11/16 Bast mess of a day- Help, need opinions please

I thought if he dipped again He needed an OTJ trial. There is confusion on how big a dose he has been on. I kept thinking it was .10 but now I wonder if it was less after I tested with some milk. I was up all night again and honestly not very rashional this morning. I was asking for help/opinions all night but no one was on. I picked a bad night to be in a quandry. ohmygod_smile

I had to leave for work and knew I could not come home until late so I did skip the shot this morning. It was too much pressure and I broke. I was terrified he would dip while at work and he would be gone when i came home. (Pms and sleep deprevation are not a good combo) Too much crying and not enough sanity this morning by me.

he was at 110 when i left for work after eating. When i came home at apx +9.5 he is 138. i don't know if this is a bounce from yesterday or bad or good.
so now where do we go? He is perky and purr-y. He seemed to have eaten almost all his food. He is sitting on my shoulder while I type this watching out the window.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

It's ok...he didn't have a mess of a day! I know you are tired, stressed out, etc. I don't think you were not rational.

I know you were disappointed when Sienne and I said it didn't quite look like he was ready for a trial. In order for a strong remission, we like them to stay on the insulin until they have some back to back green cycles with a little blue in normal numbers. Bast looks great but I just don't think he looks as good as some of the other kitties that have gone OTJ.

You have a couple options. One is to continue shooting as little insulin as you can but feed him a higher LOW carb food. That allows you to get that insulin in him without him dropping so much....we hope.

The other option is to do a food trial. That's where you do not shoot insulin but you test him at his normal shot times, then feed, then test 3-4 hours later to see if he's bringing his BG down on his own. It is not an official OTJ trial. He might do ok or he might show you that he still needs some insulin.

Look at Wendy's Baileys SS. He's down to the same dose and got low but it's evident he's not ready for a trial. Bast looks better but I think he could look even better.

He is so so close. I agree with marge... Doesn't look like he is quite ready yet. Both her options look interesting to try... Not sure how much 0.1iu is... Have you tried my empty syringe dose? See bailey but basically I fill the syringe with maybe one unit and empty it again. Thenwhen I inject the empty syringe with a firm couple of presses it dispenses one single drop. Don't know if that's less than you have now but might be worth playing witha syringe and water to see if you can get less tha 0.1iu.
 
I was thinking of the one drop measurement- what if i pull A small amount into one needle. then pull the plunger out of another and add two drops, put the plunger back in =burp the air and a single drop, leaving 1 drop in the sringe.

I am over thinking this aren't I?
 
ok now i am really confused
It is almost his normal Pm shot and he is down to 90! That is a good number

I was tring to figure a 1 drop dose by using another needle to measure the drop
 
He probably still has some depot...it wouldn't have entirely drained.

The other thing with what you are thinking is it is really hard to shoot one or two drops from one syringe into another. The insulin hangs on the inside of the barrel and you get a ton of air.
 
If you do a one drop dose that is the same as you've been doing, you will need to feed him a higher low carb food to keep him from dropping too low.

Or if you can figure out how to shoot just a tiny bit of insulin, that would be good.

I won't be able to stay up but you've handled low numbers. Sorry but it looks like its going to be a sleep test night for me so I need to grab some sleep when I can.

You're welcome. I'm sorry...even when Gracie is not coming down, I'm usually up at least twice feeding Gus.

Hope you have a nice, flat night. And remember...you do have the other option of not shooting and trying the food trial. It's up to your comfort zone.
 
i have to leave for 3 weeks on christmas day and i admit I really would like him to be under control by then. Either a regulated dose or OTJ. So did 1 drop tonight
 
This looks like a great cycle. I know it's nerve wracking for you but when you get to this stage, there's a bit of needing to play things by ear.

You know...as Sienne said, we'll have to play this by ear but once in a while, we have a cat like Fitzel, for instance, where the caregiver has to go to either SID dosing or just giving a shot when the kitty needs it. It's not the ideal situation......we'd rather just see Bast go OTJ.

Just keep shooting as you are doing and let's see where it takes him. I'm hoping the consistency of a really low dose every 12 hours will encourage that pancreas to start doing it's job. Paws crossed.
