11-5 TYLER. UPDATE TYLER IS IMPROVING SO FAR

Diane Tyler's Mom GA

Member Since 2018
Hi everyone, yesterday morning Tyler started howling very loud.
Walking around with him tail down which he never does.
Back and forth in the litter box trying to pee but couldn't go and he also was howling.
I touched his belly and he howled and growled so I know something was wrong and he was in pain

I called the practice I go to and had to see another vet that was filling in for the day
Since the vet I used to see had left the practice.
When I had Tyler's blood work done in Sept I saw the owner who I know good, but he was away when I brought Tyler in yesterday

So I told the vet what was happening ,said he threw up once ,it was clear liquid ,told her about the howling and not peeing.
Feels his stomach, give me cerenia which was crazy, tells me an ultra sound would cist around 600.00 . From what I told her you would think that might think he was blocked
I left

So last night he got worse ,took him to the ER at around midnight
They were wonderful. Saw a vet told her everything she did an ultrasound ,it was like a mini machine ,said Hus bladder looked fine then looked at his penis it was purple and inflamed
Gave me 3 options keep him there for 3 days with the catheter in to unblock him about 4000.00
Or put a catheter in then and unblock him, I said OK
Did bloom work, it was all good, they hardly had to sedate him .
I saw like little pieces of sand coming out.
So I guess they were crystals
I know some of you don't like Onisor but she gave him an injection of it
Sent me home with 3 pills only
Gabapentin ,if I wanted buprenorphine she would give me that instead ,, I said no that's OK
Also gave me Prazosin

So now today he diet pee yet, in and out of litter box but not crying or howling at all
He was happy tail up , eating
I called the ER back and they said bring him in they wanted to feel his bladder
It felt soft and not that much urine in it something like that
Said if he didn't pee by tonight bring him back

Well he finally peed twice already thank god.
I was so irate about the other vet I saw and called and spoke to Dr Pla another one of the owners and told him how pissed off I was that the vet didn't even think he could be blocked by what I told her he was doing, not peeing and howling
I said why the hell did she give him a cerenia shot, I'm the dumb one that let her give it even though I knew he only threw up that once.
I asked why didn't she look at his penis
Of course he defended her and said well she offered to do an ultrasound and you said no. I said right for 600.00 . He said wrote that she knew he had pain but didn't know where it was coming from
I said to him look I think we should end this conversation now before I really say something you won't like!
I said you should give me my money back but we know that won't happen!
He said nothing and said to let him know how Tyler is doing, yeah right that might happen
Wait until the other owner gets back and I talk to him, he's in Antarctica now

He also told me you can't see crystals ,I said well I saw something
I think it's time to find another vet or just take Tyler there when Dr Beeber is there the other owner who I know good.

A question you all know I don't know much about anything lol
I started him on Tiki Cat Succulent Chicken because it's low phosphorus adding it to his FF Pate
Right now he's eating almost just the Tiki Cat
Started this around middle of Oct
Does anyone think changing the food could have caused him to get blocked?
I asked the ER vet today and she really didn't know
The only thing I read about it is that it's high protein

Poor Tyler went through hell last night and then again today because I had to take him back to the ER again, but thank God he finally peed.
I will be watching him like a hawk now
Got home at 2:30 AM last night .
Oh the bill came to 1288.00
I don't care if anyone knows but I had to file bankruptcy ,petition sent in so I don't have to pay any of the payments which is a big relief. Should be finalized by early Jan
My dear sister put it on her credit card and I'll pay her off monthly
I don't know what I would have done

Thanks for listening guys :bighug::bighug::bighug::cat:

Poor Tyler! I’m so glad he is ok and hope he continues to heal.
A rescue acquaintance of mine put together a list of high quality wet foods that meet magnesium and phosphorus specifications to prevent crystals from forming. I’ll paste the link here, and hope you can find some good foods to help keep them at bay for good. https://docs.google.com/document/d/...SkZYTl590ZKB4QvOvl6UR2Vxf9GeNvZY2rTfZ3hg18CYA
ETA these all happen to be <10% carbs, too.

Oh no, what a nightmare, I'm so sorry Diane both for you and poor Tyler. That first vet was so useless!
I'm glad he is peeing normally again. I don't have any insight about the food, but sending lots of healing vibes :bighug:

I had another thought too- if he’s been having urinary tract issues, I think that can affect his kidney values which I think you previously mentioned were high, so you might want to have those rechecked after he’s been on the mend for awhile.

Hi Jackie, they checked his kidneys last night at the ER all was good
Even his blog work I just had done this Sept kidney's were good
I just wanted to start feeding him wet that were low in phosphorus since the FF is pretty high in phosphorus :cat:

First time this happened with the blockage

Oh, good, glad his kidneys and bloodwork look good! I must have misunderstood about that. Sleep deprivation. :blackeye:

I know that a blockage is unfortunately more likely to happen again once it has happened, so getting some of the foods from the list I posted above might be a good way to go. Take it easy and hope Tyler feels better very soon! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Max blocked when he was about 5. The vet pierced his bladder and he had to have emergency surgery. It was tough and go. They put him in Hills CD and then I switched fancy feast. He never blocked again but I made many trips to the ER late at night because he hadn’t peed. He was eating a lot of CD dry at first which didn’t help. I had to Viacom him to wet the wet. There is a product you can give to make the urine the correct Ph but I don’t recall what it is. Do you know what type of crystals?:bighug:

I switched him in Oct to Weruva Chicken Frick a Zee and Tiki Cat Succulent Chicken
I started mixing it with the FF Pate little by little ,almost down to just the Weruva and Tiki Cat by itself

I'm so sorry you and Tyler had to go through that. I'm glad he peed today. I hope he continues to stay unblocked. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Elise I'm going to call them right now and ask what type of crystals they were
Struvite the ER doctor said to watch what I have been feeding himI switched him from FF Pate to Tiki Cat Succulent Chicken and sometimes I give him Weruva Chicken Frick a Zee
So now what do I have to do see how much magnesium is in them
I'm a wreck Elise
@tiffmaxee

the Weruva Chicken Frick a Zee does this make sense
Magnesium as fed says 0.01
Dry matter says 0.07

I e mailed Tiki Cat about the Succulent Chicken
Tiki cat responded basic nutrient profile magnesium is 0.02
Dry matter is 0.08
If you can remember that product for the PH that would be great
The ER just e mailed the urinalisis I'll post it tomorrow , they said when they get the rest of the blood work back they will e mail it to me :bighug::bighug:

Don't tell me that, I'll shoot myself

I hope with all my heart he doesn’t experience it again. I know it is agonizing for them. I really think with diet it can be prevented and maybe adding extra water since one of the foods he was on was already one of the recommended ones.

The rescue I volunteered with has helped several blocked kitties and they were always dry food addicts. It’s pretty rare for a cat on all wet food to have crystals so I think you have that going for Tyler since he has been a wet food eater for years.

Cerenia has some anti-inflammatory properties, my civvie with cystitis would get it when he was having an attack. Along with buprenorphine (it's very painful), prazosin a couple times, and also cartrophen, which is your equivalent to Adequan. Low phosphorus foods with lots of water added will help flush out crystals. Civvie also got some glucosamine chondroitin supplements, which are supposed to help bladder walls.

Thank you Wendy, he's still peeing tonight but they are small clumps so far, this afternoon the 2 were much bigger. So now I'm worried again lol

Oh poor guy that must have been so hard for him as well as you. Sending healing wishes. Lando had crystals over 6 yrs ago so i honestly cant shed any light on what may have caused them

Oh no, poor Tyler -- I'm so sorry he had to go through that, and you along with him. Let's hope it never happens again.
I'm glad you gave that first vet a piece of your mind. I can't believe they would medicate and send him home without getting to the bottom of it. My cat Chulo got blocked a couple of times when he was young, and I remember the vet saying it's always an emergency when that happens, just bring him in. I'm so glad you had a great vet who took care of him at the ER, and I hope that by tomorrow the whole ordeal will be in the rear view mirror. Sending big hugs and healing wishes to both of you! :bighug::cat::bighug:

Hi Karen it was one of the owners I laid into lol
When the other owner gets back from his vacation I'm calling him too
He's been peeing last night and today, eating like a pig and Hus tail is up lol
I keep constantly checking the litter box. He's got meds to finish taking yet
I couldn't believe how good he is to pill him.
I never had to do it before. Thanks for checking in :bighug::bighug::bighug::cat:

How is Tyler doing today? Hope he's giving you big fat pee clumps!
Hi Virginie he's doing good , his pee clumps are about med size, I always put lots of water in his food, the bum won't drink water out of a bowl, water fountain or from the sink! I'll put some water on my finger and wipe it on his lips and show him the bowl he still won't drink from it. Weirdo :p
He still has more of his meds to finish yet
Thanks for checking in :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Your not alone Panzer & Spook won't drink water from anything at all either:rolleyes: so I put 3 tablespoons of water in there food everytime they eat:smuggrin: glad to hear he's doing better :bighug:

Calcium 1.18
Sodium 0.25
Does the magnesium look low enough ?
If you can remember that product for the PH that would be great

Do you think what I'm feeding him OK to try to prevent this happening again?

@Diane Tyler's Mom check out this detailed info: https://www.vetmed.umn.edu/sites/vetmed.umn.edu/files/feline_struvite_uroliths.pdf

Specifically, this, which would apply to Tyler since he shouldn't eat prescription food as it's too high in carbs. Maybe you could bring this up with the ER vet?

Hi. We never knew what type of crystals Max had because the vet pierced his bladder. My vet put him on CD and he never blocked again but did scare me many times by waiting until midnight or later to urinate. He was just 5 and not diabetic but in that food for years until pancreatitis when my vet said to put him on any wet food he would eat. I was at the ER many times the first few months after his surgery. I remember there was a gel that could be added to his food to get the right ph but it was too many years ago. Male cats have such a small opening that just a few crystals can cause a blockage. Sorry I am not much help.

@Diane Tyler's Mom
Not sure if you had a chance to look at this but it addresses what you were asking about magnesium and phosphorus content. This list that was compiled by a friend of mine who studied animal nutrition and the foods should be good for preventing crystals and kidney disease, and also are under 10% carbs.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/...SkZYTl590ZKB4QvOvl6UR2Vxf9GeNvZY2rTfZ3hg18CYA
From the list:
“These foods are all ≤ 0.10% magnesium and ≤ 300mg/100kcals of phosphorus (or ≤ 1.2% phosphorus) based on a Typical Nutrient Analysis on a dry matter basis (besides struvite crystal formation, note that excess magnesium and phosphorus can have a laxative effect, and excess phosphorus exacerbates kidney disease). These are the thresholds for crystals cats and overall kidney health as stated by Dr. Lisa Pierson (catinfo.org) and/or via my coursework for my Canine and Feline Nutrition Certificate through SIU Carbondale. They are also ≤ 10% carbs, which is recommended for all cats (especially diabetic cats). For diabetic cats, Dr. Pierson says that once you get to the ≤ 10% carb threshold, the exact number isn't that important. The lower these numbers are, the better, but one must also consider the overall quality of the food, ingredient sourcing and manufacturing, company transparency, etc.”

I Can't even see what I'm typing because I'm crying so much you all know I had Tyler at the ER on Wed he was blocked , I couldn't Afford to keep him there for 3 days so they unblocked him sent me home with meds . He did start peeing on Thurs afternoon finally nice big clumps then they started to get much smaller.
Last night it started again in and out of the litter box ,nothing
This morning in and out of the litter box non stop. Not howling like he did the first time. My sister paid for the visit 1288.00. I just filed bankruptcy so I have no credit cards I could use.The petition was already filed
I guess there isn't anything I can do for him at home.
I just can't believe this happened again this fast.
I can go to the ER and have him put to sleep there , I'm waiting for my vet to open at 9 AM and see what they might be able to do for me.
First his brother Perry I had to put to sleep last Oct kidney failure and now Tyler
I'll even have to ask my sister for the money to put him to sleep.
My heart is just breaking , I'm shaking
I'll let everyone know what happens.
Tyler has been in remission since 1-24-21 and now this:(:(:(:(
