Re: 10/8 Ginger AMPS 416

Good morning.....

Hope Ginger starts coming down for you. You are doing such a great job with your sweet baby.

I see you are feeding her the EVO dry....I too started Curry on that as well....and it seemed to take some time for her to transition to the canned food. My other cat won't eat it.....But when Curry finally transitioned....it was amazing what it did to her glucose.....And I read your SS on how you are introducting it when she is hungry.....Great idea......How is going for Ginger on the transition?

Hope you have a great day.

Re: 10/8 Ginger AMPS 416

Hi Tena,

All my cats love the EVO dry and have been on it since Feb of this year.
I have 3 cats. Only Ginger is diabetic.
The other 2 cats love canned food as well, and now I give them the canned first, but Ginger is a picky little girl.
She wont even eat treats or real chicken. lol

She is probably only eating 2 tsp of the wet right now. I add a little water to it and take her water bowl away until she eats a little.
If she wont eat it at all, I add more water, so its more soupy. Then she will at least drink the fluid out of it, and gets a little bit of the food inside her.
If she still wont eat it, i sprinkle crumbed EVO dry on top.
LOL, I am really trying.
Once she walks away and definety is done, I give her the EVO dry and the water bowl.

Right now, she is feeling just awful and is not eating much of even the dry, so hopefully when her BG levels out, and feels better, she will eat more.

Morning Lori...how is it going with the amoxociliin? Is it liquid? Have you heard of Fortiflora? http://www.amazon.com/FortiFlora-Feline ... B001650OE0 While taking the ABs, it is good to give the probiotic a few hours after the meds. It replenishes the friendly bacteria in the intestines which helps avoid diarrhea that sometimes comes with the ABs. The kitties usually like it sprinkled on top of the canned food. I hope it will entice Ginger to eat more of the canned) Some kitties will also taste a bit of plain yogurt with active cultures which is also s probiotic.(just saying that but mine never liked it...they would eat the Fortiflora though)

How long will she be on the ABs?

As long as she is getting some dry, I guess we can expect that her numbers will be higher than we would like to see. Anne/Muffin just had success with the canned...after a long battle with the dry. You might want to read a bit about it in her condo....

I hope Ginger will feel better and better as the day goes by....nice yellow last night, eh? Would love to see more of that Ginger!

Here is the meter question you asked in another thread: (one condo per day per kitty...all question can be asked in your own condo Lori...and you will have all your answers in one place...make sense?)

ReliOn Confirm Meter questions

Postby Gingers Mommy » Fri Oct 08, 2010 7:39 am
Does anyone here use the ReliOn Confirm Meter?

How do you like it?
Is it accurate?
Are there any pros or cons about this meter and lancing device?

I use the Accu-check compact plus meter now.
The tests strips are in a drum and its very easy to use, but supplies are pretty expensive.
I am looking for a less expensive option.

Re: 10/8 Ginger AMPS 416

Lori, glad to hear that Gingers numbers went down last night...even if it was subQ fluid induced, that's good! Good luck with the dosecrease! Hopefully that and the AB will start helping her numbers soon.

I use the Confirm, I love it! It is quite accurate, the test strips are inexpensive. It uses a tiny blood sample (0.3) too. One of my favorite things about it is that you can put the strip in the meter, and then poke and even if it takes a minute to get the ear to bleed, it doesn't shut off. Very user friendly. I have nothing to compare the lancing device with, it works fine for me. It has a clear cap which is what I use...easier to see where you're poking.

I picked the confirm over the micro because I thought it looked easier to hold in your hand. The micro is so skinny, I thought it would be easy to drop if the cat gave me a hard time, etc. I don't know it that's true, the micro uses the same strips and many here use it so it is also a good option.

ETA the reply about the meter.

Re: 10/8 Ginger AMPS 416

Hang tight with the new dose. Sometimes, a new dose can bump numbers up before they come down -- new dose wonkiness (NDW). Your vet's advice to watch Ginger's numbers was also good. If there is an infection, once the ABs kick in, numbers can drop quickly.

Please let us know what the rest of the lab work has to say.

Re: 10/8 Ginger AMPS 416

Good Morning Lori, ~O)

I am a newbie too, like you so take this with a grain of salt. I use the ReliOn Ultima. I initially used the Contour sent to me in the Newbie Kit. I changed to the ReliOn because of $. All around less expensive. Plus I noticed in the board that several folks use them. I did several readings on both to compare before I changed over and there was only a 9 point difference, the ReliOn being high. It's in my earliest condos.

Having said that, I prefer the ReliOn because its been easier for me to navigate its technology. I couldn't figure Contour out but I didn't have a manual for it either. That might be the only reason. Even so, I am very happy with my ReliOn. The only thing about it is if the number is in the 300's it always questions at top "Ketones?" and that startled me at first till I realized it was just asking. Ha! For what its worth.

Cee & Gandolf

PS: I do free-hand poking. Lancet too techy & bulky for me. I am a "technologically" challenged bean!

Re: 10/8 Ginger AMPS 416, +3 427

I recieved a call from my vet with the blood work results.

Platelets: ok

Kidney: slightly elevated at 40 Normal Range: (18-36)

Liver sightly elevated - nothing to worry about, same as in February.

Some imature red blood cells - possible enemia.

Suggested a Re-test of the above 3 in 4 weeks once her BG is under control and she is eating normally.
