Chugging along here. Slept in bed last night, first time since Monday 🎉
Ivy’s had some drastic dips at night this week which caused me to stay close overnight to monitor.

We will be repeating labs on 11/26 to see how she’s doing on the dose of Methimazole pills and if it gets her to a better T4 level and shows true picture of kidneys.
Nervous about all that plus she just hates going for labs 😭

Have you tried or looked into the transdermal cream? I've had 2 HT kitties and the second used the cream. Not even in her ears, but I shaved a spot behind her neck to give it, as she had regular polyp growths in both ears. It was so much easier on her than the pills, and this way it didn't effect her liver at all. Just wanted to throw that out there.

yes, we had been using transdermal Methimazole since diagnosis, over 1.5 years but couldn’t get her back in the normal range T4. We kept increasing her dose and I finally caved in and agreed to try the pills.
(I’d much prefer to use transdermal given the possibility of GI complications). But it just wasn’t working.
The thyroid group suggested trying a more concentrated dose if I go back to the transdermal again, which I would look into.

I would be opposed to shaving a spot as you did, too, since you couldn’t use the ears.
How did your kitty do on the transdermal?
Did she have a bad reaction to the pills?

Haha, she’s got it down to an art. She’s so comfy. You’d never know 5 minutes before she was screaming at me as I carried her upstairs to her throne 👑

I never even tried the pills with her. She had these bluish polyps that would grow on the inside of her ears. On the left ear suspected one to be cancerous.:(
I belonged to the cat HT board on Facebook, where someone they did this. So I did some research to find where it was thinnest between the epidermis & the dermis. I searched since veterinarian texts to find the info, and turns out the flea prevention companies had it right all along. Behind the head to between their shoulders. It's the best place and where they can't lick it off.
Unlike my 1st fella that the vets told me to start at the highest, I listened to the board that said start at the lowest. After 6weeks we came back in for blood work and had to raise the morning dose just slightly while leaving the evening dose. That was the trick.
She was diagnosed at what we suspect (took her in from the streets pregnant) 17yrs old. And I'm glad I never had the radioactive iodine treatment for her. Had a lot of people push me towards it, but this was a cat with pretty bad ibd that led to scl gi 4yrs previously, and lived in one section of the house with no other cats. She didn't like them, they didn't like her. So she had a bathroom, halfway, and 2 bedrooms all to herself with a lexan door we gave her to see us and let us know when she wanted attention or to eat. She was very particular and would only eat if it was fresh and you say there too watch her do get nifty 'trick'.🙄 And she ate 8x a day. Luckily she was always one of my favorites. But she wouldn't have done well locked in a kennel for at least 4/5 days. I'm sure most do great. But she actually refused to eat without an audience. And as it were, skin cancer was her downfall 6mo after diagnosis. So as much as I spend on these guys, I would've been passed had I spent at least 2,500 on it & caused her all that stress.
I used my husband's electric razor and was just very careful when buzzing her every few weeks. She even got used to it

Great advice.
With Ivy it just seems she wasn’t absorbing it from the cream.
And I was told the ears are pretty thin and should absorb it there.
Seems some cats just don’t absorb properly 😭
I also joined the Facebook HT group and agree there is lots of good information on there.
I also started the dose very low with the transdermal and we worked our way up over time to try to get a better hold of the T4. But last month it just went up again and my vet. We were just chasing the number and not really getting anywhere with the transdermal.

In some ways, I would love to do the I131 with her, but I really don’t think she would be a good candidate.
She’s a terrible patient will not tolerate being handled and I don’t think she would eat on her own without my encouragement while left at the facility for several days. Also, I don’t think they would be able to handle feeding her multiple snacks throughout her cycle after giving insulin and making sure she eats it so she does not dive with her BG.
(I monitor her very closely with a Libre sensor because she will not tolerate being poked many times a day).

Ivy makes treating her conditions very difficult. She’s a very tough patient 😭

So sorry you have to deal with going in for labs again. 😞 Hopefully the results will have been worth it when it comes back improved!! 🤞🏻
