Good Morning LL. I really want to thank each and every one of you for all your support and concern during this crazy, worrisome, and often baffling time for Kibby and me. I feel so bad that he's having to go thru all this, plus me being sick at the same time, and your words have really helped.

Kibby was quite hungry this morning, and it just broke my heart to have to deny that sweet, adorable little face. I made everyone else wait for breffis until he was gone, so at least he wasn't singled out. I dropped him off at the vet at 830. The radiologist should be there at 10 for the u/s and then they'll do the surgery pretty much back to back, since he'll already be sedated. I think I'll clean out his cupboard in the bathroom, and just make a nice bed for him in there, so he'll have a nice safe space to recover this evening. I'm expecting he'll have a drain in, and of course an e-collar, so I want as few obstacles as possible. After I do that, I'll probably spend the day in bed again. I'm definitely getting better, but it's very slowly, like today is a tiny bit better than yesterday. I'm on the meds thru Friday, so I expect to be having some nausea until that's done.

We truly appreciate all your prayers, vines, white light, etc.

Re: 11/27 Kibby u/s and surgery today

(((Anne))) Sending you lots of hugs so you feel better and many many healing vibes to Kibby. I hope both the u/s and draining of the abscess are easy and successful. Maybe he will start to recover quickly once they address the abscess. I hope that is all it is ... a localized infection. I'll be watching for updates.

Hang in there!

Re: 11/27 Kibby u/s and surgery today

Sending white light and lots of healing vines for Kibby today, and for you too. i hope there are no further complications for the poor little guy. I'm sure he'll appreciate having his sanctum al fixed up!

Many joules of healing energy to Kibby, especially today, and to you, too, Anne. What a week! Kibby is one lucky kitty to have you for his bean.

Re: 11/27 Kibby u/s and surgery - update

Just got an update from the vet. U/S looked really good. Kidneys, liver, stomach, pancreas all look normal. Spleen, which was enlarged on one of his xrays this past week is normal now. Gall bladder is slightly distended, but they didn't see anything in it or the bile duct. Now on to the abscess. It was huge - 7-8cm and really deep. The inside edge is really close to the abdominal wall, so they couldn't do aggressive draining, as it may cause peritonitis. He did get I think he said 70ml of thick nasty pus out. He has a drain in, and Dr said it may drain for a week to 10 days, so he will really need to be confined during that time. I'll probably have to shut him in my bathroom most of the time. We are still uncertain of the cause of the abscess. The u/s doc looked for foxtail or any foreign bodies, and there was nothing there. On Kibby's skin, there is evidence of an old scratch, like a scar, but that's not even where the abscess is. So Dr suspects that way back in late September, early October, Kibby probably got in a fight and got bitten. That's probably been the cause of everything he's been going thru since then. The wound probably completely healed up on the outside, but left the infection inside. In fighting this infection for so long, this most likely compromised his immune system enough for the Mycoplasm to start causing symptoms. This theory makes total sense and explains everything that's been happening to my poor boy. Doc hasn't checked the pcv yet, today, but he will once Kibby comes more out of the sedation. He is still dehydrated, so he's getting IV fluids, but only at a rate of about 5ml per hour. He should be able to tolerate that without a problem.

So he will come home this evening, remain on zeniquin and doxycycline, and I have tramadol for pain. He will continue to visit the vet every day for a while, both to have pcv checked and to make sure the abscess is draining correctly. Dr suspects that now that the abscess is taken care of, he should bounce back from the anemia fairly quickly, much faster than was estimated even just yesterday morning.

Whew for a successful operation and good results on the U/S. Yuck on the 1/4+ cup of puss they drained. Poor Kibby! Keeping him confined in a bathroom sounds like a good idea. Sending lots of healing vines to both of you.

Re: 11/27 Kibby u/s and surgery - update

Hope the surgery and U/S go smoothly so you can both get some rest. E-Collars - ick! Kibby, you be a good kitty and don't make this any harder than it needs to be! Hugs to you both!

Edit: I didn't see the update before I submitted...sounds like all went well. Time to get on the path back to good health!

It's so so so good to hear that Kibby is on the road to recovery! I'm sure he will love his own little space in the cupboard. Bless his little heart. Now I hope that this reduces some of the stress and worry on your system so YOU get better .
Prayers and white healing light to you both
Lots of hugs and big YAHOO.

That is good news with Kibby! Healing vines for a good recovery and feel better vines for you, Anne.

Re: 11/27 Kibby u/s and surgery - update

Oh great news on the surgery and u/s. Ick on the size of the abscess and all the goop that came out. I wish they had been able to be more aggressive with it, but hopefully it will drain and heal nicely. Hopefully all the problems really were a result of the fight, so you know it's not other lingering unrelated things, and Kibby can heal and move on. Too bad about the cone of shame. I feel so bad to see them in it. :-(

I hope you start feeling better too (((hugs)))

Re: 11/27 Kibby u/s and surgery - update

Kibby's home! Again, the first thing he did was try to jump on the desk, didn't make it, and fell. ohmygod_smile I gave him a can of food, which he devoured, and really wants more, but I'm going to make him wait a while. He's locked in the bathroom, and trying desperately to get out. Rumpy is sitting at the door trying to help him. But the minute I let him out, he goes straight for the desk to try and jump up there (it's one of their feeding spots). He's of course freaking out about the cone, but does try to lick the wound, so no way is that coming off. Shnookie takes those off himself, but he doesn't usually mess with his wound sites, so I don't worry about it too much with him. I just hope Kibby can't take it off.

The u/s report states the abscess had 2 different cavities, the lower of which was only separated by a thin membrane from the abdomen, so they really had to be careful with the draining. He will go back to the vet in the morning, for further monitoring. He still has a temp of 103.4, and he did get about 100mls IV fluids today. His pcv was down to 24% but that's probably from the fluids diluting his blood. Every couple of days he'll go back in so they can try to drain more and clean out the wound. He'll get pain meds tonight in an hour or 2, and then doxycycline in the am and zeniquin in the pm.

I'm so relieved that he's finally on the road to recovery, but having him here in this state is stressful, too. I'll definitely be setting alarms throughout the night to check on him.

Mine can bend herself far enough that the cone isn't long enough. We had to get a deeper one for our little contortionist.
And I just slept on the bathroom floor ....

Hope Kibby will be cooperative so healing can commence....

Anne --

What about setting up some kind of "steps" so Kibby can get to the desk? (Boxes, a step ladder, whatever.) It's going to be had to keep Kibby locked up the entire time. If he wants to get up on the desk, well, you know how determined a cat can be! Maybe letting him get up the easy way will help.

Sienne - I left the room for a minute and when I came back, he was on the desk! :o So that's a really good idea - I'll try to set something up for him. For tonight, tho, I will keep him locked in the bathroom. I'm hoping he'll settle down in there, since there wont be anything going on, and not much to do in there. ;-)

We have lots of accommodations for Zener to get on things. One thing we did was put books in a box then cover the box with a rug and towel using a bungy cord.

OMG that was huge! Sending every vine i can find to send to Kibby. We gotta teach theses cats to tell us when they hurt!

Hey, remember the "wife beater" Ts that , hmmmm who was it that had to wear that? Pne of those or a baby T might help?

Ann - I thought about that, putting a shirt on him, but I'm not sure it's safe to do since the wounds are supposed to drain. I'll check with the vet tomorrow, tho.

Anne - That's a great idea. For now I just put a crate next to my chair and covered it with a towel. He does already have a staircase of sorts with the cat tree there, but it requires some arching of the back to get from the cat tree shelf to the desk, so this way he has 2 options.

I gave him his pain meds - good news is, he's loving pill pockets now, so this should be easier than I expected. During his stays at the vet, they've been feeding him Hills AD, and much to my chagrin, he's addicted to it! So I had to buy a couple cans of that, just so I wouldn't be stuck with him not eating, and he just can't get enough of it! He turns his nose up at anything else. Oh well, with everything he's been thru, he deserves to eat what he wants. :?

What a day for you, Anne. I know how worried you are about Kibby but its great he's home with you and they know what's going on. Sending more prayers and healing vines.

Hi Anne - sorry for the late visit... what with DGS all day, and now Mannie's PJ party, I am so behind on condo visiting... I hope your day has been a good one. :-D

I am sorry that I missed all of this with eh abscess with Kibby. omg on it all. I am so glad that all is going well, and he is recovering. Abscesses are so tough, grains are so impt. (Been though something similar with one of mine, drains, etc., not as severe are kibby's though) I will be thinking of you, hoping all continues to go well. now that you now the problem you can work on healing. Hugs to all there!

I could have sworn I posted yesterday. I'm so glad everything went well with the u/s and surgery. Sending prayers & healing vines to Kibby and prayers for peace of mind to you.
