Good morning LL! ~O) ~O) ~O)

Yesterday was, well, pretty darned nice! Sure, he was coming off a bounce from the AM, but he didn't crash to greens (not sure we like greens so much for a while; Mr L goes simply apoplectic with greens), hovered in blues, and ended with a yellow (ok, AMPS is LOW pink). I'll take it!

Leo has discovered the fake palm tree in the corner. He's been stalking it and chewing and swatting the lower couple fronds. Rotten cat! He's sitting under my chair right now, after sleeping cuddle in a ball beside me. ::love:: He's been less enthusiastic about COOKED CHICKEN (horrors) but maybe because it was frozen. I cook about 3 breasts at a time and freeze them. Spoiled? What, a cat? All 5P's doing pretty darned good, although a little poopie action would be nice.

My talk when well last night. Another scientist and I spoke to an engineering sorority about what it's like to work in the FDA labs, and they seemed pretty interested in our talks. I'm an engineering problem-solver, so I talked about how medical devices go bad and sometimes kill people, and what we as engineers do to investigate them, figure out what went wrong, and how educate industry to make safer medical devices. Luckily it started on time, finished on time, and the students wanted to head out shortly after. And since I only work 7 minutes from work, I was home only a little late to shoot! And glad I could with Leo's nice numbers!

Icky cold and rain today. Brrrr. I want to go to the beach with Mannie and the Crew! I wonder where they're off to today. Hopefully after the Master Barista finishes his special deliveries!

Lisa   this made me laugh! Sorry about your plant though! Don't you know anything in your new apartment is part of Leo's territory! It sounds like he's making himself right at home. Wow, your talk sounds so interesting and very impressive. That was nice it happened to end on time and leo's shot worked out okay. Hope you are feeling more settled in the new place. Any luck with your welcome mat. Nice day for Leo yesterday.
Leo, I wonder what Mannie has planned for today. I'll see ya soon, sis Mags

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305

Morning Lisa!
Cool that the students left in time for you to get home to Leo's nice numbers in time for his shot! Sometimes, things work out "just right" dancing_cat

What interesting work you do. Does industry come to you with their broken things or how do you decide what gets analyzed?

Have fun today. I'll try to send you some degrees from here. We're going to be warm enough, we'll have extra.
I'm interested in your surfing food. Is it ok if i lurk around and watch?
hugs
mary and oliver

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305

Too funny on the palm tree.   They do notice anything different immediately. Your talk sounds like it went really well. yay! It's nice that you live so close to work and that you made it home in time to shoot. Have a wonderful day Lisa!!

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305

Hi guys! Glad your talk went well last night, I wish I lived 7 minutes from work, I have over an hour commute every day ugh! It is a fine line experimenting with the food I have found. I just try and feed a little at a time and it seems to work. Hope Leo surfs nicely for you today. Have a great day!

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305

Yes - I got the welcome mat back!!! I had to drop off my cable equipment and it wasn't far from my old place, and I ran up the stairs and snatched it! :-D :-D :-D Funny how a little thing like a $15 mat will get your goat, isn't it?

HI Ann - yes, I know, it's a cat's house that people are allowed to live in  At least he's having fun. We are getting settled - it's actually quite comfy. I'll have to post a pic.

HI Mary - we look at a majority of medical devices that get sold in the US to see if they are safe and effective. When something goes wrong, like reports you hear of people dying because pacemakers failed, for example, we get involved with the manufacturer to find out what happened and get the bad product off the market. Sometimes the engineers get involved if there's a tough technical problem. So, we don't really decide sometimes - the bad products get our attention. Thanks for asking! (And thanks for sending some degrees!)

Please, lurk any time. We all learn from one another, and I'm learning my trial and error with Leo. If you have questions, please ask (ask anyone at any time, too, for anything.) With Leo, I've been surfing him with 9-11%, and I'm figuring out how much I give him, how often, to surf him. And it depends on where he is in the cycle. For example, if he starts to head south (dropping and heading well into the greens), 1/8 can 11% will slow him for about 20-30 minutes. When we get closer to his nadir and he's been surfing decently (which has only happened a few times as I get to know him), the same amount of food will hold him for around 45 minutes. And I have to stop feeding him sooner than I think, and I have to drop to lower carb food sooner, because the food sticks around past nadir and then he flies up because of the food and much more so because Mr. Liver got tweaked with the low values and is dumping glucose. His liver is twitchy with greens, so I'd actually like to keep him out of the greens and surfing in blues to smooth out these horrible bounces. But he is very unpredictable and getting a "rhythm" going is exasperating!

HI Melissa - thanks - the talk went well! Yes, it was sooo surreal to leave work...then arrive "home" in about 12 minutes (desk to door).

Hi Michelle - I agree with the fine-tuning. I just wish he would eat from the feeder so I could fine-tune a little after I have to leave the house. But he tends to ignore it, frustrating! I hope he's surfing ... I'll see when I get home. Eeesh.

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305

I agree, not a pink number, maybe peach?? I'm glad things went so smoothly last night, and only a little late for the shot. Come on Leo time to set up a surf!

After driving myself nuts trying to figure out what % carb food to feed when i finally had it drummed into my head that consistency is most important. Cats don't even need that much variety, think how long most of us fed the same dry kibble day after day before we learned better! :o

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305

It sounds like Leo is getting used to the new apartment. Good luck with the steering by food. I've been trying to figure out how much food to leave out for Furball while I am at work and not having much luck.

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305 +1 349 +11 453

Hi Ann - yeah, I was with you on the peach ... just in time for the flaming RED!!!! He must have been eating nachos and dogs all day long. Sheesh. Consistency makes a lot of sense. I end up writing down the %'s in my logs to hammer in what I'm doing and which food I am giving, although I know the # has slop. The trend is important. We tried a flaked the other day (9%) that gave more boost than the 11% I surf him with when he's lower. There's not much difference between the two numbers, but now I know the difference in the effects. Well, like a CAT would be consistent!!!

Hi Carla - I'm having that trouble too. I think I'm getting a little better about what food would be appropriate for the 3rd meal, but he rarely eats from the feeder. I wonder why I bother. But he eats some of the 3rd at night when I'm at home. Does Furball eat whatever you put out? Is it a matter of Furball wanting more?

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305 +1 349 +11 453

Lisa, Furball will eat whatever I leave out. It is a matter of figuring out how much food to leave out and balancing what will keep her from bouncing vs. leaving too much food and then her not wanting to eat dinner.

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305 +1 349 +11 453

HI LIsa. This has been a very interesting thread. I was experimenting with feeding a tiny bit higher carb to Checkers today, but forgot to make allowances for coming up on nadir. I know I overfeed him, because he's so thin. I can't seem to get it thru my head, that he's never going to get back the wasted muscle.

Your job sounds interesting, and impressive.
And great on working so close to your new home. Leo must be having a great time, exploring. :-D

Funny on snatching back your doormat. Good for you

Re: 11/27 Leo AMPS 305 +1 349 +11 453 PMPS 455 +3 123

+3 123.

Leo just dropped 350 points in 3 hours.

Well well well. Interesting that we were just talking about surfing! I had planned to give him his 3rd dinner -1/2can 4%-ish. Instead, he just got 1/4c 9% (FF Tuna & Mackerel Flaked). He had this for the first time a couple days ago, and it gave him a nice boost early in the cycle. I don't know it's staying power for halting the train, but it's in him now. He's been ravenous. I will check again in 1 hour. (Sometimes I will give in smaller amounts - 1/8c and check more frequently, but he's on his way to nadir and I wanted to be a tad more aggressive, and also because his appetite is good.

HI Carla - oh, I see your question dilemma now. Can you do +11's to get an idea how fast Furball is changing at shot time? You could adjust what you leave based on the change - higher carb or a little more if she is low or heading low?

Hi Barb - glad you are interested in what's going on. Poor Checkers, it must be frustrating that you can't magically make him young and spry again. Are you feeding him *more* than you normally would? Or just giving the same amount but higher carbs? Or giving that too soon in the cycle? It really is a challenge, isn't it? Yay on the doormat, right?   Thanks on my job - it's a neat job and I like doing it.

What you doing Leo? That is definitely quite the drop. Sounds like mama is doing a lot of food experimenting with you.

Be safe tonight!!

Glad to hear you are getting settled into the new apt. Love the palm tree story. Oh the things we will tolerate for those little munchkins.

Hi Lisa - sorry for the late visit... what with DGS all day, and now Mannie's PJ party, I am so behind on condo visiting... I hope your day has been a good one. :-D

LEO - Meet me! the lagoon! ~ Mannie

Somebody is in a hurry to get to the lagoon. Surf safely tonight Leo.

Interesting work that you do. I hope the talk convinces more of them to graduate from engineering.
