11/16 DoDo Dropped off at Vet Hospital

Well...

my OCD is in high gear right about now.

My very least favorite vet tech was the one on duty and checked us in--- I am sure she is good at her job with animals but the lady just has no social skills with people. She just rubs me wrong.

I had to pay a deposit tonight of $400.00 (my vet had explained I was just doing medical boarding but the ER vet on duty wrote up a normal hospitalization ranging from $400-$600 depending on what needs to be done i.e. if they have to feed him through his feeding tube, etc.)

They are not planning on testing him again tonight since he was 304 3+ post PM shot.

And then that makes me just all anxious. *lol*

Then I start worrying will surly vet tech put his happy sock in his kennel with him? :(

I can't wait to talk to my vet tomorrow.

I made them my sliding scale chart, but if they are not going to test him more often without upping the costs (apparently the medical boarding fee covers monitoring, daily check with a vet, bandage change, feeding, insulin shots, PMPS, and AMPS testing) and if they do more glucose checks during the day the fee could be 100.00 per day which is okay-- I don't really care about that. I just want to have a little bit more of an idea of what they will do for him. And if they are not going to test as often as me (which I think I test a lot) maybe I would prefer them to not go but so high in his units, etc.

I think I just need to get some rest and trust that these are the same folks who helped him thrive so fast with his DKA and post DKA. It just stinks to not know exactly how my little fellow is doing.

Look you are in a difficult position. The vet will never take as good of your kitty as you would. Honestly it sounds to me like you took WAY care of the details! Good for you. I'm a little "detail oriented" like that too :-D . So I think you have done a superb job given the material you have been dealt. I'm not sure there is anything you can change at this point. So go kick some butt and take some names in Boston - right?

Your spread sheet is awesome--you have one lucky cat! I know how hard it must be to leave your kitty when you are so dedicated to taking care of him. But since you really don't have a choice, and you did all you could to make it right, and that's all that can be asked. Hope all goes well!
 
It looks like you did the best you could do. The vet won't do ss good a job as you, but I'm sure dodo will do just fine there. Have a great trip!
 
You have done a great job planning and preparing. DoDo is in good hands.

Remember you can always call the clinic and check in anytime you want. It will reassure you.

Hi everyone

I am going to get this in before I get some sleep. Thankfully, I will get more than 3 hours tonight! After sitting in meetings all day and then doing the requisite work dinner, I am ecstatic about finishing up some personal things and getting to bed early.

My mom visited DoDo today. She said he is active (they put him in a visiting room with her). She told me that they are tube feeding him since he seems a little agitated about being at the vet although they moved him into a more quiet area. She said they apologized for the condition of his cage when she saw it-- he had just tipped over his water and shredded his puppy mats and bedding. My mom laughed and said that is not abnormal for DoDo-- he will shred her toilet paper to bits if we are late with feeding or giving him treats. He will also tip over his bowls when frustrated.

She asked for them to make sure to give him his happy sock and she said when she said goodbye to him he immediately went to his sock to cuddle with it and pretty much ignored her. So I am glad the nice vet techs were there and not the cold one.

His AMPS was 170 today-- they gave him 2.00units although I would have only given him 1.5units. They have a copy of my dosing table and his spreadsheets, but my vet is the one that gave that requirement.... just makes me nervous. I am hoping he is not too high tonight. I don't know how often they are checking him at night either so I get so obsessed thinking he could hypo... even though I guess I realize that is not happening, but still.

I think I will call them within the hour just to check on him.

We always ask that when our Coons are boarded/hospitalized that they use a large dog water bowl. The Maine Coons by general rule are fascinated with water. They paddle in it and mess round with their water so much that they will totally make a mess of any cat sized bowl. If you frame it in a concept they can understand "dog water bowl" changes are they can make that sort of accommodation.

Gator that is a good idea so I think I will definitely bring it up in my call this morning!

Thanks again everyone for helping keep me grounded. I was so afraid that when I went to sleep last night I would get some call that would say-- he is in a coma!!! We gave him way too much insulin, etc etc etc.

I can't wait to get back home and see my little fellow that is for sure!
 
Well I just talked to the hospital to get an idea of my bill.

They are having to talk to the charge administrator tomorrow.

It looks like they are charging me 17.00 for each insulin injection.

I was told by my vet that the 70.00 fee for 24 hours includes medicating him if I were to bring my own needles, insulin, and antibiotics.

So I see now where they are coming up with the 400.00.

The staff person tonight is going to speak with the charges coordinator tomorrow since she thought this was incorrect as well. Hopefully all of those 34.00 fees will come off.

I mean, if they dont with me bringing in my own stuff-- it would seem ridiculous for me to have even brought in my own Prozinc and syringes considering that he was charged the 17.00 for each insulin injection while he was in the hospital with DKA and that was including the cost of their medication (drugs, needle, etc).

I told her we could talk about it on Friday-- then I hope they will end up removing what amounts to just shy of 120.00 off of my bill. I mean it is not like they haven't gotten over 5k before the boarding from me in the first place.
