Yesterday..

This is the start of the 3rd cycle at 6.0u and he's getting even hungrier, if that is possible - his numbers are definitely higher now at each end of each cycle.

While Cathy's back was turned, he just stole a piece of bread from out of the toaster (that she'd put in the slot ready for our breakfast) - and before she spotted him he'd eaten a one inch strip that he'd torn off. Ever heard of a cat eating BREAD before? And he'd only just finished a whole 3oz can of FF.... minutes before...

Other than that, he's OK this AM, and I'm off the the Vet in a minute to go talk about Acromegaly and switching him over to Lev.

Will update you later!

Today: AMPS 295 +3 242 +5 240 PMPS 242

Re: 10/14 Sooty AMPS 295

LOL that is funny! Sure, they consider everything theirs, even what you tell them is NOT for them.

How's his weight? Why not just feed him more, but keep a watch on his weight. I try to weigh my guys on the weekends, step on my scale with a cat then without a cat. Sadly I have to see my own weight, but I also get an idea of the cats' weights too for tracking.

If Sooty is eating but not gaining, then try more food and see if he's appeased. How much are you feeding him each day at the moment? What about spreading out the food ... give half the can now, then the other half in 30min or something - same amount, just spread out.

Good luck at the vet.

Re: 10/14 Sooty AMPS 295

Boo says Sooty is a smart boy and that being a cat burglar is a good thing.

Re: 10/14 Sooty AMPS 295

I had a Meezer that used to steal bread - of all things, why bread?

I've always been amazed that Sooty packs away the groceries without packing on the pounds - guess we know why now. don't know much about acros but Heather and Gayle sure do, you are in good hands.

so feed that hungry cat burglar.

Re: 10/14 Sooty AMPS 295

I had a kitty that grabbed a loaf of bread and took bites out of 10 pieces one day when no one was home....
but for a sugar baby, that is not so strange, is it? Bread...Ha...no need to toast it Mama, I can eat it just like it is!!!!
Glad you are going to look into Levemir...we love it!!

Re: 10/14 Sooty AMPS 295

Perry...my cats will eat anything...Gracie and Gus LOVE corn and peas (but don't get it), Tobey is a bottomless pit!! Bread does not surprise me at all.

I keep constant track of everyone's weight because I have two older renal insufficient kitties, Gracie, and then the little guy. Here's the scale I bought and I LOVE it!!
Looks like it is on sale now...it measures to the oz which is good when weighing kitties. I can put it on my counter top at weigh in time and they all sit on it just fine:

Hope you will get some good info from the vet. Good luck!!

Re: 10/14 Sooty AMPS 295

I hope you get what you want at the vet, Perry. That is so funny about the bread! At least it didn't have jelly on it. BTW, Are you time traveling today? The 14th is tomorrow. :o

Re: 11/13 Sooty AMPS 295 +3 242

10/14 - hmmmm... ! I was in a bit of a hurry but then again, maybe I was time traveling! Sorry, gang!

Thanks for the suggestions on the food, hmmm maybe we should just put him on bread and water, until he changes his ways? :?: :?: :?:

Gayle he's on about 21oz/day right now. We are spreading it out as much as we can. Marjorie, thanks for the scales info, looks good we might order one. All, thanks for all your good humor! I'm only sorry I haven't visited other condos more...

Anyhow, about the Vet visit, she was very frank about it all... we are now no longer "in her league" (as she put it) although she (quite correctly!) said that in a way, nothing really changes (it's still Insulin vs. BGs). But about Acro, she wants to talk to an endocrinologist and do a little more research. Fair enough!

She thought that BGs in the 200s is fine though and was a bit surprised when I said that we are looking to get him into the 100s (blues, here), but then, Vets do tend to think that 200s are OK (as we all know, from their point of view, esp. for non-home-testing patients, where 200s really are "safer"...)

She's not familiar wi\th Levemir at all, but I gave her a copy of the Lantus vs. Levemir document and the Levemir Prescription guide from the Levemir website. I found myself thinking I was teaching granny to suck eggs but anyhow, I quickly gave her the explanation as to the differences, how Lev doesn't precipitate out and sit there at the injection site under the skin, like Lantus does, but makes its way from the sub-q depot into the bloodstream first and then, takes its sweet time to be absorbed from there... and yes she HAD heard about the Lantus / Tumor talk. I also explained that Lev. solution is pH neutral (where Lantus is pH4 acidic) and that Lev. is therefore, kinder to inject (esp. at the high doses we may need now.) I can't see there is going to be any objection, once she looks into it, so I so think our next Rx will be for Lev.

OK that's about it! Hope y'all have a great weekend - sending all good vibes and wishes to all our sugarcats and beans - esp. those worse off than we are.

Re: 11/13 Sooty AMPS 295 +3 242 +5 240

It sounds like you have a good vet, that's willing to learn along with you.
When I first asked for a prescription for Levemir, my vet asked me "how do you spell that?". He's a self proclaimed "PZI man". I think I'm his only client that doesn't use PZI. Probably the only one who home tests, too

I bought this infant scale and weigh my cats about every month. That way, I don't have to see my own weight

Re: 11/13 Sooty AMPS 295 +3 242 +5 240

Thanks for the links for scales - will order one... I just did the 'weigh me with & without the cat' trick and Sooty's about 15.5 lbs. A tad heavier than last we weighed him but not by much at all. We just don't know where he is putting all the food! Maybe acros have hollow legs? :?

Re: 11/13 Sooty AMPS 295 +3 242 +5 240

Glad you finally got your results. Hope the vet continues to work with you. Sooty is in good hands, you are doing great dealing with his diabetes and now acro. Glad you found the Board support here helps.

Amen to that (your last sentence!) - in Spades !!! No way we could have gotten here, without you guys - We shall forever be in debt to the amazing people who give so much of their time on here so unselfishly. Yikes... listen to me will you....

Re: 11/13 Sooty AMPS 295 +3 242 +5 240

Don't worry about the vet going along with you on all of this crazy stuff like mega testing and using human insulins, and getting down to the 100s .... Once your vet sees your numbers and how you are tracking everything on the ss, if the vet is decent, you should have no resistance.
I take my ss to the vet on every single visit and leave a copy. That way, my vet can take a look at the numbers later on and see exactly what we are doing.
And yes, in many ways, you are educating your vet, which in turn helps the next kitty who shows up at your vet office with diabetes.

Can relate to that, I wish more vets would realize that hometesting can really save lives. Maybe we'll get there, one cat, one vet at a time!

Re: 11/13 Sooty AMPS 295 +3 242 +5 240

just checking in to see how you and Sooty are doing today. I have to have the Lantus vs. Lev conversation with my vet too, probably on Monday. I primed the pump and gave her some info on Lev. when Jazzy was first diagnosed, but she wanted to give Lantus a little while first. Fair enough, but now I'm out of refills on Lantus so I would like to try Lev. If she tries to say no, I'll tell her that Jazzy jumps away from her shots and I think Lantus is stinging her (she doesn't usually jump away from her shots, but she did once today so it's not a lie).

We're doing fine, thanks Libby! Thanks for asking. I hope you and Lucy (eta: and Jazzy!) are, too.

I agree with you though, and oddly enough, when I gave Sooty his 6u tonight, he really flinched. Must have hurt! (Usually he doesn't react much at all). OK sometimes, you do hit something that hurts, you just can't help it (and I always warm up the shot, in the syringe between my 1st and 2nd fingers before I shoot him) and I have nothing against Lantus but I don't see any downsides, from where I sit, to switching to Lev (that for sure, at least, doesn't sting...!) The acro beans all seem to agree that at some of the doses they are at, that is a big deal...
