Josie was at 365 at +8 after her pm shot, and at 295 this morning, for her amps.

Do normal cats have the same number all day pretty much (except after eating?)

By normal, do you mean non-diabetic? Not having tested my civvie, I can't say for sure. However, in humans, like in cats, there's a normal range for BG. Ideally, BG levels will fluctuate within that range with the exception of after a big meal (e.g., Thanksgiving dinner) or eating something that's high in carbs or sugar. I'm sure most of us have experienced low BG if we haven't eaten for a while and high BG if we ate an extravagant dessert or a lot of candy.

If you look at some of the SSs of cats who are OTJ or on a trial, their numbers should be pretty flat. They may fluctuate but remain largely in the 50 - 120 range. However, even with OTJ kitties there are exceptions. Barbara's Tuffy is one that immediately comes to mind. Tuffy's numbers can jump outside of the normal range when she's stressed. They come back down in a couple of hours.

Yeah, thats what I meant, thanks.
I jusst find it so stressful having her numbers be so up and down every day and not understanding why. I wish they would level out some.
Do you know why/how stress makes the blood sugar higher?

Re: 11/23 Josie +8 365 AMPS 295

Humans and animals both have "stress" hormone -- corticosteroids. (These are forms of cortisone.) When stressed by something in the environment or by illness or infection, part of the way the body responds is to release these hormones. One consequence of their release is that it raises BG levels. In the big picture, if you are being threatened by something in the environment, you want to have that "fight or flight" response. If you're ill, higher BG makes nutrients more available. Some cats (and people) also experience what's called "dawn phenomenon." This is the body's natural rhythm whereby corticosteroids are released overnight to prepare the body for the stress of the day and BG levels are higher in the morning.

What I think is happening with Josie, though, is that she's bouncing. She experiences lower numbers and since her body isn't yet used to being in those ranges, her liver responds by releasing a stored form of glucose and counterregulatory hormones. These raise BG. It's the body's safety system and a natural pattern. The more time Josie spends in lower numbers, the less her liver will over react.

Hi guys .. I just have to say, I'm so thankful to have Sienne around on this board .. you are always so full of knowledge and make it all seem so clear and easy to understand! But ok, back to Josie, at least she decided to start the day out on the yellow floor .. let's hope there's some blue added to the SS before the day is over! I won't be here this weekend, so have a wonderful holiday!

Nice recovery! Way to go Josie! Tarragon is one of those cats whose BG goes way up with any stress. Hope you have a great day!

Yay Josie!!!! Glad to see you getting into those nice blue numbers.

Angela: if you have some time, look at some of the other cats' SSs like Sienne's Gabby, Michelle's Mannie,Devon's Mocha, my Gracie's lantus SS.....you'll see quite a few cats doing this very same thing. Mocha did this bouncy stuff for about 21 months and then stopped and three weeks later went OTJ.

21 months! wow. i sure hope josie gets balanced before then, i think i will go crazy if i have to keep this up that long.

That's most likely a bounce. Josie dropped almost 200 points between AMPS and +6. That's a sizable drop. It caused her liver to "panic" the way I described above. All you can do is wait for the bounce to clear. This can take as long as 72 hours.
