Grace is home. Getting small drops of insulin to help support her pancreas. Was sent home with SubQs, metronidazole, Metoclopramide, Florentero (probiotic). Continue Pepcid AC. Also continue ASA and Fortekor (for her HCM). Vet decided against pain meds because Grace does not seem to be in pain, and because of the heart problems and asthma.

She is no longer vomiting, but is inappetant. Eats very small amounts - maybe about 1/2 can of FF equivalent a day. Blood ketones very slightly up at 0.4 - still a good number.

Hollis is not good at pilling her - becomes a very very stressful situation for both of them, and there are a LOT of pills to be given. She did start crushing them in food, but I am afraid that she is developing food avoidance because of that, and is not getting full doses. Spoke to her again about "pilling without apology" (she apologizes for ages before pilling, which I have assured her simply stresses Grace out more!) Have also cautioned her that it takes a long time to recover, and relapses will occur if she does not get the meds in.

Wish us luck!

Hang in there!

You may find that some of the pills can be dissolved in an oral syringe with a bit of water, then squirted in, rather than mixing it with food and possibly causing food aversions. This also prevents a pill from getting stuck partway down the esophagus where it might cause irritation. If taste is part of the problem, putting in a smidge of pureed food and shaking well may mask the pills somewhat.

Another trick, for small pills, is to coat them with vegetable oil or butter, then pop them in. This is good for the really nasty tasting ones (ex. Baytril makes some cats slime you with the excess salivation after tasting it), as it keeps the pill from dissolving in the cat's mouth.

i'm sorry to hear grace is still feeling poorly and hollis is having a hard time pilling her.
when i was having a hard time pilling alex, choy-foong suggested i explain what i was doing to alex and that she was to swallow, not chew. we start with a tiny piece of freeze dried chicken, followed by the pill, then another very small piece of freeze dried chicken. last, but not least... a chaser of 6ml water. placing the pill as far back in her mouth as i possibly could helped a lot.

hope grace feels better soon...
