Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Don't you love the way our kitties surprise us?

Get a +1 and a +2. It will tell you in which direction Maverick's numbers are going. If he's bouncing, no worries. If not, you can leave a ton of food out. Depending on where his numbers are, you can decide on whether to leave out LC or higher.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

So get a +1 and +2 without a 1.0 unit shot or give him 1.0 units and then get a +1 and +2?

Thanks!!!

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Tricky Maverick...He's been looking awfully good though.

Maverick....eat your food while your bean is gone....And stay safe big boy.

I think Sienne was assuming you had already shot. I would do that, though. Shoot and get +1 and +2 and figure out food accordingly. It sounds like you'll only be gone for a couple of hours, right?

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Thanks guys.

I'm still a little nervous. Do I feed him higher carb food now - (fancy feast chicken in gravy) - might not be the same as your guys FF in the US. Or mix it in with his regular special kitty turkey and giblets?

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

If I feed him low carb food now, he most likely won't be interested in the higher carb if I need him to eat it and I'd have to assist feed him - which I may not have time for. Do I withhold food so he's hungry when I need him to eat? I could leave out kibble which he hasn't had in a while.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

if you're nervous, you can feed him a little higher carb food for breakfast. This is almost the same number you shot yesterday morning, and he surfed blue all day.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Good point!!! Guess those greens just hit me unexpectedly. Just like the blues came out of nowhere only two days ago. I am nervous cause I won't be home. I'm trying to keep away a migraine too. Not sure if I will get lucky there.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Not to worry--A cat will eat when it feels it's bg dropping--Moonie has proved it to me time & time again..You are doing great!!

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Just a quick pop in to say I thought you did well last night - such great numbers for maverick. it is nice to see him with blues and greens. Good luck today. Food is your friend, and I am sure he will do just fine. They do know when they need to eat. I hope you feel better too.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Keep in mind, the +1 will give you some idea of where the cycle is going and whether to feed some higher carb food.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

I gave him 1.5oz of higher carb food for peace of mind. i'll test +1 now and post an update. Are most people this nervous? I guess I just expected things to go slowly not responding this quickly. I was really comfortable with slow lol

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

I can't thank you guys enough for holding my hand.

So I did get really spooked and wanted to err on the side of caution because I won't be home in the morning. So it was for my peace of mind.

At +.50 I gave him 1.5oz of higher carb food - Canadian Fancy Feast Chicken feast in gravy. He loved it. I haven't seen him eat wet food with such a ghusto ever.

His +1 number did jump to 172. My question to you guys is (I know you will need the +2 to be sure but it will be a bit earlier than +2 - probably+1.75) will this be enough to keep him a bit higher while I'm gone? Should I leave out the high carb or low carb? I think it would be safe to leave out just low carb.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

your next test number at +1.75 will be good....you could do a mix of LC and a bit of MC or HC if you dont have any MC (medium carb by the way) but let's see what the next number says...and what others can add to that.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

good morning Karrie - you could always leave out both, sounds like he'll go for the gravy, who wouldn't? we can see what his +1.75 is. I would just leave out LC but Shadow and I have been doing this a while. I don't want you to be worried while you are gone and we all want Maverick to be safe - how much longer before you have to leave?

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

I am here for another 25 minutes.

I think the high carb would be peace of mind for me too. I doubt he would drop to a true low but these last two days have been a little disconcerting. Expected blips of blues and greens not surfing already ;) I really think it was the switch to walmart special kitty turkey and giblet from presidents choice turkey and giblets. He started responding right away.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Good luck! I'd leave out what makes you feel comfortable. At least then you won't worry so much - you'll know he will be safe. Enjoy your time out. :-D

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Karrie, he is responding beautifully! Everybody is nervous when they start to see green...it's scary and exciting all at once! You will get used to it. ;-) You're doing great!

I agree with leaving what makes you feel comfortable. If that +1.75 goes up, you will see that the HC really gives him a boost, so maybe mix some with the LC. You'll be back by +5, right?

I hope you can keep that migraine away!

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Migraine is starting to subside so I think I took the medication in time. Getting a refill on my way home just in case. Thanks guys.

He went up to 183. I know I could leave out just low carb but just in case - I did mix in the low carb with the high carb. If I was home all day he wouldn't even have been given any high carb food. I'm sure everything would have been fine otherwise. Just peace of mind for me :(

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Greens are good, but scary! Maybe Maverick wants to move to the land of greens! Good luck Maverick!!!

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

No frowning, peace of mind is very important! We all use higher carb foods to manipulate the numbers, it's perfectly fine to do that. Keeping him safe and you not worrying while you're gone is most important. It's a good opportunity to see how he does with the higher carbs....data gathering is good! Enjoy your time out today. :-D

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

I'm back. Thanks everyone for their help and advice. He was 208 when I got home.
What typically happens when you give a cat high carb food? Does it impact their numbers somehow over the next day or two? What can I expect?

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

Unless you're feeding dry, the HC will be gone in an hour or so. It's why you need to monitor carefully when you're cat's in low numbers. You feed gravy, numbers come up, then the gravy wears off.

When you have a chance, can you take the "help" out of your subject line?

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 - not home all day help

yea, that was a good round!
hc kepted him safe while you were out, as Laurie posted earlier.

hope you're feeling better!

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135

this is the kind of data you can refer to down the line and the comments section of your SS is a great place to make some notes about he's done today, what you fed, how he responded and so on. valuable intel.

Exactly! This is an opportunity to gather data for the future.

Re: 11/13 Maverick - AMPS 135 PMPS 165.6 (drop from today)

Summary from our night last night:

Summary from our day today:
AMPS 135
+1 172.8 (Half hour after high carb food - worried about him dropping too much while I was away)
+2 183.6 Left him a mix of high carb and low carb food. He didn't seem to have eaten much while I was away.
+5 208.8 Took away HC food and left down LC food. He's only eaten about an ounce of that since.

PMPS 165.6

So the high carb messed up the normal trend of down until at least +5 and then up.

Not sure what tonight will bring. I will test at +2.

Regarding the insulin syringe. I think I've been messing up a bit. There is always a small bubble that stays in the syringe. Tonight I pulled a bit too fast and a bigger bubble formed. So I pulled back more insulin, flicked the syringe and pushed out the air bubble. That left a very very tiny bubble. So that would mean more insulin than I normally give. So I gave him a tiny bit less to compensate. I think I'll be doing the flicking every time. It was hard to do this before as the bubble would stick to the plunger and just form a ton of tiny bubbles. There seems to be a learning curve with everything.

I am loving the pictures you guys post in the threads. They make me laugh.

Looking over his ss - it is looking like his nadir seems to be between +5 and +6.

So is it safe to not test until +5 tonight?

in most cats +2 should be about the same as the PS reading, so when it's lower that means they need more early testing. I would probably get a +3 to see if he is still dropping at a fast clip.

Maverick almost always drops at +2. I notice in the Lantus stickies - +1 and +2 are often increases. It isn't common with Maverick on the days I've gotten +2s. I wonder if thats because he doesn't eat a lot in the +1 +2? (today I gave him HC food before +1 as I was going to be away)
