Georgia and Simon (GA)

Simon is sick with a cold. He sneezed all last night and is not eating well this morning. I also noticed him drinking more. His AMPS are so high for him. Can a cold cause his bg to be higher than normal? Even though I stopped the steroid ear drops, he really hasn't come back down to his usual numbers. I have some L-lysine that I am trying to give him, but he doesn't like it in his food. Can I put it in a smaller gel cap and give it to him that way instead of sprinkled on the food? Also, I can't remember how much to give him. I have the 500 mg capsules. Do I give 1/2 that amount twice a day?

Another question: Regarding strips. Has anyone ever had strips give an error message but be perfectly fine when tested on humans? I was running out of the countour strips I usually buy and used the back-up meter, True test with true result strips. I had a brand new bottle of strips (not expired) but every strip is giving me an error message when I use it on Simon. I tested them on myself, and they are fine. What is up with that??

I'm just a little worried about Simon. He is more quiet this morning and just sitting around. He ate about 1/2 of his usual amount of food. He just had bloodwork done at the vet and a urinalysis, and everything was fine.

Thanks for listening to my lengthy condo...I don't mean to sound like a big complainer!

Re: 11/17 Simon AMPS 280 advice please

I have no answers for any of your questions Georgia, so I feel pretty useless. I hope Simon starts feeling better soon. It's so hard to see them down.

Re: 11/17 Simon AMPS 280 advice please

Hi Georgia, oh poor Simon with the cold. I hope some here soon weigh in on the high bg and cold. I wonder if the steroid drops meds could still be in his system and causing the higher bg's. How long ago did you stop them? With the strips, it's very strange why you would get an error message on Simon and not on you. I've gotten error messages on a few bad strips in a bottle from time to time. Vines and positive thoughts for Simon to feel better and his appetite. Hugs.

Re: 11/17 Simon AMPS 280 advice please

I'm sorry I can't really answer your questions, just offer hugs. I hope Simon feels better soon...poor little guy.

Re: 11/17 Simon AMPS 280 advice please

I would probably check with your vet. This could be a upper respiratory infection and need more treatment than just L-lysine. If a kitty isn't feeling well, especially if there's an infection, BG numbers could be higher.

I'd also warm up Simon's food a bit or add bonito flakes or anything that will make his food more smelly. It sounds like he's not smelling well and that may be effecting his appetite.

I don't know what to tell you with the strips.

Re: 11/17 Simon AMPS 280 advice please

I'm sending tons of healing vines and positive thoughts for Simon. I wish for him to make a full and speedy recovery. Hang in there, lil buddy. :YMHUG:

Re: 11/17 Simon AMPS 280 advice please

sorry to hear Simon isn't well. He might need a round of AB's. I use lysine in a tube and just smear it on their tongues. Hope you get to the bottom of it and he feels better quickly.

Re: 11/17 Simon AMPS 280 advice please

Thanks for the words of support, everyone!

Sienne, you may be right about the upper respiratory problem. I'll call Simon's vet today to see what he thinks.

Iorwen, where do you get the lysine gel?

Re: 11/17 Simon AMPS 280 +3 151

Ok, the +3 is quite a big drop from the AMPS. Simon is definitely trying to confuse me today. I did get the strips to work on the new bottle I just bought. I guess some of the strips are defective. I hate spending lots of money on strips to find that some of them are defective. Simon ate a few pieces of dried chicken so maybe he can taste a little something through his cold. I will try to entice him with good old FF to see if he will eat that since he is turning his nose up at Wellness today.

Ann, Simon has been off the ear drops for 8 days so I am thinking it is out of his system by now, although maybe there are a few last residual drops in there causing his higher numbers?

Poor Simon! I hope it is just a cold, but yucko. That was a nice recovery at +3. I hope he get to feeling better soon and starts eating more like himself. ((((Georgia)))) You never sound like a whiner. Now me on the other hand.

Will the company replace the strips?

It's 500mg of lysine twice a day and will only help if its not a URI. It couldn't hurt to start this though could it? I don't know anything about URIs though.

Hugs to you guys.

Re: 11/17 Simon PMPS 205

I am bringing Simon in tomorrow to the vet to get checked out. I called his vet and he said that since Simon is diabetic, it will probably be wise to have him checked out instead of just putting him on an antibiotic without seeing him.

Simon's congestion sounds pretty bad, but he ate all of his dinner tonight. He is definitely moving a little slower and I can tell he isn't feeling well.
