a successful trial. To answer your questions above, Fort St. James is over 900 km from us. We live at the base of the mountains just north of Vancouver. However, we spent part of our honeymoon in New Zealand, a week each in North and South Islands. A lot of the South Island sure reminded us of home. It's beautiful. Where in NZ are you located?

Re: 11/6 red no insulin 2days ambg 76 is red producing his o

Wendy, we are on the north shore just over the bridge in Auckland. A very pretty spot especially with summer well on its way. We have been here just 3years and have not yet got down to the south island. We hope to soon. There will certainly be more chance of a holiday if red keeps his numbers good! My cousins who live in fort st James have a gran who is 94, they call her granny 6 pack, and she drives from Vancouver to their place at least once a year! You breed them tough. I have been up grouse mountain and been face to face with one of your bears at whistler.
I didn't really realise how much it had effected him until I look back and see the difference in his personality now. We only got red and his very beautiful blue tortie sister, misty in march this year when their owners decided they couldn't keep them. Strange how cats worm their way into your affections so quickly and misty certainly is devoted to her brother, who else could she use as a pillow and lick all day?
So it is not only me, my husband and 4 kids, but misty as well who need to say thank you to you all x
