11/20 Thos AM +12=103 after lots of food for past day or so

Today, and the second half of yesterday, Thos has been eating a lot. So I was surprised when what would have been his PMPS came up 103, with food just an hour before (which I usually won't do). We've mostly been seeing yellow and magenta of late. I was going to just stall but he made it clear he was still hungry, so he got a bit more food. He has been a bit off lately so I'm happy to see him eating so well.

Though inside today (we're snowbound), he's been pretty perky. Even galloped down the hallway -- I don't know when I last saw him gallop inside. We have just done a four-dose run of meloxicam every other day in the morning. (Yes, I know but I've read enough to be willing to give it a cautious try.)

Any idea what this is all about? Thanks! - Tom

I don't know when I last saw him gallop inside.

Isn't it wonderful when they start to act like they feel better??

It's not at all unusual for them to eat more when their blood glucose goes lower than they're used to. The body thinks it's "too low" and tells them to eat......just like when a human diabetic runs a little low they get hungry!

The next time you get a PS you're not sure about shooting, try stalling, don't feed and post for help. Test again in 20-30 minutes to see if the number comes up without the influence of food. Usually if you've got plenty of supplies and are going to be able to test, it's going to be OK to shoot

As long as you were home and snowbound, it would have been a good idea to try to do a curve (test every 2 hours for 12 hours)…..I know you want to try to just keep him under renal threshold without doing a lot of testing, but it can really be helpful to get a curve at least once a week to see what's going on.

Thanks, once again, Chris.

I knew I should've stalled but Thos made it quite clear he wanted more food, and I hate to turn down a good appetite. The lowest I've shot full dose thus far is 137, so I probably would've skipped anyhow.

It has been three weeks since I've done anything like a curve, and they never seem consistent. But we're definitely due one. Especially since I'm about to ask my vet about notching up the dose. And now I've sorely tested my guy's patience for pokes.

We wound up +12=103, +13=97, +14=109, +15=103, +17=113 for the evening. I'll be curious to see what tomorrow brings.
