Trust AND verify.
I picked up new ReliOn syringes - they were 3/10 U-100, but had new orange caps.
And the friend who gives the insulin on Tuesday nights when I have rehearsal read the syringe wrong.
I don't know why I thought to ask him @ 10 pm when I got home to show me how much he gave, but when he did, it was 10 units, not 1 unit, given at about 9 pm.
CRAP
I quickly grabbed a can of A/D and started feeding Spitzer, while getting a carrier set up.
My friend drove us to MedVet (Worthington/Columbus, OH).
Spitzer will, obviously, be staying the night and following day for monitoring and a glucose IV to handle the 9 extra units he got.

OMG! I'm so glad you didn't waste any time and you took him in to the ER.
Sending you lots of calming thoughts and lots of get well vibes to Spitzer!

Keep us updated when you can. I'm sure he is in very good hands and will ride through this with ease.

Thank G*d it is a slow insulin; if it'd been NPH, he'd've been seizuring by the time I got home.

And now I'm having an ocular migraine - no pain, just weird flashing lights from blood vessel spasms.

OMG.. I'm glad he's at the ER now so they can help early on.. He's in good hands there..

Let us know what happens..

OMG....I am so glad you asked him how much he shot....and that you got to the ER immediately. We are keeping Spitzer in our prayers....he's the best
place he can be right now for them to give him glucose.

Wow BJ, I'm so sorry that happened! How fortunate that you caught it so quickly and got him to the ER vet...nice job! I'm sure they will take good care of him, and I hope he will be fine. Please keep us updated.

A suggestion for the future....many people here use a sample syringe, filled with colored water or milk (I use milk) as a guide for others drawing insulin. It's a good way for the DPS to verify that they are giving the correct amount of insulin.

BJ take care of yourself too. I'd be shaking in my boots for sure. I hope your spasms and flashing lights calm down. Whew! What an evening you are having!

Oh dear BJ how frightening for you. I'm so sorry and now the potential migraine threatening I hope he is fine by tomorrow and comes home to have cuddles. Prayers and healing light.

That you even thought to ask your friend about the dose is nothing less than a miracle. Good thinking and fast action.

Like CD noted, take care of yourself. I'd be a basket case.

(((BJ)))
It was quick thinking that you asked your friend how much insulin he gave Spitzer.
We will be thinking of you and Spitzer. Please let us know how he is when you can.

Good catch! You must have sensed something to have asked your friend how much he shot... You sound like you reacted so clear-headed! Great job!

Spitzer's in the right place - they'll take good care of him. Hope he's home with you soon and that your heart has stopped pounding by now!

OMG what a scary situation you and Spitzer have been in the last few hrs...I'm glad you got home when you did....please keep us updated....
Laurie, this is a good tip...i will make sure i'll remember it....

thank goodness your instincts were in fine form and you asked about the insulin dose. Sending healing vines for both Spitzer and you.

wow...great catch!

hoping for quick recovery for both you and spitzer...

and i'll bet i know what you are thankful for tomorrow!

My thoughts and prayers are with you both. I hope that he pulls through and comes home today. *HUGS* Hang in there, girl, and please provide updates when you are able.

The ONLY people that can trust with my cats are my vets and my neighbor across the street. My neighbor's a phlebotomist, and handles needles all the time (she draws blood for a living). I don't trust my SIL and BIL to take care of my cats, especially when it comes to Blackie. I highly doubt that Blackie would allow either of the latter to come close to her, especially for testing and shooting. She barely tolerates DH. LOL
