NOTE: Pumbaa's SS is in reverse order with the most current data at the top.

Pumbaa was doing really great until his 5th cycle at 2.50U, where he jumped up from an AMPS of 142 to 301 at +7. Not a huge swing, but, considering he's been relatively flat lately, that was something to take notice of.

I find it interesting that Pumbaa hasn't hit greens yet during the first 5 cycles at 2.50U. (I know I'm jinxing myself by typing that.) *LOL* I'm praying that he comes down gently from that 301, and that he doesn't swing in the other direction tonight and drop down to below 50. I know he sometimes emulates a SuperBall with his numbers, and that is what I would like to control, if I can, in any way.

Sheila, I thought about decreasing Pumbaa's dose tonight by a drop to help stop the swing, but I didn't think that the 276 PMPS was low enough to not still require the full 2.50U dose. Did I do right?

Life goes on. One of my mom's cats (Freydo, the skinny one who hates pills), still isn't eating right and did a huge "Excorsist" projectile barf today, even though he hadn't eaten since last night. I finally got him to eat some more baby food off my finger tonight, and did manage to get 1/2 tablet of Cerenia down him. Mom is going to try and get him into the vet again tomorrow. Even though his test results and cursory exam of a week ago were fine, I don't think they checked his mouth for dental problems, or for any problems that would be causing him to have a hard time swallowing. I gave him water via his mouth and a syringe tonight, and he spit a lot of it out. Hence, I think he's having problems swallowing for some reason. Freydo hid under my mom's bed all day today, until I got there and pulled him out. After he got his pill and ate some baby food, he was more social, once again, and sat on my mom's lap while I tortured him further by forcing water into his mouth, drops at a time. :(

No, tonight's PS was not low enough to do a decrease. I think this could still be NDW, and no real deep swing has gotten started, but if it has, tomorrow's AM PS will probably be lower and then you could reduce a smidgen.

Has Freydo been checked for hyperT? That can cause vomiting. Not sure about the swallowing being an issue because I don't think that would cause vomiting, but it is something to check. Could he have pancreatitis? His symptoms and the hiding are common with it. Do you know about triaditis? It's IBD, ptitis and liver inflammation all at the same time. Have you ever checked these guys' BG?

Pumbaa did drop down to 58 @ PM +6.75, and was at 131 for his AMPS this morning, so I shaved a drop off of his 2.50U dose.

It's all my fault, of course, for typing that it was interesting that he hadn't hit any greens yet on the 2.50U dose. Hahahahaha! (Yes, I did the "nap on the sofa" routine so I could test him near his PM +8.)

Sheila, I didn't take Freydo to the vet 2 weeks ago, but I was told that they ran a full blood panel looking for anything that could have been causing his barfing and weight loss. To me, that would include hyper thyroidism, FD, etc. I'll have to make time this afternoon to go to the vet with my mom, since she never writes anything down. :( I, personally, haven't checked my mom's cats BG levels, but they've both had blood work done at the vet's recently, due to the barfing, and I do know that Theo showed no signs of FD. I don't know about the pancreatitis or triaditis. I'll ask about those at the vet today.

That 58 doesn't surprise me - the way he has been throwing those at you "out of no where" lately. This is where I think "taking the edge off" the dose will help. My thinking is that if the drop isn't quiet as low then the swing back up won't be quiet as high.

The hyperT is part of a "Senior Panel", so may not be included in a regular "full" blood panel (it costs more - Cami's was $60 recently).

Another thing to ask them about is dehydration. Once they go off their food and take in less water, they get dehydrated and that by itself can cause nausea - sort of gets out of control and then things like pancreatitis seem to be able to take hold. SubQ fluids are a common part of p-titis treatment.

This sort of thing can be so difficult to figure out. A lot of times there is no clear sign in the lab work. I have begun to suspect diet more and more with this sort of thing. Poor diet combined with aging - they just can't overcome the lack of nutrients any longer.

Sheila, as Mel used to say about Pumbaa, he's predictable in his unpredictability. And, since more often than not these lows come in the middle of the night, that's why I got in the habit of napping on the sofa instead of going to bed.

I'm taking mom's Freydo to the vet this afternoon, and will find out what he's been tested for and what he hasn't. And, yes, I'm also worried about dehydration, and that's why I gave him water via mouth last night with a feeding syringe. He did come out this morning and ate a little of his food, per my mom, so that's a good sign at least.
