For almost a month we have good, bad, and very bad days. Last night Chanel was in pain to the point where my husband thought someone is beating some drums...that was her breathing.
I loaded her up on Bupre, Gaba, Amoxy (she loves the cherry suspension, licking it out of the syringe). It seems that it was yet another kidney crisis. I had to give her a tbps of the c/d food. Yes, I know it is very high in carbs, but I need to find a way to balance her life and maybe avoid her having the crisis like last night.
@Jackie and Biggie I know that maybe we need to look for a second opinion. Only that Chanel gets panic attacks that now change into asthma attacks even when I get dressed to go to the grocery store. We postponed the dental cleaning because her doctor wants her to recover and become stable.
What would an internal medicine practitioner would do more than her usual vet? I am asking because I am confused, with so many tests I wonder what was left to be tested.

Oh im so sorry your kitty is going through this :( how very awful for you as well. I dont know anything about nutrition for kidmey stones ( except for LOTS of liquids) but food for ckd cats... there are very many. Lmk if low phosphorus for kidney disease is what you are looking for.

She has kidney stones, not bladder stones. Unfortunately, I am not able to find any food options that would work for a diabetic cat, dissolve the kidney stones that Chanel would like. The doctor did x-ray and ultrasound, and pretty much lots of tests, of course the usual blood work as well. Everything came back normal, except her urine pH of 8.5, struvite crystals and glucose in urine (first time for Chanel), and the kidney stones.

It might be worth posting to the health forum asking about diet suggestions for kidney stones and urinary crystals. The struvite urinary crystals can be dissolved with prescription diet, so it might be worth putting her on the wet prescription diet regardless of carb content so they can dissolve and her pain can finally go away, and then put her on a diet that it good at preventing the stones (low magnesium and phosphate). I don’t know anything about kidney stones but if the same is true for the special diet being able to dissolve them, then it might be worth going that route and controlling her bg with insulin while you work on her kidney and bladder health.
A rescue friend of mine who did a lot of research in animal nutrition created a list of foods that are under 10% carbs and good for preventing urinary crystals in cats. Here is the list: https://docs.google.com/document/d/...Hpoyj8HJWZNRCSL59yhKtUsBG_9Pn4MpLsw50823OpfdE

I’m glad you had some good days! I’m so sorry that she has had many bad ones though. Poor girl! I suggested a good diagnostician with internal medicine specialty because it seemed like her diagnoses were all over the map- with pancreatitis and urinary issues etc…but if there is a concrete diagnosis of kidney stones and urinary crystals, it sounds to me like the pain from that could be mimicking asthma or potentially inducing asthma. I would probably want to talk to a specialist just to confirm all of the diagnoses and to get a second set of ideas of what to do since it seems like things aren’t working. Maybe they can offer a better plan to help. I’m so sorry for what you both are going through. I hope she can get some relief soon. :bighug:

@tiffmaxee did you mention a urine acidifier additive that could be put in food to take the place of the urinary prescription diets for diabetic cats? I don’t know if they’d help for the kidney stones but I think the urinary crystals and kidney stones are sometimes related. Chanel has both.
