Well when she clears a bounce she really clears a bounce. Actually this is more clearing the carb load after she was caught on mom's desk happily helping herself to mom's bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. She was very pleased with herself for making it all the way up on the desk to get the prize..and didn't have a clue why mom was upset, because she obviously didn't want her sammie since she left it just sitting there when she went to go potty. Ahhhhh WRONG!

I keep forgetting that now that she has been on the cosequin Autumn's mobility has increased and what was once safely out of her reach is no longer safe. But I still didn't think she could master the top of the desk, since it is an old antique roll top and fairly tall and Autumn never has been a jumper, at least not since I've known her, but apparently if bacon is involved she can get anywhere she needs to get to get bacon...lol

LOL! Yup, my cats can get anywhere when there is food involved! What is cosequin? I am still concerned about Silver's neuropathy which is not improving much.

Re: 11/25 Autumn amps-427, +4-157, +6-86,+8-62

Cosequin is a joint health supplement, Autumn is an ancient girl of 18 years old approx. Don't really know how old she really is as her previous owner when they listed her to be rehomed listed her as 5 years old but she is no where close to 5 years old, she is much much older. Plus she at some time before I adopted her was shot in the face, neck and shoulder. Which has caused nerve damage in her back, to the point she has no use of her tail. Because of both her advanced age and her injuries she has arthritis so that is why she takes the Cosequin.

BACON!!! BACON BACON BACON...

Speaking of Cosequin - last night someone was in the corner of the living room batting a ball around... Boy was I surprised to find Alska playing. It's rare but cute.

Although, jumping to the top of a roll top desk is quite a feat! She must have used the TRAMPOLINE

Re: 11/26 Autumn amps-82

Well probably playing with fire here, but I'm trying to get her back to a 12/12 schedule again so since I'm home all day today and can run a curve I went ahead and shot this morning and have been shooting her on a 12/12 while she was bouncing so high. So either this morning's shot will work and we will be back on the standard 12/12 or she will make a run for the basement again and I will know we just have to play by her rules and go back to the 16/16 shooting schedule.

Re: 11/26 Autumn amps-82, +2-166

There we go, going up where she is suppose to, now to see if she comes down again where she is suppose to. You would think after 2+ years of doing this dance she would at least have gotten curious enough to at least skim over the manuals on how to be a good sugar cat...lol

Okay so far this is looking like a typical Levemir curve, if it stays on course we should have onset in about an hour or so then a slow slide down to next preshot...But then again this is Autumn and she has been over to see Tibbs and his trampoline a lot lately!

Tibbs is having so much fun over there that he's inviting all his friends! flip_cat

Re: 11/26 Autumn amps-82, +2-166, +4-240, +6-530 WTH?

So need to lock up that trampoline! Actually I think this is what I get for not waiting her out and trying to get her to conform to the standard 12/12 instead of the 16/16. Either that or she has a much later onset than she use to have. But so not liking the numbers so far today.

New and need help

Greetings all. I'm new here and need some answers...my dear sweet Tuxedo cat Napoleon was diagnosed 2.5 weeks ago. He is on 5 units Lantus q12 hours. His initial BG was 451 but now he's runnnng 170-180 fasting.

My question is this...when will I see a cessation of symptoms, primarily urination outside his box? He pees all over the garage floor. Sometimes he uses the box but most times he uses the floor and it's quite copious.

I can't seem to find an answer to this question. Help? Your experiences?

Re: 11/26 Autumn amps-82, +2-166, +4-240, +6-530 WTH?

First off how in the heck did he get to 5u of Lantus that is one hefty dose for a kitty especially if this is where his vet started him on? Second what is his current diet and lastly are you testing him at home?

Basically the peeing volumes should stop once he is regulated, but without knowing first how he got on the gigantic dose, what he is eating and what he is testing at home it is kind of hard to guess why he is still peeing so much, since lots of things can cause excessive peeing.

Re: 11/26 Autumn amps-82, +2-166, +4-240, +6-530 WTH?

Oh and I guess I should add that none of my diabetics pee anymore or any less than my other 13 cats (yes I have 16, 3 of which are diabetic). Although when one is running extremely high they do tend to drink more, and thus will also pee more.

My biggest concern is the dose your Napoleon is on, Last year I adopted a diabetic cat Cassanova that was on 11u twice daily and his previous owner wasn't testing at home, poor Cassanova was on a roller coaster of highs and lows and back then he was peeing oceans, with bad coat condition, severe neuropathy and extremely overweight from being free fed dry food (probably the only thing that kept him alive on that high of a dose) today after a short return to insulin after getting hurt he has been insulin free since September 8th of this year.

Ouch that's a scary number...

Re: 11/26 Autumn amps-82, +2-166, +4-240, +6-530 WTH?

Napoleon was on 3 units bid initially, then went to four, then to five last week. I test him with a glucose meter and since I'm a nurse I'm very aware about diet. He's on prescription d/m food from science diet. He doesn't really care for it but he eats it. I'm thinking of going raw. He's never been a free feeder and the only dry food available is also d/m. He is eating less than he used to and his blood sugar is about 170 when he's troughing at 3:00 in the afternoon. He's drinking less than he used to as well.

Anyone have any ideas about diet that will satisfy him and keep him low carb? My other two cats aren't happy eating d/m but it's better for them than the high carb low protein canned food.

Re: 11/26 Autumn amps-82, +2-166, +4-240, +6-530 WTH?

Hi,
Most of us here feed Fancy Feast Classic. The Classic variety is low carb, high protein. Personally I find the Rx food too expensive and my cat doesn't like it much anyways.

Can I suggest that you start your own thread so we don't hijack Mel's?

Re: 11/26 Autumn amps-82, +2-166, +4-240, +6-530 WTH?

First off he was started on far too high of a dose. Cats should be started no higher than 1 unit bid, and then the dose is adjusted in .25u increments at a time.

As far as diet goes there are lots of options available on the commercial market, depending where in the world you are located. I have 3 diabetics two in remission as well as 13 non-diabetic cats everyone here eats exactly what my diabetics eat which is just plain Friskies Pate style canned food, although many around here use, Fancy Feast, Wellness or EVO but that is here in the US, there are other products available if you are in Canada or overseas. Just need to know where you are roughly located and we can give you a ton of suggestions for diet.

Also we do ask that everyone start their own threads, or as we call them condos, this is my Autumn's condo, so if you would please start your own thread we can all jump in and help out as much as possible.

Also Lantus is held for a full week at a time at the same dose and then adjustments are made off the nadir or lowest point in the cycle. You are jumping the dose up by too much and too fast.

Okay that is more like it, maybe I had a bad read at +6, because that is definitely out of the ordinary and doesn't fit with the rest of the flow of numbers. Plus I was a bad mommy and didn't retest on that +6 number, because it was the last strip in the vial and I was being swamped by cats looking for testing treats   So I was bad and just handed out the treats instead of trying to wade through the cats to get the new vial of strips just to retest.

Please tell me how to start a new thread. I'm sorry if I bothered anyone. I do not see a link to starting a new thread which I'd be happy to do.
Also, I've only increased the dosage per the vet. I'm in Tennessee so suggest whatever foods work for your cats. I'm eager to try the Fancy Feast Classic if it will help. I have two other cats and they aren't diabetics so they want something good.

hi Poleysmom,
welcome to the group, so happy to have you here. no worries about the posting. it's just easier if u start ur own condo so we can keep track and help you. all you do is go to the top of the forum. you'll see "New topic" click on that then put the date , cat's name and some readings.
for example my cat ( 11/25 Tibbs amps 475 pmps 330)
amps is AM Preshot reading & pmps is PM preshor reading. you can start a new thread every day or add to the old one if u like. again welcome and please ask away with questions.
we all use some version of pate which is lower carb. fancy feast, friskies....no gravies as these are too high carb. i will find the link for foods and post it to your new condo.

Lol! Thats an interesting visual picture. I only have two cats to trip over and that is plenty enough ;-) Not happy with Silver's reading tonight either. Bad mommy did a fur shot this morning :-(
