Good morning :)

I'm so outraged!! I discovered why Fistuk's BG rises so high at night. The probiotics I give him has sugar. Why the hell do they need to put sugar in everything????

So last night his BG rose again. It upset me. He looks so good and I just couldn't understand why. Clearly, there was a pattern bc it was rising only at +3 and then he's dropping. But last night he vomited during the night. Liquide but brownish. No food.

Something clicked in my mind bc it reminded me that he had something similar on the night of the 8Th and the thought came - maybe it's the PB???? I resisted the urge to get up at night and check...

Looking back at my notes I saw that he had the same vomit on the night of the 8th which is when I re-started the PB after a break bc we ran out of.

From the notes I see the BG stopped rising again when I stopped PB in order to take a stool sample (instructions asked to stop PB for 24h) and rose again last night when gave him PB.

I took the package out of the fridge with misbelieve checking what's on it. Googling what 'maltose' is I discover it's sugar. My heart breaks I didn't check this before!! I stopped taking what the vet gave us last time bc it had sugar. So she recommended this one--as a way of giving us something without sugar. Anyways. You get the picture!

Now that we know @Gill & George what has changed.... we can go back to Mr green and stop harassing his system.

Going to get a coffee :coffee::coffee::coffee:

Wishing you all a peaceful and cosy Sunday:bighug:

Does anyone know if glycerol is safe for FD?

It's in the AnimalBiome PM.
I could ship it back if it's not open (and it's quite pricey)

Wow wow Shelly. Great detective work!!! Good catch in figuring that out. (Now I’m off to check out bottle of PB too!)
Fistuk looks good on paper today. Hope your blood pressure comes down after all that.
And no coffee later today! :stop:Have a great day :):bighug::)

The product I use is Vetri Science Mega Probiotic. It contain Fructooligosaccharides, which appears to be a form of sweetener. I wonder if this ingredient is a problem? Anyone know? @Gill & George

Sorry to hijack your thread Shelly. I can take this to my own if an issue! I thought maybe we can all learn something.

Thanks everyone. I think @Staci & Ivy it'll be great to keep this conversation here so we can all gather the information from this bc this is a really problem.

From what I gather, PB is a result of fermentation and fermentation creates sugar naturally. It may be that it needs to be looked at product by product to see where the sugar is derived from and what's the proportion.

I will call AnimalBiome @Angela & Cleo. Interestingly I needed to open an account to register the stool before shipping it back to the states and I encountered technical problems. Maybe the universe was taking care of us...

Yes @cecile & bella I gave it to him at night. Now I understand why he gets so crazy about it. He likes very much the S. Bouldarii as well but with this PB he goes crazy.

I think fructose can also be a problem. It is sugar. You may want to track Ivy's BG after giving it and stop for a few day to see what's the difference in BG. After last night I say for certain there's a difference and his sugar spiked only bc of the PB.

@Staci & Ivy I looked it up: it seems safe: Consumption of fructooligosaccharides does not favorably ...National Institutes of Health (.gov)https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov › ...
I found one article that seemed to say glycerol did not increase bg but did increase insulinemia, so maybe it has some effect, even if not directly. I give Bella kefir grains, and kefir, one teaspoon, and she loves it.
I hope Fistuk will give you better numbers now. Did you give him the probiotic only at night?
My husband suggested exactly the same today! that's great

Ok, good detective work Cecile. Glad to hear it seems ok from the NIH.
I give 1 capsule 1 x daily, one week on, one week off.
I don’t think I notice a spike in BG.

Most cats dint have the ability to taste sugar so doubt it’s why he likes that probiotic. Visbiome does not contain sugar in any form. That’s what my two get.
He loves PB for sure. He loes the S. bounldarii as well and that doesn't have sugar
Thanks for the recommendation. It's a pain that it's from the US, it costs me 50 bucks just for shippment.

Wow Shelly.
That's just so tricky!
I wonder why they would put sugar in it? It makes no sense, does it!
Now that the secret's out, I bet he won't have a spike like he did before!
Great work figuring things out!
Why do they put sugar in anything?
Well, yes I'm happy I detected what's wrong and it's easy to fix :bighug::bighug::bighug:

PMPS 79
I feel like a proud mama.

I'm considering taking his dose down. he's been doing so great and now that I know that the spike was just plain sugar I might just do it

oh yes it's just superb :(o_O

It does to a certain extent, from the fermentation process. I think it's the added sugar that is the problem. The PBI used says on the box: maltose filling, which tells me they add sugar

You got me checking my FortiFlora ingredients now for sugar, I don't see any, but I see 5mg of taurine. Now I'm off to research what the hell that might do.

I need a new probiotic, thanks so much for this thread, I always knew there had to be higher quality proboiotics out there I might want to try.

YEs, what Cecile said.... It's an important supplement for cats

Fructooligosaccharides are just chains of sugar that bacteria can break them down to sugars but not digestible to us can’t thus should not cause any rise in blood sugar levels, it’s important in a probiotic :) I’ve always given my dog Fera, seems like a good option if someone is looking for another kind
