YAY! Morris ate 1/2 his food yesterday! And he actully ate the food part too - not just drinking the water part & leaving the food part! I think his mouth is starting to feel better!

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329

Yay for eating your food, Morris. Keep feeling better.

Can you put something in your Subject Line of your first post today to reflect this, to catch more eyes for advice?

Eating is important for healing, and the liver.
This will bump you up..

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463

It is important for Morris to eat and not just because he's diabetic and on insulin. Can you fill me in - did Morris have teeth removed? Did they give him bupe for pain or something else?

You can try making his food into a milkshake like consistency and see if he can lap it up. Put chicken dust on top. Feed him food that will tempt him or mix it with other food.

I often post on threads where a cat isn't eating for a variety of reasons to get out the message of assist feeding. All cat owners should try this with their healthy cats so they aren't learning when a cat has a bout of inappetance. Not eating for a couple days can start a cat down the road of feline hepatic lipidosis/liver failure. This can happen extremely quickly with some cats and over a period of weeks with less than normal amount of calories. Depending on where in his mouth it is sore - you can use a syringe or even finger feed dollops. Bringing a cat food when they are sleeping - for some reasons some cats eat when they are awoken out of sleep.

Watch for signs of nausea - showing interest in food or just licking it or walking away, hanging over the water bowl, teeth grinding, lip licking/lip smacking.

Hope his appetite has come back since you posted.

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421 Not eating

He is still not eating. I have been waking him up & putting him down beside his food dish....he sniffs & then walks away. I have really smushed his food up - I use a fork to mash the 2 flavors together, then add the water & mix all together. The past few days, he has at least been licking up some water, then overnight he actually ate food, and now he won't eat today for some reason.

Should I try adding in a bit of MC food? He usually goes after that!

I haven't noticed any signs of nausea. They said he might be a bit drooly & some blood may come out of his mouth, but that has not happened. He did have lots of teeth removed - he is now left with 1 incisor on top, and on the bottom he has 6 incisors & 1 canine.

We do have bupe & antibiotics that he is taking. I'm not certain I am getting the bupe into his cheek pocket....but I'm doing my best! I am trying to start stretching his bupe out a bit longer.....at first he was getting it every 8 hours......his last dose today was at AMPS time & I am wanting to delay his next dose for a bit yet.

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421 Not eating

I would say at this point, whatever you can get him to eat would be fine. Eating is top priority. I start to get panicky if they haven't eaten for 12 hrs nailbite_smile So if you think he'll eat the MC, I say give it a shot.

Hi Gwen, no advice from me, just checking on Morris and you. Hope his appetite picks up.

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421 Not eating

Any food you can get into him do it. You don't want DKA or FHL. I am not a dosing advisor though but I'd check for ketones. Someone will be along that can advise on insulin and checking for ketones.

If there is a spot on his mouth that isn't sore, I would get some syringes and start assist feeding. Or try with your finger if he doesn't eat. Its really important over the next couple days to get enough food into him. On the assist feeding forum we recommend getting in a 5.5 oz can of food a day. Some cats need more, like Maverick did.

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421 Not eating

You can also try pure meat baby food - no garlic or onions/spices. One of them is 100 calories a jar and has corn starch. he may love this. The other is less calories. I never remember the two brands. Calories are the key.

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421 Eating!!

I scooped about 1/4 can of MC FF into 1 of the sections in his divided dish on top of the food already in there - He is now eating it all! I'm hoping that once he finnishes that section, he may move onto another section.....will keep you posted!

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421 Eating!!

Great news!!!!!!

I should have mentioned that.... often some cats need their engines primed. Just a few mouthfuls of food will get them eating on their own. So you may have the secret for Morris with the MC. *Dancing*

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421; +9 431 Eating!!

Morris ate almost all the food in the 1 section I added the MC too. He then took a break to prune himself. Then he went to one of his fave chairs to curl up. I then added a little more MC food to another section of his dish & he went and ate most of that up as well! He went to the LB & I was ready to get a ketone test.....but then he didn't go! LOL! I guess he was shy with me watching or something! He is now have a nice little rest.

Should I continue adding the MC with his food for the next few days while his mouth heals?

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421; +9 431 Food quest

If I remember correctly, we consider LC as being 10% or less carbs.....correct? I was just reviewing Janet's list again.....the food I added into Morris' dish this afternoon to get him to eat, is still only 9% carbs! I usually keep his food to under 5% carbs, but should I increase it up to 9% for the next few days until he is eating better?

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421; +9 431 Food quest

The important thing is that he eats - great update  . But I don't know what you do about his blood glucose numbers and dosing. Bumping up for you.

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421; +9 431 Food quest

If Morris will eat his regular LC food, that's fine. If you need to coax him with the 9% and that works, that's fine as well. Whatever it takes to get him to eat. Insulin dose can always be changed to offset the effect of the food, if necessary.

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421; +9 431 Food quest

Hi Gwen,
I think that the jump starting by feeding the mc food was a good idea and you should probably continue feeding what he really likes for a few more days. MC is generally considered to be in the 10% - 14 or 15% range, I think.
Try to test for ketones, and remember that the antibiotics are no doubt affecting his numbers and his appetite (not to speak of the loss of so many teeth!)

Healing vines are on their way,

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421; +9 431; PMPS 385

Have you tried warming the food? Sometimes warming the food just enough to get it a little smelly entices them to eat as well.

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421; +9 431; PMPS 385

Thank you all for your input about my food choices for Mr Morris. I will continue to feed him the MC Fancy Feast mixed with his usualy LC Merrick for the next week or so while his mouth heals. Once I see that he is consistantly eating the majority of his food on a regular basis, I will go back to his usual LC Fancy Feast mixed with LC Merrick.

I have been trying to get a ketone test in.......I was all ready earlier today & he wouldn't pee in front of me! Then, while I was out of the room for a moment, he decided to go! I will continue to monitor him this evening & again tomorrow in an effort to get that test done!

Re: 11/19 Morris AMPS 329; +6 463; +8 421; +9 431; PMPS 385

Good luck. And remember the best food for a kitty is the one it will eat.....this is especially important if they are sick or not feeling well.

Yay for No Ketones!
Keep getting those ketones tests, whenever you can (at least once a day, if possible).
Keep eating up the yummy food, Morris!
