Think we found the reason for Paisley's weird numbers. We had been watching a broken toenail and cut pad which is doing very well. Then, several hours ago, DH found an abscess behind Paisley's right ear and it's rather large. The scab looks like a scratch, not a puncture. I lanced it and got bloody pus then blood. Cleaned it out with betadine and let it drain. It's now closed back up but when DH gets home I'll have him hold her so I can reopen it and see what comes out. If absolutely necessary I can put an E-collar on her.
I have 100mg tablets of doxycyline that the vet we use for our poultry gave me to treat bumblefoot. I had them write the expiration date of the tablets on the prescription bottle so I know they are still safe to use. After researching on FDMB and through Google searches, I've decided to start her on the doxy. The dosing instructions I found from vet sites, universities and vet pharmacies say 2mg/lb. She weighs just under 11.5#. I'll cut the tablets into quarters and give it before her food to be sure it makes it all the way down.
Getting vet care during off hours can be difficult. Normally she'd be going to the vet. I've spent several hours researching this and came up with the conclusion that the vet would be do the same thing. The antibiotic might be different as they have their favorites. Doxy is broad spectrum. I'll be keeping a very close eye on her and if she gets worse or doesn't significantly improve within 48 hours, she'll get to a vet.
