okay, change of plan. We're now going to University of Florida - and I feel much better.
After reading Jess' post last night I decided that I needed to check this out myself rather than depend on my vet and the cardiologist.
I figured I could get more done with their help... but honestly, I don't think anyone even checked with U of F! :-x :-x

I just called them up and made an appt. - without a referral - and there was no problem! (grrr... why didn't I just do that to begin with?)
He's seeing the Internal Medicine vet on Thursday and they will do whatever diagnostics I want.
I was told that it may take more than one day to get everything done (but maybe not) so DH is taking of Thurs and Fri.

Oh! And here's some more good news -- I just realized that it's really only about a 4.5 hour drive rather than 5.5 - because I was just going on memory and adding in the time change- but Google maps is smarter than me! so yay!

Bad news is I think my daughter is getting sick - coughing and feverish. :(

Sorry for the cough, but hope it's something minor.

I am glad for your trip and hope that the results are informative.

Yay! I feel better knowing you're going to the U of F - going to a human facility would make me a little nervous in this case. I wonder why it might take more than one day... Maybe it's a matter of scheduling time for the CT and whatever...

Anyway - that's good news!

yes, the only reason it might take longer is if they have an emergency or scheduling problems. (since we don't know exactly what they'll want to do) She said it was unlikely that it would take 2 days - but that we should be prepared just in case.

As for the human facility - I thought it was odd...but when I started asking questions this morning, I was like Nooo No No No...
I was told that they would anesthetize him at the vet hospital and then the vet and tech would drive him over to the human facility for the scan.
Seriously! So not letting them do that!

I'm so glad Jess posted her ideas - she's absolutely wonderful. Hugs, kisses, and prayers for you guys.

:o  :o

So glad you're going to U of F too!

and ... hmm ... I took Meowzi to her cardiologist and radiologist without referrals. I just made sure when I made the appt that the specialists would be available and willing to talk to our primary vet if he has questions later, and that they'll send copies of their report to both me and him, so we're all on the same page re: dx and tx. Never had a problem with them insisting on referrals before, as long as I have her medical history (get a copy of Doodle's vet chart, if you haven't yet) and bloodwork (we all know I'm obsessed about those!). If you have x-rays and documentation of anything that's already done, bring them too. And your video recording.

eta: hope little Brielle feels better soon.

I guess this is mostly my own fault - I thought I needed a referral.
I was stressing and whining that no one would help us -- when really all I had done was call the two local places and trust my vet to be doing the rest.
And I guess she was getting all her info from the scaredy cat cardiologist (ya know... the one who wants to drive around town with Doodle knocked out in her back seat)

Anyway, lessons learned. If you want something done( and you are capable) - do it yourself -- and don't take no for an answer.

I'm picking up records tonight- x-rays, echos, ultrasounds, bloodwork, everything.

--- And Brielle is running a fever now of 102.2

Don't beat yourself up over this Michelle - it is only natural to think that a phone call from a vet is going to carry some weight and grease the wheels and help you get in somewhere. You were smart to take this on yourself and look how quickly things are falling into place.

very best wishes for success on Thursday with Doodlebug and get well wishes for Brielle. you've got your hands full.

(((Michelle & Doodle))) We are sending good wishes that things go well for you.....this is really so much better! Good job Michelle!
And here is the link to yesterday in case anyone wants to read what Jess wrote...she is the BEST!!

We will be thinking of you and praying too....hope your DD feels better real soon....

Oh I feel so much better about that. I would actually plan to stay overnight, because they may want to keep him overnight if they anesthetize him and it's later in the day, or if they take a biopsy and want to watch him, etc. Remember to take copies of all your papers, bloodwork, and x-rays. Ask your vet and the specialists you've seen to fax and email everything ASAP to the internist you're seeing on Thursday so s/he can review it before you get there. You can email the video, too, just call tomorrow and say you'll be seeing Dr. So&So and your vet needs an email address where she can send x-rays, etc. Then use the address yourself to send the video (I wouldn't add anything to it, like the history, etc., since you'll speak to him/her in person about everything).

When you call, you can say your cat is expected to have anesthesia that day and is diabetic and on several medications, can someone call you back to let you know if you can feed him, etc. If I recall correctly, his meds are all vital (spironolactone, amlodipine, K+, insulin) and shouldn't be skipped anyway, but I don't know what they'll say about feeding time. Our vets usually have parts of the day X'd out for procedures so they should have some idea of when they plan to do anesthesia that day.

My coworker from FL wasn't working today but she'll be there tomorrow. If you PM me the name of the internist I'll ask her for the DL info :)

so happy to hear that doodle will be going to UF.
as for :

guess this is mostly my own fault - I thought I needed a referral.

please don't beat yourself up over this. I would of thought the same thing b/c here you can't get an appt. w/ most specialists ( any that we've seen anyways-- and that's quite a few) w/o a referral. they just won't do it.
I'm glad UF is not of that mindset . and it worked out in the end.

will keep sending good vibes for doodles and hoping that Brielle is feeling much better.
