Thanks to everyone who stopped by yesterday to share Billie's good day! Today has been a good day for her too, but it turned into a cat litter saga for me. She had two mini coughing spells this morning on two separate occasions...and both happened while she was in the litter box. I had been using Dr. Elsey's which is fragrance free and hypoallergenic, but it is clay litter, and the dust in clay litter can bother sensitive kitty lungs.

I did some research and found that Yesterday's News is probably the absolute best option for kitties with asthma/allergies. But, it only comes in pellet form. The girls wanted nothing to do with it. Brooklyn threw a tantrum, circling the litter box meowing at me. Billie tentatively climbed in to investigate, but immediately jumped out and sprinted into the other room like she had seen a ghost in there. I know that the proper thing to do is mix the new litter in with the old litter gradually to transition it, but I didn't want to use the old litter if it made Billie cough. So, I thought maybe they'd instantly love this strange new pellet litter and everything would be fine. :roll:

My next thought was to get a similarly textured but clay free clumping litter to mix in, and maybe they'd be okay with that. I went out again and got some World's Best Cat Litter, then mixed that in. It's all corn and can attract mold, so I was hesitant. Turns out, it also attracts cats. Brooklyn started eating it. ohmygod_smile Back to the pet store. On my third trip, I got two kinds of Dr. Elsey's - the crystal kind which I hope will be less likely to cause a problem because it's unscented and not clay based, and the regular kind that we have been using. There is currently a cocktail of Yesterday's News, Dr. Elsey's crystals, and the regular Dr. Elsey's in the litter box. They have accepted this. I hope I can transition completely to Yesterday's News at some point.

Billie was just chasing a bug around very enthusiastically. I think it got away, but she made a good effort.

Goodness, your narration of the litter experiments has me spitting soda at the keyboard. EATING World's Best Litter!!!! :lol: :lol: Brooklyn isn't part DOG is she?

Good luck on the transition. Makes me almost glad that one of my crew will only use pee pads.

Get those buggers Billie. Or , maybe not.

Pee pads...pee pads sound really nice right about now!!

Brooklyn probably assumed the corn litter was her old dry food! The garbage Science Diet the girls used to eat before I knew better was full of corn. :roll:

We tried a corn-based litter once. None of us, cats or beans, could stand the smell, so that was a very short-lived experiment.

I had to use the Yesterday's News once when one of my kitties had a cut on his paw and the vet didn't want him getting the clay litter in it. He didn't much care for it, but he used it. Once he was healed and out of isolation, I kept the YN in that litter box and NONE of the cats used it.

I was using the crystal form of Dr. Elsey's hypoallergenic litter for a while, but none of the cats would go poo in that box - only pee. I also tried the walnut shell stuff - I can't remember the brand name. They didn't mind that, and I thought the dust was less, but there was still some, and when they track it around, you have little brown specks instead of little gray specks. Plus, it's hard to see what they've done because everything is dark brown! So we're back to Dr. Elsey's regular hypoallergenic clay litter. It's the lesser of many evils for us!

I'm glad Billie's had a couple of good days in a row. Two mini coughing spells are better than two big ones, or more! Minka's coughing has been less frequent since I increased her Pred to every other day, but she had two nasty coughing spells this afternoon, about an hour apart. Both took place on the living room sofa. It was my fault - I had just been talking to my DH earlier about how she hadn't been coughing lately! :roll:

Silly girl, Brooklyn! Corn litter isn't for everyone...in our house, though, it helped so much. DH ss allergic to clay, as is our civvie, Frankie, who would hop in the box, immediately hop out and barf. World's Best restored peace for both of them! I'm sorry it didn't work for your girls, but hopefully the transition to News will help Billie a lot.

I could never use corn. I already have a problem with moths and silverfish. Can't get rid of them no matter what I do. I think perhaps they like the cat trees but I paid so much for them I can't part with them. I thought about switching litter yesterday when my vet said Max has bronchitis but I hate to upset him. He doesn't do well with change. I hope your new mix helps Billie and that they all use it!! :YMHUG:
