I'm sure today's low number is because she didn't eat well yesterday and because she missed her PM+8 meal

Yesterday's numbers:
AMPS 183; +2 204; +3 191; +9 220; +10 258 +11 203
PMPS 205; +2 216; +4 195

hope she was just taking a rest day, Thelma!
I love the fact that Calistica has many caring beans :-D
Thanks Celi!
I am worried about Calistica, something isn't right if she's not eating well. She missed pretty much all her meals yesterday but thankfully my aunts kept offering room service and when I got home I offered her food again and she ate. At dinner more of the same but ate some. She ate all of her PM+4 and +6 meals and skipped her PM+8. When I got up at 4:45 today I heard that she was lapping her food and I took it away. That is how I knew she'd skipped her +8 meal.
She goes in for labs today so I hope everything is OK. I wonder if she has another pancreatitis flare up? she just had her first one in early-mid October. Is it possible that she may have another one? When she gets home from the vet I'll give her some buprenex. I don't want to give it to her before her labs.
I'm also wondering if this is part of her diabetic neuropathy. Today we were going to test her for cobalamin deficiency but I told the vet not to do it because I was not going to fast her. As a result I didn't buy the methylcobalim tablets. I ordered them last night.
Please send my baby some healing energy.
Thank you all and have a great day!
Thelma

Re: 11/04 Calistica's AMPS 115

I hope Calistica's appetite is back today and the vet visit goes well. Sending feel good vibes to sweet Calistica.

Re: 11/04 Calistica's AMPS 115; +1 206

I hope Calistica is feeling better, and all goes well at the vet today. Please keep us posted!

Hope all goes well with the vet. That is so sweet that your aunts keep an eye on her during the day. Hope her appetite picks up. That worries us, doesn't it?

Re: 11/04 Calistica's AMPS 115; +1 206; +2 186

Thanks everyone for all those good wishes for Calistica. My aunts know how much Calistica means to us. Today she had an appointment at Tufts with just the lab tech. I got her PCV and Total Solids results and I'm not happy: 21 and 6.6.
She's been a little anemic since we had her on chemo but this year her HCT has been going down. It could be too that her kidney disease is progressing.

Her appetite seems to be better. She ate her AMPS meal even if I had to keep putting the dish in front of her. She ate at about 9:30 when she got home from the vet and that meal she ate with gusto.

Hi guys .. I am glad to hear calistica is eating better for you this morning .. I don't know much about pancreatitis or anemic cats but hopefully others will be here with knowledge on those soon .. hope you guys have a great weekend!

Hi Thelma & Calistica,
We are continuing to send positive thoughts that Calistica's health issues will all improve. She is getting such good care, and she deserves it. She is a beautiful gal! Good luck with the tests.

sending Calistica healing vines and lots of prayers.....i know what you mean...you know her better than anyone so you'd know if something is not right....hope it's nothing serious....

Re: 11/04 Calistica's AMPS 115; +1 206; +2 186

Thanks everyone for all those healing thoughts. Calistica's kidney values were high. Her creatitine was 3.5 and it's never been that high before. the vet said her BUN was slightly higher than last time which was 37. That is all I know. I won't be able to get copies of her labs till Monday.
She just had her first UTI in mid-October. She is still taking Clamavox for it. I didn't think the anemia was the reason for the lack of appetite. The kidneys make more sense.
The vet wants to see her next Wed and potentially do an ultrasound. This means that I'm going to have to fast her so no insulin that morning. I am worried about not giving her insulin. Our appointment is at 11AM. Labs will be repeated then. Our orders are to take her to the ER if she declines over the weekend.
Room service is the only reason why she's eating today. So far she's skipped two meals: Her 1:30AM and her 11AM. So not too bad.

Re: 11/04 Calistica's PMPS 242

PMPS - Calistista is starving and ate all of her dinner PLUS seconds!
Today was her Adequan day but I also gave her a B12 shot.

Re: 11/04 Calistica's PMPS 242

This is my first post in your condo. I have no computer so I will keep it brief tonight. My GA Bear Man had many of the same issues as your cat (IBD, CRF, pancreatitis, and anemia, etc). Tanya's CRF website has a must-read section on anemia. Testing reticulocytes can help determine if the anemia is non regenerative (due to kidney disease). A gradual decline in HCT could be consistent with this. I treated Bear Man for his non regenerative anemia with shots of Aranesp (Darbepoietin) and he responded well. We started when his HCT dropped to .18.

It is important to determine if the anemia is regenerative (e.g. due to a GI bleed or due to chronic disease) or non regenerative. Note that ongoing UTI may be driving the renal values up. I think an ultrasound us a good idea. You should also have your plan in place as to treating the anemia, as your PCV is getting low enough to where you want to think about taking action. I would read the anemia reference if you have not already done so.

Re: 11/04 Calistica's PMPS 242, +2 291 - fasting a diabetic

Hi Linda, thanks for stopping by. We did reticulocyte counts about a year ago when the chemo induced anemia was getting her HCT into the lower 20's. Back then it was borderline non regen. We also talked about Arenesp. I'm sure we'll be talking about that next Wednesday when we see the vet.
She had never had a UTI till last month. I think that is still acting up. We did an ultrasound on 10/13 and back then it was more about her pancreas. They checked for kidney stones too but it was her pancreas that looked angry. On Wednesday the vet will look at her kidneys again.

:?: Are there any rules for fasting a diabetic cat? If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it. I am concerned about not giving Calistica her insulin next Wednesday. I hate having to fast her.

Celi, thanks for sending healing vines Calistica's way. It is 8:42PM and at 9:30 she gets she pre-bed time meal. She is already hungry and is begging for food. That didn't happen yesterday. We can't feed her now because she had her Denamarin 1 hour ago.

Re: 11/04 Calistica's PMPS 242, +2 291

Sending the lovely Calistica lots of healing vines.

Why are you fasting her....for a blood test or for the U/S? If it's the latter, are you saying they want to give her anesthesia for the U/S? Unless she is extremely fractious, I would be super nervous about that. If the fasting is for a spec FPL
or other test, I would wait for some of the folks who have had to do that to jump in.

I sure hope all is ok with your girl. Did your vet talk to you about starting subq fluids? I'd think with a creat at 3.5, I'd want to start the squids.

Re: 11/04 Calistica's PMPS 242, +2 291

Hi Marje, we are fasting for the U/S. Not because she'll get anesthesia but food could block the view during the U/S
The vet didn't say anything about sub-Q's. She knows I have them as I just got them from her on 10/14. Because Calistica has heart disease I have to be very careful about giving her fluids w/o the vet's consent. We believe Calistica is feeling better. I do hope others reply about the fasting question because I am worried about it.

Re: 11/04 Calistica's PMPS 242, +2 291

The reticulocyte test will not give a reliable result until the anemia is moderate to severe. When the PCV drops below .20, the test will be more accurate, but at that point you should be looking at urgently treating the anemia. Please see Tanya's site for more on this.

A worsening of renal disease can cause a loss of appetite due to the level of uremic toxins in the blood.

Re: 11/04 Calistica's PMPS 242, +2 291

I'd forgotten about the test only being accurate when the PCV values drop below 20! Thanks for bringing that up Linda.
Since dinner her appetite has gone back to normal! That is a really good sign!
